The game is still alive and vibrating!

The Chicago Tribune on Sun 2/5 had a great article:
The Buzz Never Faded.

If someone could LINK for the Board, Thank You!

My best friend had a game board in the early 60's. His family had the cash to buy him a painted set of (I believe) Giants while I had to play with the generic yellow colored guys. We played up until 5th grade when we both lost interest. We must have lost 500 of the felt footballs. His dad owned a hvac/refrigeration service or whatever it was called back then and used to fabricate spare footballs out of his inventory.

I had a set that I started painting for the various teams (mostly Oakland vs KC, as I was a Raiders fan in my youth).... Long gone, though I wonder if any of the players are still in boxes I brought from my folks (which I haven't looked at in decades).

What I'd really like to find is a reasonable table hockey (with the rod--not air hockey) game. Had a lot of fun with that as a teen.

There was nothing worse than your RB breaking free and streaking down the sideline for a TD only to begin to turn around for no known reason at the 5 and then run ALL THE WAY BACK to your end zone for a safety while every other player was stuck in a pile somewhere on the field.

God I loved that game. Would play it for hours with my friends. I had the raiders and the eagles as players.

I had steelers/cowboys. it took like 15 minutes to set up the players and then they'd run in circles...very frustrating. We'd play for a couple of hours and put it away for a long time until we forgot how frustrating it was. Hockey was a much better table top game.

We played marble football. Only millionaires, or guys whose dads wore white shirts to work, had the electric football boards. I still have my marbles (less so my brain). Marbles were designated positions by their size, the bigger ones OL etc. (Gunsie wasn't around to consult -- don't know how we managed). The smaller flashier ones were the split ends and RBs. Yes, there was a fullback, usually a bit stouter than the RBs. It would've been very difficult to run a hurry-up offense, having to gather the marbles and position them, though every play was run without a huddle:). It was a lot of fun.

It took so little to amuse us when we were young. Electric football was frustrating.

Like Pong. We'd play that for hours. Kids today wouldn't last 10 minutes playing that before being bored.

I remember having Talking Football, Monday Night Football and Hall of Fame football (I think that was it's name) where you picked a diagrammed play, the defense put their formation on top of it and then you slid a board and a light bulb from underneath revealed the outcome of the play.

Loved the electric football and played it against my brother for hours. Passing was a real challenge; a good running attack was the way to go if you could get guys to go forward.
As I recall, there was an electric baseball game from the same manufacturer. I drafted one of the baseball guys for my team, and had some success with him running in a straight line.

I agree with that, the hockey game you show above was awesome. Played it to the point that it broke. Never could get into the electric vibrating football game. Seemed to lack any real skill, just luck of where the players ended up vibrating to.

Electric football - just like B1G because holding was so obvious and never called, and talk about using a fullback!!

I also played with my older brother for hours and never completed a pass. We had the Cowboys and Eagles. He always won because he cheated !

Didn't the base runners run in a grove in the baseball version?

I had that football game you described at the end... still remember that Draw Play vs Blitz was a TD!

Isn't that the truth, a break away like Barkley only to score 2 for the opponent.

A friend of mind received a set for his birthday and we played many games. I remember trying to bend the tabs on the bottom of a player to try to get it to move in a direction to little avail. Many hours of simple fun. The memories, thanks for posting.

Always wanted the game as a kid, we could never afford it. Later on, bought it for my own kids, they were never interested, too busy with something new called video games.

Today my wife yells at political panels on TV. In the fifties I yelled at little metal football players vibrating randomly around. How can I call her crazy?

Laughed like hell when I read that.

Talking football. "It's a leaping interception...he's going to go all the way...touchdown!"

Where I grew up the word "sacked" referred to someone getting punched in the nuts so we always got a good laugh at the one that went "Quarterback back to pass...he's sacked...10 yard loss."

loved the football game the plays and the lightbulb. We had a league and a schedule and kept records. I believe mine is still in the basement..Great game until there we stains or cuts on the plays so you. recognize the play. A foreunner to Spygate.

The game we had before Electrinic FB was Johnny Unitas Football.

A two player game driven entirely by card draws and die rolls, with the offensive player responsible for both drawing cards and rolling the dice. No charts are used; the ball advances either on an odd die roll or the play result comes from the card deck on an even roll. The first player to score 25 or more points (as per NFL scoring rules) wins the game.

No strategy, no skill. FUN!

The 3M company came up with " Thinking Man's Football ", which was actually quite well designed. Offensive plays were chosen as well as defensive alignments and shifts. Outcomes were decided by dice rolls with variables modifying the results of the rolls. I still have it somewhere ...

My game was APBA baseball. Was a well-designed dice game using team and player cards based on actual stats from the prior year.

Probably similar to Strat-O-Matic.

Anyone remember Foto-Electric football with offensive and defensive cards that you'd slide in, pull the light blocker out and watch the play unfold. My brother and I played this for many hours.
Loved that game, was passed down to my brothers from uncles. We played it for hours as well!

Loved APBA football and baseball. Perfect blend of strategy/skill, luck, and easy to play. Also have you the ability to name every player on every team in the league which always impressed people.

My brother and I played a baseball game similar to APBA. I forget what it was called. We also killed it on Mattel "Intellivision" baseball, football, and basketball. There was a knack to all those games.
