...and if Iowa and Virginia Tech are paired in the National Duals, will the Brands Bros. head to Blacksburg?

Looks like the Hawks avoid the Hokies again. They're paired with Edinboro.

If the Iowa coaches had any say (there are strong indications they did) they are an embarrasment to the sport. Personal feeling aside, this is supposed to be for the growth of the sport. I believe that tens of thousands of people would have watched the Iowa VT match. Vs. Edinboro, not so much. I truly hope this costs them some recruits. Teasdale to VT would be perfect.

I understand a lot of the animosity stems from when Brands went from VT to Iowa and four guys were not granted their release, including Metcalf. This would certainly be irritating but aren't they the transfer rules? Isn't it the good will of the team they're leaving to grant a release? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I do believe those are the NCAA Rules which all teams function under... VaTech is entitled to waive or not waive as the see fit.

Exactly my point. Illinois did not waive for Cortez, but ISU did waive for David Taylor. Although in Taylor's case his year to sit out would have been a redshirt year anyway.

Yes, Goldbanger ISU also gave Cael brother a release and also Andrew Long.
What makes this a mess that it is 3 of the 5 kids involved where from Iowa and Metcalf was going where ever Brands was..That is the reason the parents of the Iowa kids and Metcalf where in the AD office the same day..They where told that if Brands left for any place they would like to have a release..Weaver told them face to face that he would allow that...I know it is easy to say get over it but why did they do this?
Look Minn let 2 of there top kids leave this year, Iowa let Mocco go to Okl State a AD should keep his word is all I'm saying.

Your right, he should. But how does what Brands is doing today, change what happened back then. Maybe I just look at things different, but we cant change the past, so why F-up the future?

Grudges do nobody any good.

Oh I understand where the distrust and loathing come from, why not get on the mat and settle it like big boys. I know I would be watching!! The whole country would be watching and I think Iowa gives them a beat down to boot. Talk about revenge and maybe just a little salt in the wound.

Your not making a legitimate comparison here. The wrestlers that went with Brands had one full year of scholarship at VT. Tuition, books, meals, housing, and training. They gave nothing back in return, not one time did they represent the VT as they were all redshirts.

Taylor never enrolled at ISU so he took nothing from them. For his scolly money, Cyler represented ISU many times helping them to Big 12 titles and scoring pts at nationals. Andrew Long was kicked off the team!

The circumstances surrounding the wrestlers that followed Sanderson to PSU have few if any similarities with those who followed Brands to Iowa.

Weaver died in July 2015. Perhaps the grudge could've been buried with him 18 months ago.

I have been seeing the "Orange Bowl" posted here many times. I have been reading the board for many years, but for the life of me, I do not know what the "Orange Bowl" refers! Please enlighten me. :)
Thanks

Last year Vatech was suppossed to wrestle Iowa based on the rankings in these National Dual Championships. Something happened behind the scenes and Iowa ended up hosting NCState instead of Vatech.

Kevin Dresser the coach of Vatech was furious and in an interview said that Brands are "pussies" that didn't want to wrestle them. He then didn't want to use that word so he said he would call them "oranges" instead of saying pussies. The rest of the interview was him calling Iowa "oranges."

Hence the name the "orange bowl" which is basically Iowa vs Va Tech

Interesting enough they are suppossed to meet again this year but it's not happening because Brands refuses to wrestle them. I'm sure we'll see another "orange" laced tirade by Dresser within the coming days

obviously ...like every story..there are two sides..and somewhere in between lies the 'truth' ...and none of us being privy to the actual conversations ...the truth will be in the eye of the beholder ..and for those partial to either side ..the truth is gonna slant a certain way ...

as Iowa folks would tell the story...Brands and the wrestlers were told that if Brands left for Iowa ..the wrestlers were free to go also and since they were't ....it cost Iowa a national championship and screwed the kids and the program ....

the Virginia Tech side says that they were trying to build a major program and hired Brands who had a great recruiting class that would help Va Tech get started....then Brands took the Iowa job ..Va Tech says they brokered a deal where the wrestlers would represent Va Tech for one year while they could try to recruit kids to replace the kids who would leave for Iowa..and that after that year they would be released without penalty ..the wrestlers reportedly left and Va Tech felt their program took a screwing.

Now the AD at Va Tech who brokered this deal/refused the release is not there ..he's dead. Seems very strange to drag this on. Iowa has such a storied history in college wrestling and seems to come off very petty in the national picture of this .... regardless of all the arguments that various posters on HR want to point out to make this seem like a justifiable response.

I don't doubt Brands is sincere in saying he wants to do things to grow the sport but in this instance I don't see how he can justify his actions and just seems spiteful and shortsighted. As far as some Iowa folks feel that coming in to PA to wrestle it helps their recruiting... I don't see that much ....most of the country is seeing this in an unfavorable light regarding Iowa

Does anyone know if there was a negative history between Brands and Dresser, prior to Dresser landing at VTech? Just smells like there is more going on here than VTech not releasing wrestlers.

You know 07 I agree except these wrestlers were not recruits they were on the roster. We are not talking about Loi it is actually VT students using VT resources.

So basically when Brands talks about how he always does what's best for the kids and fans, it's all pretty much bullsh!/.

That's a little harsh. If Dresser was truly involved (however, this seems to be in dispute) costing Metcalf and the others a year of eligibility, I can understand why Brands doesn't want to go there and have VT profit from the visit.

Ok gentleman done discussing this just have to face it Brands has his reasons and no one gonna change them. If they want this national dual deal then set it up with brackets or just have number one and number 2 wrestle because that is the only ones who gain anything from this. Okl State might win 2 matches so I would think most people will save there money and not pay flo to watch a blow out..

Andrew Long was kicked off the team!
Yes for a good reason for a chance to get the help he needed and we all know how that worked out right. Seems like you all can blame Brands for this deal with VT but your boy Cael did no wrong with the Long situation fine with me you live with that and I will live with Brands ok.

Meanwhile, Montell Marion is still permanently suspended.

Or this article:

This excerpt from the article is classic:

Marion’s once-permanent suspension from the Hawkeye wrestling squad was lifted in January 2011. Despite an offered transfer release from the UI, he chose to stay and try to regain his spot on the team.

Marion earned his spot back and received the team’s Mike J. McGivern Award for the team’s most courageous wrestler.

How precisely can something be "once-permanent"? Seems like a rather oxymoronic statement.... Gotta love that Iowa chose to recognize him with an award in 2012 not long before being arrested yet again and multiple further run-ins with the law. Talk about "doubling down" and losing.....

LOL knew that would come..Yes, Marion came and asked for a deal. If I go to rehab and stay clean can I come back and wrestle?
So the AD and Brands said ok give it your best and he did just that. Also, to this day he has had no more problems but he can only go one day at a time cause he can fail at anytime...

There is no shame in trying to better yourself, it should be admired. Ye without sin cast the first stone.

He had no more problems with the law? Really? Pretty sure that's wishful thinking and re-creationism on your part.....

I have no problem with Marion getting a 2nd chance. Good for him for making the best of it.

But "permanent suspension" was not my term -- it was Iowa's, and they obviously didn't really mean it.

If we're completely honest, the difference between Marion and Long was results, not intent or process. In both cases the head coach took a chance based upon his relationship with the wrestler. One worked, one didn't. Risks are just that.

You have no idea what restrictions/conditions Cael did or did not put on Long. You just care to assume the worst. Long did no better at ISU under Jackson or at Grand View. Some people just can't be helped, they have to want to help themselves. You may not get to live with Brands much longer. Another 4th place or worse finish this season, and likely worse next year and Iowa may be looking for another coach.

Long's implosion at Grandview essentially did away with any notion that Cael did a disservice to him by allowing him to wrestle in the second semester at Penn State. Unfortunately even a year in jail wasn't enough to get him on the straight and narrow. It's Russian roulette when you give guys like Long and Marion second chances, some times it works out and sometimes it doesn't.

If I recall could be wrong but that case that you refered to was never taken to court..Since you could find what you did go find why it was dismissed. I don't have the time nor the know how with this tech stuff sorry.

In Iowa, permanent, doesn't mean the same as other places... I have been kicked out of the same bar for life at-least 4 times.. As a matter of fact im taking my wife there tonight for valentines day ..Taco bar Tuesday!

Dance vs Gilman is off, so are about 4 other matches that would have been great.

Ditto if daO$U, who was next in line - not UNL, had been paired with VaTech. I think the Head Tanner lobbied to by-pass VaTech as well ducking the matchups that could impact NCAA seedings in a couple weeks.
