In days of yesteryear some of these coaches never would have been fired with their records. Don't get me wrong I'm a capitalist and I believe someone should be paid the fair market value for there services but you have to take the good with the bad. When you are getting a multi million dollar contract 8-5 isn't good enough anymore.

Problem is when you fire them you still have to pay them - Nebraska paying 2 ex coaches now millions - the better question is how can schools afford to pay these catches salaries in the first place.

Pretty simple: when was the last time you heard of a university president or AD accountable for the real bottom line which is cash money? Being the snowflakes that they are, particularly the presidents, they just can't deal with irate alumni, so the easiest course is to fire.

How can they afford it? Tuition/fee increases, the bottomless well.

George Will wrote about college sports in his column this morning. He quoted the political philosopher Michael Oakeshott: "To try to do something which is inherently impossible is always a corrupting enterprise."

I guess this isn't exactly germane to the topic in this thread, but I think it's worth throwing out.

In the days of yesteryear 80% of the IA program's fans were not out demanding the HC's head on a pike over 7,8 or 9 win seasons also.

You can only have so many 10+ win teams every year, but everyone seems to think their team should always be one of those 10+ win teams.

IMHO the TV contracts are the root of all the evil. In fact, this article from January of this year does a pretty good job of pointing this out:

This article estimates north of $40 million to B1G member schools and points out the high HC salaries in the B1G. Too many of the schools evidently consider this "found money" and thus worthy of blowing on "flavor of the week" coaches that they think will be the next Saban, Meyers, Swinney, etc.that will bring their school to the promised land. Scott Frost seems to be this year's wunderkind that Nebraska and Florida (and UCF) appear to be in a bidding war over.
