Ideas about Handling Eligibility

Some random thoughts:

- Everybody that had a normal redshirt available can use it for this current (past??) year of 2019-2020 regardless if they competed or not- Hall, Brooks, N. Lee, Kerk, Seth, RBY, etc..
• This is easiest group to solve.
• They will be full fledged point scorers for their team and be able to wrestle attached until eligibility runs out.
• Brooks can be a five time Big Ten champ!!

- Senior qualifiers from this year will get automatic qualification for next year at whichever weight they need.
• 33 is a random number anyways... expand brackets to include normal allocation plus whatever seniors from this year.
• These kids won’t be point scorers for their university and don’t have to be even enrolled.
• They can work out and by coached by current team, but not be full fledged members.

- Non seniors that have already used their redshirt will get an extra year of TOURNAMENT eligibility.
• This last group is hardest to solve. These are the wrestlers like Spencer Lee that have used redshirt but ultimately get screwed out of a year.
• Same stipulations as above after their normal eligibility runs out- not full fledged member of team and non point scorers.
• They will qualify their super senior year through established criteria like qualifying at open tournaments (imagine the intrigue of making scuffle or CK or Mat Town a qualifying tournament!).
• NCAA bracket will need to be extended for the next four years.

How I would do it:

1. Qualifiers for Nationals get the lost year restored for the 2020-21 season. Optional for the wrestler to take it or leave it. If taking it, it must be applied to the 2020-21 season.

2. Teams have to declare by some date in the summer which of their wrestlers intend to take the extra year option. At that time, for each of those "opt in" wrestlers who were otherwise out of eligibility, teams must declare which rostered athletes are "affected". Only a 1:1 ratio allowed (e.g., team can't claim 2 or more wrestlers affected by a single guy getting an extra year). So, PSU might declare J. Lee, Starocci, and Beard as "affected" by Joseph, Hall, and Rasheed returning, but cannot declare more than one guy for any single "opt in" guy, and cannot declare any affected wrestlers for opt-in guys like RBY, Lee, or Brooks (because they were not out of eligibility).

3. Initially, the so-called "affected wrestlers" have an extra year tentatively granted for their careers; that extra year remains intact as long as they do not compete attached in the 2020-21 season. If they ever compete attached in the 2020-21 season, the corresponding "opt-in" wrestler is thus barred from further competition, and the extra year that was tentatively given the "affected wrestler" is forfeited.

The team and its waiting-in-the-wings wrestlers may still have a gripe with the above in terms of how things are treated with respect to underclassmen qualifiers, but nothing is perfect, and a solution should be simple and easy to understand (IMO).

I kind of like this, but I think the returning seniors should have to be enrolled in school.

Spencer Lee has not used his red shirt, btw

Perhaps Lee could relinquish all wins this season and retroactively use his redshirt. He would then have two years of eligibility left. Just kidding....

Hate to be a negative, but I dont think there is any chance they do it for the winter sports. Maybe the spring sports since they are minor players and they missed the entire season. But winter sports are bigger and more complicated and they had there entire regular season. It sucks big time but thats life. Very sorry for the kids involved:oops:

I know this is not the popular opinion but I think too bad, so sad. We need to move on. I think the snowball affect of any change Is too great. It sucks but it Is nobodies fault. Give seniors eligibility = hose the guy waiting behind him... give extra scholies = hose the teams that had a plan for next year etc, etc, etc. There is no way to turn back the clock when there are thousands of variables. We keep saying "Cael has a plan" (well so does every other coach) but now we think the NCAA should change the plan. I think It sucks for the athletes but it happened and sometimes we have to play the cards we are dealt. JUST MY OPINION...
