Joel Klatt interviews Coach James Franklin

When you think about NIL, the transfer portal which involves recruiting the players every year to stay, etc., those are just two things none of Franklin's predecessors at Penn State ever had to deal with, and let's face it, NIL is not equal across the board. I think it's harder than ever to be a head college football coach.

Oh I don’t think there is any question about that but that’s not going to change any time in the future.

Coaches in the NFL, NHL, NBA, and MLB don't have to rerecruit their existing players every year. The current situation is absurd.

Great interview. I like coach Franklin, always have. I know he has to start winning the big games and get into the playoffs, but I think we have a good man at the helm of our program. If he doesn't get over the hump in the near future he will be in trouble, but for now I'm fine with him. I think we will have a great year with our new OC and DC.

One thing I take issue with the interview, Coach and Joel didn't mention the impact of all these changes (NIL, transfer portal, power conferences, etc.) on the smaller programs, and basically anyone outside of the SEC and B10. They made great arguments how it helps the athletes, PSU, and the B10 and SEC, but not those outside looking in.

Another huge difference is that Franklin had to work to rebuild a PSU reputation destroyed by the sexual abuse of children. I love Joe, but he built PSU without any impediments in his way while playing a cupcake independent east schedule most years . It’s impossible to compare the two head coaches as the circumstances and the game itself are completely different.
