Is Franklin elite yet????

Was at a game watch party and was talking to an older gentleman originally from State College and is connected to HS athletic scene. He knows people inside the football program and the general feeling is CJF is done and leaving, likely to USC. I know this a heard it from a friend situation, but sometimes where there is smoke there is fire.

He has the perfect excuse For this season. His #1 QB got hurt and the best backup is starting at another Div I school. He seems to lack the fire a departing coach has. Why wasn’t he up in the face of the officials when his already hurt QB knocked to the ground on an obvious late hit with no PF called. He just doesn’t care, or at least appears that way.

He could take some of his top recruits with him.

He is nothing but a distraction with the USC and LSU talk. Just dismiss it like a good coach would or GTFO!

Ooh, zinger….really got me there. Bet you’re happy about today’s results so you can come out with these pro level insults.
I don't think anyone is happy about today's result, but only you and your ilk are surprised by it.

All of that running your mouth, especially following Iowa, certainly blew up in your face today, jackass! You, Marshall, and the Baron are clueless!

The offensive line is very bad at run blocking. This surprises me in that I feel like run blocking is generally easier than pass blocking (and they seem pretty good at pass blocking), although someone recently pointed out that high school offenses are so pass heavy that many guys right out of HS cannot run block. It is obvious still on the staff to develop that (which they obviously haven't) but their pass pro has been pretty good this year.
There is nothing new this year. They couldn’t run the clock out against USC in the Rose bowl. They couldn’t run the clock out against Ohio St in ‘17 or ‘18.
This is a systemic failure that the program is incapable of fixing.

He’s a 10-2 coach max at PSU. That’s his ceiling. I’m not calling for firing the coach or anything like that, all I am saying is take off the B & W glasses, you’re not getting to the playoffs with James Franklin out of the B10 East.

I agree that this is a bad loss. But to somehow suggest that this somehow defines Franklin's tenure is absurd. This happens to some team every weak. You hate when it happens to your team but it happens. They basically lost a coin flip game in 9 OT (which shouldn't have been to that point) that was greatly aided by the reds.
BS. PSU line was what at -24 points. Show me each week where that happens. Start with last week and then show each week the last ten years. Refs and other excuses have nothing to do with it.

Franklin is a good coach. We just have to admit that this where our program is, and likely will be going forward - top 10-15, with some nice wins and head-scratching losses along the way. For whatever reason, our AD is not willing to tip the scales all the way to become elite…they seem just satisfied with pretty good.

No covering for their lines getting physically destroyed on both sides of he ball by a team like Illinois. I'm afraid we'll wait a very long time to see Penn State in the playoffs, at least under the current format. The program appears to have peaked and may be on a downward trend. Not much to take pride in these days.

EFF HIM!!!
I have been a Franklin supporter and have given him the benefit of the doubt. Today changed everything. I’m disappointed. I’m sad. I’m embarrassed. But, most of all, I am seriously concerned about the future of Penn State football.

I’ve always been a Franklin supporter but truthfully at this point I could care less if he goes. I think he is maxed out here and some fresh blood that actually can put together a competent running game would be a breath of fresh air.

Nothing more frustrating then watching a team run the ball on you. Couple that with the equal inability to run made this a terrible game to watch. Nothing about this made PS deserving to win. They got everything they worked for. A LOSS.

Franklin is his own worst enemy with rumors.just say NO.

Roberson must be really bad,

Too much time off after Iowa loss.

Start recruiting farm boys for the o-line.

We live and die with Cliff.

RB's are horrible.

Brisker dropped the Int on the 2nd OT trick play(which if caught would have won the game right there)
Agreed that the dropped INTs were killers but point is that Penn State never should have been in the position where those dropped INTs mean everything. Even banged up, Penn State should've had enough depth, poise, and talent to handily beat Illinois. Never should have gone to 9 OTs. Overall this game was a coaching/player EPIC FAIL.

All on Franklin. well said.

Got to agree; I was just letting poster know there was a 2nd drop. Most disappointing thing for me was how Ill. controlled both lines of scrimmage.

I had been a Franklin supporter until last season. I decided I would give him another chance this year, but the last 2 games convinced me he is not very good. Great recruiter and that’s about it. Average to bad with regard to the rest of his coaching abilities.

And for those who think he won’t leave because of his supposed incoming recruiting class, they are not signed yet and could follow Franklin to where he ends up.

Noah Cain from two years ago seems like a figment of my imagination. He was never fast, but ran with power and conviction and always fell forward for the extra yard or two. Now he plays as if he thinks it’s a rule that he has to go down at first contact. No way I would have had him in the game in the critical stages (though Lovett’s ole block demonstrates that the RB room just isn’t ready in any sense of the word. And what happened to our “best tight end room in the country?”). The lack of depth and playmakers falls on the coaches as well.

Assuming he can’t right the ship, how does Franklin parlay this season into a job at usc or lsu? If Franklin is considering a change in scenery, he ought to consider that.

PSU will win out. Book it.
I can’t even tell if this is serious. What in the past two weeks makes you think that is even remotely possible. They couldn’t gain 3 yards on the ground to get a two point conversion to defeat the vaunted Illinois D.

Quick summary of Franklin.

Very good recruiter, perhaps a top 10 recruiting coach or better.

Modest game day coach/leader. It's very hard for an average leader to get high end people at the next level down. The casual observer can be fooled, but the best people one level down say, "Why should I work for this guy? He should work for me"

Nothing blew up in my face, Einstein. I think plenty on here are happy about today’s result because it makes them feel justified (like you obviously).

I honestly don’t think they can right the ship. There is absolutely 0 running game and it’s a combo of slow ass running backs, TE’s that just flat out can’t block, and a weak OL. I’m beginning to put more blame on the RB’s. They are just slow and can’t even hit a hole with ANY explosiveness. When Lovett did have a few nice plays today he was removed.

PSU was supposed to have the best group of running backs in the b1g. What happened?

Not an attitude…merely an observation. We haven’t been truly elite since the 90’s. JoePa brought the team back from our early century funk, and occasionally we’ve dabbled in greatness since, but we seem to be at the doorstep and just not willing to take the final step. Again, a top 10-15 program. How is this inaccurate?

We were an elite program for a few periods since 1990: '91-94, '97-'99, '16-'19.

The program has not been consistently elite since the 1970s.
Fair points, though I’d argue that not making the playoffs keeps us out of the elite status over that 16-19 period.

It’s not inaccurate but it’s unacceptable.

Sorry. I think many here confuse being a solid program with being elite. Elite to me is three to five years in a row of consistently winning conference championships and being in the running for a National Title.

Florida State in the 90s was elite.
Miami for 20 years was elite. Florida when Spurrier there was elite. Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson are all in the elite category. Georgia is knocking on the door to becoming elite, but they are not there yet.

The last time we were truly elite was from the early to mid 80s.

Big O,
One of the few reasonable posters here and I applaud that! I really wonder how recruits view the coaches versus the schools they get recruited by. I played D1, long ago, sub division school, and while I loved the coach, I went for the school. While James can recruit, do you think they are blind to some of the obvious "lacks" of the head coach? Penn State has so much to offer but Franklin has since day one had issues with in game coaching. Also, if you are an O line recruit, Penn State has been weak there since Franklin came to the program. I shake my head at how the Oline has continued to decline each and every year. It all starts with the Oline. Look at OSU, Bama, Georgia, Oklahoma........
