The NCAA opened the flood gates with "Carte blanche" transfer portal & players are going to try to use it to their advantage. If they believe a better opportunity exists, they will move on. Loyalty, as we knew it years ago, from coaches and now players is done. It truly is free agency @ the college level. The coaching staffs will adjust, but the players need to understand that if/when they move on they might not find "greener pastures". It will be a lesson in the real world after college. I have no ill will toward TS.
It is happening to many of the big time programs in CFB: Alabama, Clemson, OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, etc

New norm, don't get bitter. Just don't count on all skill players hanging around for their opportunity @ the same school. Too much hype @ HS level builds up their expectations that many of them should start and star immediately instead of sitting a year or two to grow and mature.

When you say loyalty you mean coaches taking advantage of kids right?

The loyalty was one way and that is because the kids had no choice but to be loyal.

To my understanding the only significant changes are that, one, coaches can’t block transfers and, two, that the transfer portal allows players to more easily shop themselves. I honestly don’t see these changes as “opening the floodgates.”

And the sitting out a year rule has pretty much gone away, which is the biggest difference.

It's like you're talking to a door. Why are Neshaminy grads the only ones smart enough to grasp this?

Franklin is a bit old-school in that be openly preaches relationships, he bonds with players’ families, etc. He seems to be content at Penn State, and I could see him finishing his career in Happy Valley. His mindset is increasingly becoming antiquated, sadly. I hope Franklin never strays from these convictions, but I speculate he is concerned about the future, with finding student-athletes and families with similar values.

Kids know that coaches will recruit players every year to come and compete. They even host them! Nothing in life is guaranteed. Just because some recruitnik gave you four stars because you dominated at east central capital high school doesn’t mean anything once you get there.

My son learned the harsh reality of college athletics...every year the coaches are trying to find someone better than you at your position. It’s just the way it is and if a kid can’t handle it, he should not play or should look at smaller colleges where their spot may be guaranteed for four years because they’re so thrilled to get them.

I believe I said that loyalty as we knew it from coaches and players is really lacking. It will only get worse. It has been that way with coaches, but now players are following the lead of the coaches.

I am fine with the new rule. I hope they open a window between season end and sometime before spring ball. After that, the kid is committed to the season.

Difficult to draw a comparison to the past when coaches had virtually complete control over a player. We'll never know how many players asked for releases that were nixed by a coach. Similarly, we'll never know how many players never bothered because they strongly believed that the coach would say no and future ramifications wouldn't be pleasant.

That would require change in the rule that goes way back. That's not going to happen. Going forward, the NCAA is never going to promulgate rules that work to the disadvantage of players. The genie is out of the bottle and the havoc it wreaks is going top be fun to watch.

I was the biggest JVP guy on earth. I couldn't be happier with CJF. It isn't just a PSU thing, cause I really couldn't stand O'Brien.
I think Franklin is shrewd and driven. He's like a great natural hitter who has never seen a curve ball. He needs to see a few and he will learn to go with it and take it to the opposite field.

The new rule would be fine if there weren't coaches and administrators dumping the entire database to the media.
