I don't believe that the BG game was that bad in hindsight. However, this team needs to play better and more consistently to impress people who only look at scores and watch PSU play once or twice a year. The first half defensive and second hal offesive performances in the BG game are unacceptable and won't be enough to beat USC and OSU and maybe even a few other teams.

During the WVU game, Klatt was optimistic about PSU's playoff chances and kept saying that the schedule sets up nicely for us.

Undoubtedly this team has a few unresolved issues, but Klatt is just another talking head in the way to early to know anything with certainty. He should stick to pimping for Michigan.

Good point about Miami. I think what I was getting at is the opinions that pundits generate for PSU are largely and likely about our previous seasons where we are built up as a playoff team, that will finally get over the hump, and then come crashing down. To your point, doing any of these September 'evaluations' or rankings is meaningless until we get into late Oct and Nov, IMO.

True, but there is a slight caveat IMO- it can make getting over the hump in some voters/ playoff committee member’s eyes tougher.

It also didn’t help that Penn State’s schedule took a major hit last week. WVU got beat at lowly Pitt. Wisconsin was dismantled by Alabama. UCLA looked completely inept and got blown out by flippin’ Indiana in LA and Washington lost in Seattle to little brother Wazzu.

It has nothing to do with what he says. . He, Herbstriet, Finebaum, and the new guy Pate, they're all gasbags. I just don't think they are any more knowledgeable than an informed fan but they do have a platform. They are mostly sought out for confirmation bias. BTW I generally agree with your assessment of the program

I think Klatt is better than your informed fan simply because he played the game and a QB no less. Plus he does this for a living so he does research, looks at film, etc. Is he the end all be all, no way. Is he reaching the same general conclusion about Penn State that we are, yes.

I wouldn't overreact to offhand remark, who knows what he means by that. BG wasn't a debacle but it definitely showed some potential soft spots in the PSU D. IL coaches have digested that game thoroughly you can be sure.

Tier 4 Illinois beat Tier 3 Nebraska, and Tier 3 Michigan beat Tier 2 USC. I believe those are the only 2 match-ups of his top 4 tiers so far and he was wrong both times. The "expert" of "experts" is 0 for 2 so far!

Idaho was worse--Boise State is probably thought of much higher than BGSU but, yes, people doubted Oregon because of those 2
