If you were coaching this year what changes would you make?

Lets skip all the fire Donavan and other topic killers and get to the meat of it all.

If I was coaching, I would bench Hackenberg and give McSorley and Stevens a chance. QB's who can move out of the pocket and throw on the run to account for our lack of depth at O-Line.

Now you have Barkley sitting back there as a homerun hitter. You can definitely use play action more with him, but you also have a QB who can move if the play breaks down

I really like Hackenberg, but he is playing like he needs an all star O-Line in front of him and that just is not going to happen during his tenure at Penn State.

At Receiver throw deep more often. Let your guys go one on one and make a play. This isn't pro football. You don't have all star corners playing against your wide receiver every game. Let them make a play more often. Jerry Rice wasn't the fastest receiver to ever play. But he made plays when you threw him the ball.

Defense I don't change much. Maybe keep a safety a little closer to support the run since our Linebackers struggled a little bit against a good running teams.

I would direct Donovan to devise a more pro-style game plan that works to the skills of the players we have.

Even with our O-line troubles? You have to be able to protect the QB better in pro style offenses. I would think the run and shoot would be more effective.

Special teams and turnovers.
I see so, something you want to share with the rest of us on how we can change special teams? Is there a player on the bench that isnt playing? How would you get more turnovers?

Still waiting to hear how you would do this to beat Temple and tOSU.

I would never bench Hack except for blowouts or injuries. We all know he is not performing as well as we expect ?
He helped save PSU football ! Who cares we are right where we all
Thought. Let's go with it this year.
However , I cannot believe our punters ?
They are psyched out , come on man get some balls ?

With Barkley we've seen that this team can succeed in a pro style offense. In fact it has been pro-style plays like play action that we've been the most productive so far this year.

I just spoke about this in another thread.

I dont think Franklin can bench him without some serious fall out from the fans. But yet everyone wants to crucify him and Donovan for the play calling.

But if I am the coach I bench him. he is no different than any other player, and in the NFL make no mistake he will be benched if he performs like he has at Penn State this year.

I get what you are saying but when you end up in 3rd and long you have to be able to throw in that offensive scheme and look what happened when Hackenbergs number was called to do just that. He was sacked. A mobile QB gets out of the pocket if he needs to Hackenberg does not want to run and our O-line does him no favors.

You need a better way to control the blitz. Right now I don't see one other than perhaps checking to a quick out. So from day 1 we would have worked on blitz control Instead of wildcat we would have worked 1-1 at each position

That's because they DID'T run play action. Rather they called slow developing straight drop back pass plays that didn't slow the rush down one iota. Our OL cannot sustain protection long enough for that. Now that we have a decent run game to help our passing game the play calling now needs to employ plays that take advantage of that.

Franklin claims they did just that. And when they couldnt run the ball it made very little difference. But now they can run the ball and it is your QB's responsibility to get rid of the ball and Hack is holding it far to long. Thats been part of the problem. The O-line is not playing well but they are playing better than last year, but Hackenberg has not stepped up and tried to make plays. he holds on to the ball instead of getting out of the pocket.

I agree with what you are saying, I question whether we have the QB to execute it like you want.

I'd start Laurent at center, move Mangiro to guard and bench either Gaia or Mahon (maybe both depending on Dowrey).

I would play music from the '70s during practice. And recruiting would lag.

I would orchestrate a cover-up for a former coach so that I can enable him to abuse children. I would cover it up by telling people about it. And it would all be to protect the football program.

;)

1) With Hack I'd run a fast hurry-up O.

2) I'd certainly have McSorley and a set of plays ready for maybe the 3rd or 4th series.

3) On D I'd run a 5-2.....the game is won and lost at the LOS. We have more strength on the defensive line and this will help our line backing. A 5-2 controls the corners, prevents double teams on our def linemen, enhances our pass rush and screws up offenses that aren't familiar with this defense.

I'd go NASCAR because there is no doubt Hack is better in the fast tempo. We have enough Wr's to stay fresh. I'd find a punter on the soccer team. Finally I'd put the headsets on and call the offensive plays.....

Oh that was brilliant. Yes very brilliant dude. so so funny I cant contain myself. Now let the big boys talk and go play with your crayons and coloring book.

If I was coaching I would "make" the OL more TALENTED. Since we all know that is easy to fix. With better coaching they would all be a REAL Big 10 OL, really ???
So I would first FIRE me and then "start all over when these DAMN sanctions are lifted".

Then I would give the NEW coaching staff "3-4" years to bring in "their" own players (Barkley, Polk, and Reid come to mind).
BUT, first get rid of Hack and play Stevens and/or Mc Sorley (they are younger and can get killed). Who would miss them ????

Does ANYONE actually watch these games? Take a minute or two to LOOK at the blocking for "pass" protection (protection? who the hell am I kidding).

I give all the credit in the world to this staff, they have never thrown these kid under the bus. As fans (which means we really know nothing) get to do that !!!
And the Media ?? Kind of a mixed bag, don't you think ?

I recall many fans pounding DiNardo before the season started since he said he saw NO improvement in our OL in practice. So he wondered where all the optimism was coming from? 10-2 ??

Next question ????

Interesting take here. Agree with bringing in Laurent. It sucks we are so limited at O-line that it is hard to make these calls. Mahon got beat badly and Gaia did as well. I just wish we had other options but we dont, and going forward we are going to need them next year.

He can claim they do but telling the qb to get rid of it quicker is not a plan. He needs to run a pro style but they don't I don't care what they say.

Brutally honest but I love it. So much truth in your post I cannot begin to praise it enough!

He can claim they do but telling the qb to get rid of it quicker is not a plan. He needs to run a pro style but they don't I don't care what they say.
I still think if you focused on Hackenberg more than the play calling you would see some of the plays called were right there and he didnt execute them.

Fair enough.

On a serious note, I agree with the other people who say no-huddle if you gotta run with Hack. I would also get tryouts for a punter--even if I need to pull a walk on from the rugby team. And more tight end passes if you can find one to hold on to the ball. Those are starters. Oh, and no keeping my injured qb in late for a lost cause game. And I would fire Donovan.

Thats more like it. Kyle Carter didnt dress or make the trip anyone have an update on him?

Gieski has stone hands. I wouldn't even send him out for passes anymore. Waste of a down.

No huddle I like your thinking on that one. We did some of that last year and they got away from it this year.

I cannot believe we cant find a single kid at PSU that cant kick a ball over 30 yards.

I like your D scheme. Thats a solid reason to run it and considering we have young line backers, it would certainly help that unit.

Agree on the hurry up, and bringing in McSorely to stick his toes in the water is where I am at. Lets get him in more often and see what he has,

I remember Hack doing really well with the nascar offense his first year. He needs a rhythm and he throws much better then. I seem to remember him hitting 9 straight passes or so a few times, seems hard to believe now
