Johnny Petrision got meaningful snaps at LB this year….what is to say JS can’t do the same?
Let's not pass up the fact that he was encouraged to return. No one is automatically given the 6th year. The coaches just secured someone they have evaluated to be useful.....and provide service at LB more than anything. The staff knows the player and vice versa . The lure of having another year to learn LB made sense to him. The portal is a crap shoot and so this is one addition where they don't have to hope the marriage works out.
In a quick look at the PSU recruiting class of 2017, it includes:
- 2 second year NFL players in KJ Hamler and Yetur Gross-Matos
- 2 players who have so far announced their return for a 6th year at PSU -- Clifford and Sutherland
Petrishen played on a bad defense in the worst division of the worst P5 conference this year. Hopefully PSU’s goals in 2022 are higher than giving up 44 points to a team that was 4-4 in the MAC.

He didn't create any controversy. Some old bastard who took offense with his hair created the controversy. Blame the old bastard, not Sutherland.
The defense is in trouble if they’re counting on Sutherland as a LB. He doesn’t have the size to play there in the big ten at 201 pounds. At 5’10” he doesn’t have much room to pack it on in less than a year. I don’t begrudge anyone from coming back or the coaches deciding he is a good fit but his role is probably what we’ve seen the last few years.
