If you were coaching this year what changes would you make?

I dont recall seeing you around this joint before. Are you new around here? I kinda like your naïveté.
I'm pretty sure the poster has been here before. He has been on a time out of his own for a while. It will come to you. He's taken with the color blue (note the eyes), but has chosen not to use it for his font this time. He's also significantly reduced the size of his font. He isn't "Joking" around any more. He doesn't like the Beatles either.

Lets skip all the fire Donavan and other topic killers and get to the meat of it all.

If I was coaching, I would bench Hackenberg and give McSorley and Stevens a chance. QB's who can move out of the pocket and throw on the run to account for our lack of depth at O-Line.

Now you have Barkley sitting back there as a homerun hitter. You can definitely use play action more with him, but you also have a QB who can move if the play breaks down

I really like Hackenberg, but he is playing like he needs an all star O-Line in front of him and that just is not going to happen during his tenure at Penn State.

At Receiver throw deep more often. Let your guys go one on one and make a play. This isn't pro football. You don't have all star corners playing against your wide receiver every game. Let them make a play more often. Jerry Rice wasn't the fastest receiver to ever play. But he made plays when you threw him the ball.

Defense I don't change much. Maybe keep a safety a little closer to support the run since our Linebackers struggled a little bit against a good running teams.
Hard to throw deep if you can't pass block, which we could not do well vs OSU. I do agree with more play action passes especially if they are thrown in running situations. That should help with the pass blocking and freeze the linebackers.

Brutally honest but I love it. So much truth in your post I cannot begin to praise it enough!

That was a 7 foot joke. It went totally over your head.

This thread is beyond pathetic. If any one of us were qualified to make these decisions guess what job we would have, we don't have that job so guess what our decisions on such matters are worth... nothing.

80% of the issues with this team are due to the Offensive Line. If you don't see it or understand why then there is nothing that can be said or shown to help you. 5% are dropped balls. 5% are due to Hack missing throws. The other 10% is bad play calling. On defense it is the LBs not having the game time experience and size. We are solid across the DL and secondary, and may have some defensive depth issues.

ALL of the experts have been saying this year would be the low point after the sanctions were lifted. Every thing from this year forward would have upside. Look at the OL recruits from last year and this year. We are going to be better next year (hell Menet may even start at guard due to how poor our guards are playing right now), Palmer is going to be much improved - he looked a heck of a lot better on Saturday than he did against Temple, and quite honestly may have been the only bright spot across the entire OL on Saturday. Laurent brings a bit more aggressiveness, but I don't think he is an all Big Ten Center.

My guess for next year's OL

LT - Palmer
LG - Nelson
C - Laurent
RG - Menet
RT - Beh

as for the changes I would make now - NONE. No sense burning redshirts now, as I doubt anyone redshirting would have that much of a difference in how the season plays out. You could move some people around on the OL, but to what end? No one we face between now and the end of the season has the defensive line that OSU has... no one.

So you'd bench Hack whose strength is throwing the ball down the field (but has struggled at this because no one is open and he doesn't have time to let plays develop) and your new strategy is to throw downfield more often. Brilliant.

If I was coaching I would "make" the OL more TALENTED. Since we all know that is easy to fix. With better coaching they would all be a REAL Big 10 OL, really ???
So I would first FIRE me and then "start all over when these DAMN sanctions are lifted".

Then I would give the NEW coaching staff "3-4" years to bring in "their" own players (Barkley, Polk, and Reid come to mind).
BUT, first get rid of Hack and play Stevens and/or Mc Sorley (they are younger and can get killed). Who would miss them ????

Does ANYONE actually watch these games? Take a minute or two to LOOK at the blocking for "pass" protection (protection? who the hell am I kidding).

I give all the credit in the world to this staff, they have never thrown these kid under the bus. As fans (which means we really know nothing) get to do that !!!
And the Media ?? Kind of a mixed bag, don't you think ?

I recall many fans pounding DiNardo before the season started since he said he saw NO improvement in our OL in practice. So he wondered where all the optimism was coming from? 10-2 ??

Next question ????

Over all, I agree with your post. I guess I wish I could see some evidence that quality coaching was going on, The we are young, and we don't have the talent on the offensive line excuse will not be there forever.

Best post in weeks. Just watch the individual Oline matchups every play. It's ugly and it can't be fixed right now. Yes, we had some success running the ball but that was largely zone blocking with Barkley making more out of those plays than he deserved to get. Plus we benefited on several uncalled holding penalties vs. Ohio State. When these guys have to man up in pass protection, make adjustments on Dline stunts, pick up blitzers, etc. they can't get it done on a consistent basis. Take what you can get, try to improve week by week but every game is going to be a struggle.

I would get rid of all the arm chair Chicken Little coaches here.

In this order:

(1) stop playing pop music on the loudspeakers constantly. Drop the mic right over the band and only play loudspeaker music during official replays, or better yet, play older films and JoePa homages and CJF/Spencer pep talks

(2) Assign an entire office to find a punter - Field position continues to be the cancer that spreads to everything else. You cannot play 40 minutes of the game on your side of the field. Until that changes, everything else is just a pipedream.

(3) run more no huddle when Barkley is in the game

(4) put more guys in motion than just Polk on jet plays (with OB and JayPa it was almost like watching a chinese fire drill)

(5) stand by Hackenberg – is his back injured? (I think Herbie was eluding to this “something wrong with his mechanics” but couldn’t pinpoint it, and I think the Nittwits mentioned it)

(6) send out films of several games (Temple, OSU, BC, Rutgers) to OCs who would be viable candidates for 2016 (e.g. Jason Candle at Toledo) to get feelers on other possible candidates

(7) air the ball out more often on zero routes (not slow developing patterns)

What should we do with the two kickers we have on commitment for 2016? I know Nordin is said to be weighting his options, but we was supposed to be a FG/KO kicker and the other guy was supposed to be a damned good punter. Or should we ask Sandy to create a whole new office to find a punter now for the last 5 games of the season and then what are they going to do? Oh wait... don't answer that it appears our Athletic Department has the circle jerk down pat.

Currently Nordin is committed but is listed as a Kicker. Gillikin from GA is committed and listed as a Punter.

More like Hack can't escape his own two feet. Mobile QB that can move out of the pocket. Whoever is at QB doesn't need to throw the ball more than 35 or 40 yards.

Yeah I would say its brilliant or elementary thinking. Hey we got a kid who can't scramble. Lets just keep him in so he can get sacked 100 times this year. Or wait a minute, you mean we have another QB who CAN move out of the pocket and can avoid getting sacked.. Lets try that kid.

Light Bulb there Einstein.Sorry its a little to forward thinking for you there bubby!

Without those hints, I would have been in the dark. Many thanks for the en"light"enment.

Not worth celebrating. The return of "he who shall no longer be named?" That would be worth celebrating. I'm afraid he isn't coming back. Oh well.

Core reactive meltdown has commenced.

Last night I incorrectly described him (aka Get Real, Bushy) as "moody". I should have used the adjective "pouty".

He'll be back. Sometimes it takes a random act on the field or something even seemingly less important.

My bet is that this time it will be more Texans-related than PSU-related.

Probably shouldn't engage the poor guy.
Oh come on please do. I want to play along. This is going to be entertaining. I mean I realize a few people might not have all the marbles upstairs. But WOW this group of people is about as paranoid as it gets. Please dont sleep with firearms around. You may hurt someone.

Yeah. You can bet he'll come back with bullhorns on a giant black sedan and guns a blazin'.

I think I need to do some homework and figure out how much BS you are pulling right now with the reporter story.

Maybe its time I take a peek behind the curtain because this is either the largest collection of Gomer Pyles ever assembled or each of you needs to be evaluated by a Mental Health Professional.

What if I advised you that I am actually a Mental Health Professional Reporter?

Oh no. Now the other guy is really getting paranoid. He thinks you were describing him when you were describing a true board legend. Time to put him on virtual ignore. Nothing good can come of this.

If I told you what I do for a living I think you would probably hush up. Especially if you were honest about your profession.

I have the means and the contacts to quite easily figure out a few things. Your conduct is unprofessional even on this type of board. And quite honestly I think based on the attacks a few have placed on me that I start throwing a few punches here myself.

If you ever determine what I do for a profession, you should be sadly disappointed...for both of us. Isn't my board name sufficient disclosure?

Defensive coordinator gets a raise.
Offensive coordinator gets assigned to special teams coach.
QB coach gets assigned to equipment manager.
I start calling my own plays.
