LIVE THREAD: Penn State vs. Lehigh (Sunday, Dec. 5th, 2 PM)

-- The bug is still biting this team.

-- Bartlett lost against a very unorthodox opponent, good learning experience.

-- Tony Negron wrestled well, even better than well, taking a solid opponent to the brink. Best match of his college career, looking at his resume. Time will tell.

-- Nick Lee reached deep on Friday, looked better today, but still recovering. CONGRATS ON THE 100th WIN OF YOUR CAREER, NICK!

-- Starocci is still getting better. Scary.

-- RBY looked great, considering how he felt last week.

-- Edsell keeps getting the job done.

-- Ball is filling in nicely, great weekend for the kid.

-- Dean is solid. Early observation is that takedowns are tougher up at 197, but one can't question his mat skills. Given a full season, neutral offense will improve. Anxious to see how 197 plays out. We have two great options.

Next up, the Collegiate Duals!

It's not rocket science why there's major holes in our lineup when wrestlers go out. Your backups aren't going to be NQ level guys at all 10 weights. Think about that depth, that means you have two Top 30 level guys? That's just not going to happen. We actually do have that it appears though at some weights. For example, 197, we have 2 AAs. For 165, I think we have 2 qualifier level guys but no AA level guy right now.

When you face teams like Penn and Lehigh who have a Top 20 kid at a weight we have someone out, it's going to make a dual close. Lehigh had 10 qualifiers last year ... they also had 0 AA's. But that makes hell of a scary dual team.

Robbie Howard was supposed to be our 125 this year. He's hurt and we're waiting for Hildebrandt. A year off is exactly what Howard needs to be honest to really get that shoulder healthy.

Bartlett is hardly a hole at 149, he's going to be a kid that takes some Ls but Cael trusts him to win close matches to get on the podium in March. Today was a fantastic learning experience and I mentioned taking a L might be exactly what Bartlett needs. SVN will be a better fit at 149 next year but he needs to get healthy and clean a few things up in the room.

Berge was supposed to have been our 157 from 2020 to now. He had what should have been career ending concussions and then completely blows his knee out. We have scrappy kids behind him.

Our admissions screwed us out of Evan Wick but we still have 2 solid kids at that weight. My guess is Facundo needs to show something at the Southern Scuffle for Cael to believe he's ready to go.

Who knows with Joe Lee. Fact he didn't get an extra match today IMO shows there's more than meets the eye here.

Tony Negron:

Joined Penn State after prior seasons at North Carolina State...Wrestled in open tournaments at N.C. State...Went 6-8 with as a true freshman in opens (2-2 majors, 0-0 techs, 1-1 falls)...Went 15-6 as a sophomore in opens (4-1 majors, 2-0 techs, 3-1 falls)...Both seasons at 149...Lettered five seasons at North Babylon High School in New York...Team captain one season...Considering an RPTM major at Penn State.

Stats via WrestleStat:

Tony Negron, a kid who hardly anybody knew was even on the roster and no big resume of HS accomplishments, comes out and almost takes out the #10 ranked kid in the country in a controversially called match(which could have gone either way) I'm sure most of us thought this was not going to go well fro PS at 157 today. What a nice surprise out of nowhere. Loved his aggressiveness on his feet. Certainly wasn't intimidated by his opponent or being in his first dual meet. Hope he gets another shot at 157.

My younger brother, and sky is the limit with this coaching staff. He gained a new focus after high school and it’s been showing since he got to college. I haven’t frequented these boards in a while but some of you may remember I was an Ohio State fan. Been converted to Penn State since he got there :)
Welcome back and welcome to the family! We're very happy to have Tony as you can tell.

Loved the way Tony wrestled today. Really fit the mantra of Penn State, saw him smiling and relaxed on the sidelines at all time and was attacking. He was equal as can be with an AA level guy in his first Penn State match ever.

Not going to lie, seeing him look bad to Cael who did the cross arm to signal how to defer his choice made me smile a bit. Like a "How do I do this again coach"

Bingo on the bolded. Could have kept wrestling to leave no doubt, but instead held position and locked eyes with the ref to haggle for the call.
Looking at the ref for a call/stall is a waste of time and effort. Wrestle through the situation and get your points.
I agree with you whole heartedly!

Awesome to have you active in the board! I hope your brother continues to get into the lineup and show everyone what he's capable of.

Did some searches on him, all of which were consistent with the PSU Profile you posted, and none of which are consistent with your claim that he has used eligibility with NC State. He did train with the NC State RTC (which is not the same as wrestling for NC State) - I saw something that also said he attended a Community College during part of that time (but did not compete for that Institution - don't even think the Community College sponsored wrestling).

Not sure what his eligibility is precisely, but can't find anything that suggests he used any eligibility at NC State - i.e, was ever enrolled at NC State and a member of their Wrestling Team.

Tell your lil bro great job today and keep it going. Excited to see him again. If I recall back a few years ago you were one of the first ones to tell us how good Shak would be before many of us realized. Welcome back

If the wrestlers are face-to-face on their feet, but still engaged with one-another and no clean break, I believe the Official can delay the escape call as it is only called as a 2-point reversal should former down wrestler go back to mat on top. However, even in that situation, isn't that point supposed to be awarded if the wrestlers go OB? Wouldn't that also apply to the match ending?

I got to see that Jim Mulliuns. He must have been there on a recruiting weekend. He is a big, big boy. Do we have a chance of landing him or a better question do we need him with Kerk?

Think he's class of 2024? I'd be shocked if Kerk is here past 2024. The bigger hurdle to clear is if he wants to play football instead.

EDIT: He's class of 2023. Can redshirt then take over for Kerk.

Negron was outstanding today. I was very impressed by him but his dad needs added to the coaching staff or at least add him as the mascot. His energy was something fun.
If the Lion with the Crowd Director and Cowbell could be impromptu instead of scripted, it would be WAAAAY more fun.

he's a big football recruit too I think. hope he picks wrestling (unless he picks you of course).

Yeah idk if he counts as a big football recruit. Offers from Rutgers/Temple and no rating so far per 247. Will be interesting to see. Possible the Rutgers scholarship itself would be enough for him to forgo college wrestling.

By comparison, Ben Kueter is an 86 on 247 and has 4 Power 5 offers including obviously Iowa ...

who knew the generational point scoring talent of guys like DT, Ruth, Zain, Nolf, Bo, etc...was so hard to replicate???

if it was that easy to score bonus points, everybody would do it. cael didn't make some sort of revolutionary discovery. he just had to horses to do what nobody had really done before and those horses are hard to find. this new generation of top guys in the lineup are still incredible, but stylistically aren't pinners/techers like the last couple generations.
I don't know RBY, Dean,CStar,Lee and Kerk are pretty good with pushing things to bonus lol but I get your point

If anyone thinks @js8793 is here to just backhand Penn State, on the HR right now, he's literally telling them to relax with the PSU doomsday scenarios some fans want to present.

You'd think he's a PSU fan on that board ... but nope, he's just being objective as always.

Yep. However, if the top wrestler regains control there is no scoring action. He needed to simply wrestle and maintain or improve his position. He stopped to basically ask if he could have the escape now, allowing the top kid to reattach trying to regain/maintain control.

i stand corrected. i remember people talking about him as a potential 4/5 star when he was a freshman, but he probably hasn't gotten big enough/panned out in that way. still d1 offers are nothing to sneeze at. that shot at millions in the nfl can be alluring compared to wrestling.

doing my best to to counteract the bad juju those guys are creating for my hawks.

Negron ... 2 takedowns on Humphreys ... arguably in on 2 more. Give me that guy going forward.
With all of the talk about Joe Lee this off-season, and Claw since the season started, I hadn’t heard one word about Negron 🧐. It’s like he appeared out of thin air. Where have we been hiding this guy? 😳

P3: Bryant up and out to make it 5-4, Bartlett with 1:08 in RT. Bryant goes double unders and horses Bartlett down for 2. 6-5 Bryant with no RT . Bartlett looks like he's up and out but the ref doesn't give the escape. Penn State challenging. Some brutal ref work here today.
That's just Angel being Angel..remember how he tried to all but give the match to Fix in the national finals last year. For some reason Angel seems to have a negative bias towards Penn State...after that finals match last year between RBY and Fixx I thought we'd never see Angel in Rec Hall to ref a match.

I notice he's from North Babylon, which is in Suffolk County on Long Island, not too from from where Shak attended high school. I don't pay too close attention to the top kids coming out of Long Island as I once did, so I'm curious how Negron finished in HS. I'd not even seen his name until today and was taken by how relaxed and natural he was when on paper at least he should've been outclassed.

EDIT Just re-read your comment, I initially thought I'd snipped it and didn't realize you were literally saying that he's your younger brother. So disregard most of the above. Congrats and, uh, WE ARE!

Not a bad loss. Especially coming back from injury .. it was bound to be a tight one if Bastida stayed off bottom ... and he did.
ref totally blew the second period takedown. that's not a judgment call. the hand touched. they made a rule specifically for that position and he just kind of decided to ignore it lol he gets that and he rides him out to take a 4-2 lead to the third and bastida needs two takedowns to beat him.

with that being said, he didn't do enough to make me feel like he was totally wronged. looked lethargic. he is what he is.

So, why hasn't Negron been to any other opens? He has NO resume that would help him get over the hump for an at-large bid. We've got guys like David Evans (ranked #22 at WS, by the way), a backup at 133 behind a returning national champion, with 7 matches. Why do the weights in the lineup where we're actually struggling not have guys with 7 matches, too?

He's going to face the meat grinder of the B1G regular season + B1G tournament. He needs to get to some tournaments, get a lot of matches in and do it quickly.
For years I joked that Cael was going to bring in some mega-superstar from Japan or Russia that none of us have ever heard or seen, and then today I was sitting there going did that really happen here?

Did you ever see that movie Blue Chips when Nick Nolte goes does into the deep bayou to find a Shaquille O’Neal dunking on dudes in a barn? I think Cael has that in him.

He's working on it. Nolf and Snyder are on a scouting trip in Dagestan.

People had not heard of Negron in the Wrestling community. Luckily, Cael was introduced to Negron via contacts in the Waterboy community. :)
