Just 22.1 million viewers watched Ohio State-Notre Dame, the third lowest playoff title game viewership on record.

I think college football is beginning to decline due to NIL and the portal and now as such the championship game had less viewers. I also believe that the lack of a West Coast or southern team in this game contributed to less interest.

I contributed -0- minutes to the viewership because my interest in college football is in serious decline.

The semifinals were down 17% as well. College football may be in trouble.
You have to stop the nonsense. You don't even comprehend what you're reading. ESPN couldn't be happier. Cable is dying. This doesn't factor in ESPN+ views. You just want college football to be un trouble while executives are celebrating and looking to expand. ESPN wants 24

Every business love to see their product usage go down 12% to 17%. Only in Lando’s world!

Look at the dates of the game--look at the times--are the comparable? There's different expectation for these games.
This is not comprehend a Rose Bowl on Jan 1st with no one working is going to have higher ratings than a Friday night game in the middle of January. They fully understand
The stupidity here is beyond belief--it's just that you want to be right because you don't like the large playoff/NIL and you're not
Yes, ESPN couldn't be happier. You're not understanding business at all. Why do you think they want to expand the playoff?

The definition of stupidity is not understanding a drop of 12 to 17% of your product demand is a bad thing.
There’s probably a healthy dose of fear at ESPN. But regardless, on ignore you go. You pollute every freaking thread with nonsense.

Again, you're not understanding or analyzing the data
There's no fear
You're putting me on ignore because you're wrong--that's typical around here--ignoring me just means you'll read it and pretend you don't then talk about me lol

The numbers don’t lie.

The numbers don’t lie.
They do not lie. College football is going to have to figure out a way to re-engage fans in this era that too many of these players only stick around for a year or two. It’s tough to be a fan of mercenaries. We’re actually pretty fortunate at PSU that we have been able to follow players for three or four years as they stuck in the system.

This one seemed like another blowout in the making, and it was a pain to get ESPN without cable. I cancelled my Sling membership a week ago. I thought I had paid for it and it would be good for the rest of the month, but apparently it ended that day and the charge didn't go through. When I discovered I'd have to pay to reactivate to watch the game on Sling I didn't feel strongly enough about the game to pay $70-$80 for it. So I started watching an illegal stream of the Skycam view on Youtube, (I actually liked that - no announcers) then when that got taken down I created a trial account Youtube TV account on a different e-mail address. Meh matchup from a competitive standpoint (brands aside), two teams I (and a lot of others) hate, hard for people to watch, and on a Monday night.

Why watch minor league NFL when you can watch the real thing?

PSU played 16 games. College football has done what every other sport has done, over exposed themselves . I didn’t watch the game because I didn’t care.

What else do I know watch? Everything else. Unless it’s psy wrestling or football I don’t watch . Sports in general is like an over played pop song, less care after awhile. PSU / Miami had 25% of the population watching .

When they played 12 games.

LMAROFL . Add up the TV and in person revenue of the playoffs. This article is just click bait. Revenues were probably tripled or more. The fact that none of the top four teams in the polls made it to the finals, proves the expanded playoff was neded.

You watched 3 more PSU games and enjoyed it. Players are pros now. Stop the whining about more games. I agree that paying players may hurt the sport. Courts will demand that female tiddly winks players be paid too.

IMHO, non revenue sports will be dropped to avoid wasting money rather than enforce pay equity.

Don’t tell me what I enjoy either way. Imagine me giving you old GFY.

That said, Drop all conference championship games. Figuring out a field of 12 is better than a field of four and Penn State will make that field.

Start the post season the weekend after the end of the regular season and finish is close to New Year’s Day .

God bless. We all need it, even the holier than thou crowd. Relax. Good points but also drop bye weeks. It hurt the top 4.

If anything, I think they need to shorten the Playoff field. To maybe just 4 teams again. There's some Playoff fatigue happening here.

I do think 12 is too many as well. I think a good middle ground is 8. The teams are higher quality and the tournament is more sensible and simplistic in its construction.
I said all along that twelve is too many. 11-12 have near zero chance. Fans get viewer fatigue. Plus, seedlings were such that the best games were in the semifinals and title game was anticlimactic.

And I said the top four having a bye was a mistake. Those teams went over three weeks without playing and that really hurt them.

Eight is correct. Three quick games ending New Years Day. That way the competition is mostly worthless season finals of NFL games that best teams don’t even play their starters. Or set it up for NFL wildcards when best teams have a bye.

Wrong… that’s how much the Buckeye collective raised during the broadcast!

I didn't watch it at all. I would have watched if there was a very good chance of a meteor or missile hitting the stadium. Apparently a lot of others felt similar.

Several things have happened at the same time: The playoffs, conference expansion, NIL, bowl game 'opt-outs', and the transfer portal. All of these can have effects on college football popularity. I think the playoffs have had a mostly positive effect, the others have had a mostly negative effect.

To compare ratings properly, add up the ratings of all the bowls from last year to all the bowls and playoff games from this year. I suspect the first couple of playoff rounds did better than the non-playoff bowl games of the past. That said, the system could certainly be improved (play some OOC games a couple of weeks before labor day so the playoffs can finish before new years day) but I think the playoffs are a godsend.
