Just 22.1 million viewers watched Ohio State-Notre Dame, the third lowest playoff title game viewership on record.

I think college football is beginning to decline due to NIL and the portal and now as such the championship game had less viewers. I also believe that the lack of a West Coast or southern team in this game contributed to less interest.

I think a major problem is that the game was the day or two after fans just got finished watching 4 NFL playoff games.

In the old days fans watched top college football games on New Year's Day. They were off work with families and it was the thing to do. Now these games are sort of competing with the NFL playoffs.

You're guessing.

First, that game was played almost two months after the regular season ended, which is absurd; it basically became out of sight, out of mind. Second, that game also totally was overshawdowed by the NFL playoffs. I actually was surprised at how few commercials I saw for that game during the Houston-KC game which was broadcast by ESPN. Third, the ratings for that game just show you how even the biggest teams in college football don't move the needle for a lot of people who have no rooting interest unlike the NFL.

If the ratings were that low for a game that featured teams that have two of the biggest fanbases in all of college football, then clearly something needs to be fixed.

Something is wrong because you couldn't ask for better brands in the final four.

I would be interested to know whether ratings for regular season college games have increased in recent years. If so, then I believe that you can attribute the low playoff ratings to specific factors rather than a general decrease in interest in the sport. However, if the regular season ratings also are on the decline, then the sport has some inherent issues that need to be addressed.

Lol 22M on cable is on a decline lmao

That’s what I thought as well. I think the sport has been damaged by all of the changes to the sport. I think there are too many games in the playoffs. I think it should be eight maximum and it should end around New Year’s. Ratings for the playoffs overall do not lie, there is something wrong.

There no issues. Less people have cable every year. They don't pay the price for it. Factor in all those streaming it on ESPN+ .

There's no issue

Lmao...you guys are ridiculous. There not too many teams or playoff games. They stretch it out too long and they need to eliminate CCGs but ESPN is thrilled with those ratings

The fact anyone thinks this is bad is laughable

A 12% decrease since last year is a problem.

You really do not like data that does not support your opinions. It’s a very childish approach.
You don't like data. 22M is a huge night on cable. Look at ESPN's top rated broadcasts in 2024 and explain why you believe this bad. Their executives couldn't be happier.

The issue is that, even with ND and OSU, it was the third lowest viewed playoff championship game. Based on the participants, that has to be concerning, because imagine what the numbers would've been if TCU had been in the game like two years ago.

Because few people want to watch Ohio state honestly. ND has a huge following of American Catholics. So the other percentage watching are Ohio state fans. Watching Ohio state and their long history of win at any cost is a turn off to many, and people won’t give them the satisfaction of watching.

It's not an issue. Cable subscribers are less. You aren't accounting for ESPN+

I watched Maine Cabin Masters. Much more entertaining than listening to herbie blather.

It should be very concerning as they really couldn’t have more popular teams in the championship. I admit I only watched bits and pieces of it as I watched the Knicks game. It’s no longer college football and has by the data turned a lot of people off.

I would point out that there were important newsy events in DC that day, but this board is not political. People may have been tired of TV that day. Or they may have never turned it on.

Regardless, the game was not biggest story of the day. Scheduling may be to blame. There are no excuses since the DC event was scheduled first.

College football is my favorite sport, but because of the Orange Bowl, I didn't watch one second of that game. Even if PSU hadn't been in contention of making that game, I don't know whether I would've watched it. I also didn't watch one second of the Michigan-Washington game, and may have watched a few plays of the UGA-TCU game. If diehard college football fans like me don't watch, then I imagine that most casual fans aren't going to watch.

Are you really a diehard fan?

ESPN's highest rated non playoff game was 4.99M this year with FSU GA Tech but people think 22.1M is disappointing for a cable broadcast excluding all of those that watched on ESPN Plus as I did

For those that didn't read the article
"The audience peaked at 26.1 million viewers during the second quarter (8:30 to 8:45 p.m. ET) when the score was tied at 7."
Shocking people left when ND blew the game open

I won't pay for ESPN and won't watch any games on that network. I did not watch this game. I gave up cable 4 years ago.

Does anyone know how long the NC game has been on ESPN and not available on the regular networks ?

I think there were a couple of issues although 22 million is an OK number.

First, the CF season is just too long now.

Second, I read that many viewers tuned out - and lost interest - when OSU went up 31-7

God, if only this were true. Then why did more people watch cheatin' Michigan last year, or Bama/UGA in any previous year?

ESPN had 17.8 for the Orange Bowl (2nd highest in 20 years), 20.8 for the Cotton Bowl (highest ever for that games), 21.1 for the Rose Bowl (highest rated game of the season until title game) and then 22.8 for the final game.

ND getting down by 24 in the 3rd tuned people out. That means something. Heck, we have posters here who admit they didn't watch for whatever reason. Unlike the NFL, college fans can be territorial. Also, the cfp final doesn't have Super Bowl water cooler draw.

Still, depending on what you read, the slants are obvious. SEC shills gonna claim it's the lack of SEC brands. ESPN is PR'ing victory for the whole shebang of games while admitting its less than last year (Washington kept it competitive into the 4th last year).

I believe it was on MSN but they suggested that the CF season is just now dragging on too long. Could be wrong but didn't they have like 9 or 10 days between one of the set of Playoff games ?

Count me among those who did NOT watch, no interest in the game; two of my three least favorite programs, add Michigan.

This. The NFL playoffs took the spotlight on the weekend and a college game on a Monday is just odd. I forgot the game was even on that day until around dinner time.

What all are they counting as viewers? If just going off traditionally "TV watchers" well people are dropping cable left and right and streaming, and streaming has traditionally been undercounted (or often just not counted at all) in ratings numbers.

I think we all agree that they should condense this but the ratings aren't bad--at all.

Right so not counting ESPN+ isn't telling the full story

I don't have cable and wasn't about to go somewhere to watch a game I had very little interest in. I checked the score the next morning.
