Iowa Hospitality

Two years ago in Oklahoma City, i found myself in a suite (by accident) for the first session. It ended up being an Iowa suite. I knew something was up as soon as I walked in, so I asked the guy who looked to be in charge. He showed me my mistake... The "S" after the section number stood for "Suite," which my ticket didn't have. I turned to leave and he says "we had a few guys cancel last second, stay and watch with us." I ended up watching all but one session in the suite, beer included!
I'm still waiting to meet the "awful Iowa fans" I hear about. Not saying they aren't out there, but I just haven't met any yet.
Oh, I met several last week in Iowa City. Just not going to let it taint experiences with dozens of wonderful fans over many years.

You're story was awesome, and more representative of my experiences.

Have you ever been to Iowa City to watch a collegiate meet or are you still being breast fed and mommy won't let you leave the yard? Well, I'm an Iowa fan and don't care what you think.

Good, because I do not care what you think. I speak from my experiences comparing all Big Ten schools I have visited. I lived in Chicago for ten years and went to about three road football and basketball games a season. I stand by my assessment in that Iowa fans were the worst.

If you fished on Silver and French you walked on our land...............

Hey I may ask you for a favor in June. I met a guy in Iowa City (Penn State fan) who is heading this way to do some trout fishing. I invited him to Trout Run and a few of the other streams. Maybe we can get together and show this guy a good time with some of your streams also. Thanks

trout run? in Clearfield county? I would think you need to head to Carlisle to fish the Letort (and another one nearby that I can't think of) - good limestone trout county - fly fishing only in a lot of stretches...

I've made plenty of Hawkeye friends over the years at nationals. Respect is a two way street.

Yes, we have all made frends with Hawkeye fans, but I believe it was Amalone (not sure) that shared this terrific story of bonding and spiritual connectivity through an almost tragic accident in his travel to Iowa:

An Iowa fan was heading south and Amalone was heading north on the same highway.
They came to a bridge and had a violent head on collision right in the middle of it. The cars were totally mangled, but to both of their surprise they each stepped out of their cars completely unscathed!

In total amazement the Iowa fan turned to the Amalone and said, "This is a miracle, I think this is a sign from God that we should put our differences aside and be friends".

Amalone said to the Iowa fan, "Alright, hold on" and ran to the back of his car and from what used to be his trunk pulled out a bottle of Jack Daniels. "Oh my God, this must be a miracle, this bottle of JD I had in my trunk didn't even break! This truly must be a sign to put aside our differences and be friends....let us drink!".

Amalone handed the bottle to his new friend, who in turn, twisted off the cap and takes a couple nice size chugs from the bottle then hands it back to Amalone "Here you go friend".

Amalone gently takes the bottle, screws the cap back on, and tosses it over the side of the bridge into the river below and says " No thanks, I think I'll wait for the police to arrive." @Azchief32 @amalone

Yellow Breeches
that's it, after HS graduation we went camping down there and fished both streams. THink we still had losing weight on our minds as we would often eat 1/2 gallon of ice cream in place of a meal! My friend moved there and opened up his chiropractic office!!

Living in Ohio and being an Iowa fan, I have had the chance to travel to Penn State and see a few football games when our teams have met. Went with friend the first time and had a terrible experience, when we left there we agreed that Penn State fans were the rudest fans we had ever been around. 2 years later my wife bought tickets to watch another game at PSU, I told her we shouldn't go because the fans were awful. We ended up going and I warned her the entire drive about what to expect and how terrible it would be, but this time was a totally different experience, she loved the city and the people. Everyone we met was friendly and interested in where we were from and were very welcoming.
On the flip side of this, I have been to CHA and Kinnick a number of times and seen opposing fans treated well and I have seen drunk fans give them a hard time. I was also at CHA a few weeks ago and saw many examples of our fans treating PSU fans well and I heard a few things shouted in the heat of the moment that were out of line and I was embarrassed by. Bottom line, you can't judge at entire fan base by a few fanatics or troll posters. Just MHO

categorizations on such a large scale are ludicrous

Also like to say that, during the HVWT finals of the Big10's we were leaving and were passing by the PSU section and saw Bo Nickal and a few other wrestlers hugging family members and friends and it made me realize two things, 1.these are just college kids thrilled to be where they are and doing what they love to do, 2. Some of these kids would look a lot better in Black and Gold:rolleyes:

You can't have them! But you're right ... I think we all lose sight of #1 some times.
