Wrestling InterMat rankings update as Penn State Wrestling preps for Nebraska

MM still a just low AA at #6. Interesting.
That says more about the weight class than MM. KOT and Carr are 1-2 and will be until MM beats them. Hamiti is 3 and will be until MM beats him, although he should get a chance at B1Gs. The other two in front of him are Olejnik and Ramirez. MM should probably move ahead of Olejnik if he stays undefeated and Olejnik takes another loss or two (he's lost to KOT, Carr, and Hall in Big 12 duals). Ramirez has 2 losses and a win against Carr. I doubt MM will move ahead of him in the rankings (but possibly in NCAA seeding depending on how the criteria shake out).

Caliendo has an opportunity to shake up the rankings. He has Hamiti on Sunday and Olejnik the following week. If he were to win both I would suspect that would put Mitchell at 3 or 4.

I would guess 4 since Ramirez is still up there, but yeah, Caliendo can really help out MM's ranking. Not that I'm rooting for that though, LOL.

Yeah you never really know with rankings since they’re subjective but with Ramirez having a loss to Olejnik and a win over Carr if this scenario played out it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for MM to move all the way up to 2.

I've seen stranger things happen, but I highly doubt Ramirez or Carr will drop like that due to being handcuffed to someone who beat them and is now dropping. Especially Carr. I think everyone (rightfully) considers KOT and Carr the elite of the elite. Ramirez beat Carr but isn't ahead of him right now. Not that I think MM has no shot to beat them, but he won't be ranked ahead of either one until he does.

I think he handles Olejnik and Hamiti. I think he definitely beats Ramirez as well but I could see it being a bit tighter. Hamiti and Olejnik let it fly and that is where MM is best. I think him and Hamiti will be a really fun match to watch though

Freshman H Hidlay got the 1 seed being undefeated over J Nolf in 2018. I think the same thing could happen for Mitchell.

I wouldn’t expect Intermat or WIN to make a move like that but I would expect Flo to solely for the clicks and engagement it would generate. Personally I don’t put much stock in rankings they’re only someone’s opinions at the end of the day.

If by that you mean Psycho gets the 1 seed: zero chance if O'Toole remains unbeaten. And it's hardly a given even if O'Toole takes a loss.

Remember, that was the year of One-Legged Jason Nolf. He not only had a loss and missed over a month, but also MFF out of B10s upon qualifying for nationals.

Yes, forgot about MFFING out of B10's, just remembered the injury vs Rutgers.

There is a path for Mitchell to be #1 after bigs if he continues to run the table depending upon how Carr vs O'Toole shakes out.

I do think MM will run the table through conferences, more likely he gets the #2 or #3 if he does so.

Baby steps.

Dont KOT and Carr have a dual this year?
Twice before nationals. Feb 25th dual then conferences, one might argue odds are they split which forms at least and argument for MM #1 assuming he wins out through Bigs. If either loses two then Mitch could slide into #2, definitely #3. At least I think so:)

If MM happens to lose one before nationals, then he simply takes the path that Nolf and Bo took to get their first national title. None is perfect.

Except the great one.

Key is getting 2 or 3 and hopefully avoiding O’Toole or Carr until final. I’m generally hoping KoT runs table on Carr - pushing Carr to 4. If they split, things get kookier. MM against Ramirez semi would be ideal.

I say this knowing our Cornell friend will take umbrage

I think MM's matchup with Hamiti at B10's will tell us alot. Hamiti is pretty dangerous on top and being under the kid from the OSU exposed an area MM needs to work on.

I’m not worried about MM on bottom. Hepner is a top specialist. By far his best position and very good leg rider. Mesenbrink hasn’t had problems against anyone else. Hamiti is good on top but I don’t think he poses the same problems that Hepner does. I guess we will find out but I’m not too worried. Mesenbrinks top and bottom game have actually been pleasant surprises for me. We hadn’t really seen him in those positions for a long time coming into the season so I didn’t know what to expect. He is much much better on top than I was expecting

Don’t sleep on Hamiti. He’s good in all positions and has a wicked cradle. MM will need to keep his nose away from his knee.

Oh he’s very good. Him vs MM is one of the matches I’m most looking forward to. Their styles should create a really fun match but I definitely think MM wins it

I'm not too worried about MM's seed. Nobody wants him. Might be good to get one of these guys on a 2nd match of a day.

Just watched Olejnik against Caliendo. Mitch will run through that Swiss cheese defense

New Intermat rankings are out:

Davis 9
Nagao 11
Bartlett 1
Kasak 9
Haines 1
Mesenbrink 5
Starocci 1
Truax 6
Brooks 1
Kerkvliet 1

How crazy is 125 this year? If the NCAAs are seeded as the current Intermat ranks, the 14-19 first round match is Noto vs Figs.

The craziest thing at 125 is that Tanner Jordan from St Paris OH wrestles for South Dakota State.
