LIVE FROM PEGULA.... #5 vs. # 9... HUGE game!

Down 1-0 on some really sloppy end to end defense. We did just start a 5 minute power play.

Hamilton would have been cut from a beer league C team for that lazy D play leading to the Gopher breakaway goal.

Good response though. Can't dig a hole against these guys.

Haven't seen any games this year but it sounds like the defense has been really lacking this year at times.

My issue with the D for some time has been (imo) they can be over-active because of the emphasis on shots and offense....and against teams that are good in transition it leaves them vulnerable to the odd man rushes. The D zone isn't necessarily that bad in terms of positioning but we don't really have a physical presence.

Tonight's lapse was simply Hamilton whiffed on a lazy attempt at a step up stick check in the neutral zone. It's bad enough that he missed but worse when you consider as a result of whiffing we had both D on one side (just feet from each other, no less) and back checkers that, while hustling, couldn't make up for it.

Nate Sucese jams it home off a BEAUTIFUL blind pass from the Russian Smirnov for the short lived 2-1 lead followed up immediately by a blast off the inside of the post to tie it 2-2. New game again
Let's Go State ... beat the Gophers.

3-2 Gophers now off a horrible pass through center ice back fires and ends up back in our net. End of 2nd period.

Someone want to explain that interference call to me? Hands Minny the lead 4-3.

No way to sugar coat it - our D is soft, sloppy and for most of the last 6 weeks against better competition it's been quite evident this unit is the difference between the team being a contender vs. pretender.

Minnesota is good, no doubt, but the way Hamilton, Pedrie and Autio (who don't exactly lack experience) have been exposed in a game like this is extremely discouraging.

Minny is VERY good...we are VERY young...takes time...have patience...

Sounds like basketball.

Yes...it does. and PSU Basketball WILL be good...and our Hockey Team...when you think about it...shocking how well they are doing while being such an early entry into D1...

Though...maybe we should fire every coach...like we wanted to fire Franklin...fire them all...thats the answer !

It's fair to point out it's a young team (although Hamilton and Autio are juniors and Pedrie now has around 45-50 games at this level under his belt), but the mistakes this D has been making are pretty fundamental....whether that be puck management or over-relying on open ice poke checking as opposed to playing the body, we just aren't a very tough team in these aspects to play against.

I agree about the hockey program. Gadowsky has done a great job. Hopefully he can continue to build depth. That said, I am ready to FIRE. HIM.

I am hopeful that once we start to consistently bring in high caliber players our system will start to change. Our defense obviously needs some work. But I do not like our offensive system. When it is working against lesser quality teams it is great to see 5+ goals a game. However, when we start to play top tier teams like Minny, OSU and whoever we would play in the tournament if we make it, the shoot from everywhere style doesn't translate well. They are too good and we need more net front presence to cause more ciaos and get some dirty goals. I think Gadowsky is doing it because to start with the talent gap was so wide that we had to in order to compete, and I think he has done a great job, but in order to compete against top tier I think he will need to make adjustments.
