In hindsight, maybe we should have gone with Verkleeren instead of BB at 149? Verk is a wily . . .

What has Verk shown that makes you think he'd have placed Top 8? I love Verk but he might have won the wrestle back 3-2 for us then lost to Thomas anyways. Bartlett got us a pin at least.

Well, then it was a big mistake not wrestling BB all year. He has no quality wins at the weight and was already ranked on the fringe of the coaches' rankings. He won't qualify for NCAAs. Why wrestle Verk for most of the regular season then?

Because he won the wrestle-offs and started every match until he got injured. Good Grief....Pay attention!

Come on. If you are going to follow one dumb assed post with another post, try not to let it be dumber.
Verk was 0-2. He was the starter in the first match, then wrestled as an extra in the second match. The team wrestled 6 duals and Verk started once. I suppose based on the quality of your two posts, maybe in your mind you believe you made a point and you believe he wrestled most of the duals.
OK. You are right. Can you stop now?

He didn’t even wrestle “most” of the season. BearClaw got time as well. This was a fluid weight in a weird year. BB looks every bit as advertised and managed to lose to the same guy that Verk did.

Moving away from that and straight to BB. I liked everything I saw except the ease with which his low legs were attacked in his matches. That will change. I’m impressed.

I’m impressed by all of them.

And Joe Lee looks like a winner in the first period of each match this year and then idk what happens. Nutrition? Anxiety? Regardless, I’m betting he will resolve it next year when he, and everyone else, has a normal training and match schedule.

Is Verk even healthy? Didn’t he get injured in an extra match?

veteran who likely would have found a way to make the top 8. Can BB still get an at-large bid to NCAAs?
Please. I appreciate BB stepping up for the team and giving it a good shot. Held his own and his day will come soon.
Great learning experience no matter how challenging for a future national champ.

OP might have made sense of this was a normal year and the redshirt for BB would have to have been pulled.... however it’s clear our staff was aware of the current rules of the free year ... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Agree entirely on BB. Lots to like. Lighting quick, clean finishes, etc.... also surprising how guys got to his lower legs but that will get corrected.

probably my favorite thing about BB is his energy and demeanor. Never looked tired. Always sprinted back to the center of the mat. Little things like that lead to success IMO.

Prediction - someone will start a why didn't Nick go at 149 thread.

I for one thought Beau did great. He came within a whisper of winning both matches, and he oozes talent. He took #4 to SV.

No way anyone other than Nick beats Rivera, and by the way I have been racking my brain to remember a better match. Without a doubt, that was one of the top 5 back and forth matches I have ever seen. Rivera has one smooth ankle pick that is for sure.

I am not happy I had to change my underwear after each period, but wow!!!!!

Why even go there?

Verk wrestled 1 varsity match this year.

The Verk train really is the little engine that could.

I’ll leave it at that so the sensitive posters don’t get triggered
Yep. I thought it was pretty obvious that PSU would have a difficult time scoring points at 149, might as well gone with the guy who could best benefit from the experience. Not Bartlett's fault his is wrestling up a weight class.

I don’t think anyone would have expected Bartlett to compete for a title at 141 this year.

The thought was that Lee could compete for one at 149, so the point differential for Lee at 149 vs 141 may not have been much. So basically any points Bartlett could have gotten at 141 would have been a bonus (since it’s now looking like Bartlett will get 0 at 149).

If Lee wins 141 with a bunch of bonus, it will be tough to question it in terms of what was best for the team (it does seem that part of the decision was what was best for Lee which they decided was 141), since you could argue he may not have had as much bonus at 149 even if he did win.

But if Lee doesn’t win NCAA’s I think it is fair to question this decision from a team standpoint (and yes I know Cael is arguably the greatest coach ever).

Just stop.

I think that if verk was the better option then Cael would have put him out there. I don't doubt Cael Sanderson or his ability to coach. If we all relax and step back and take a deep breath I'm 100 percent sure Cael will have them prepared for the national tournament. Trust the process. What I wouldn't pay to be in every practice from now til then lol Cael magic. That's all we need to know

Don't waste time posting, just call Cael directly.

No, Verk wouldn't. Besides, would Verk give us enough points to overtake Iowa in the BIG10 and NCAA? How many points did he give us the last couple of years? BB may or may not make the NCAA this year, but he's a long term vision and using this year to get some experience is a plus.
