LIVE THREAD: Penn State vs. Lehigh (Sunday, Dec. 5th, 2 PM)

Waiting for Cael here, Penn State now with 15 days off before the collegiate duals.

Cael says they knew a week ago that this weekend would be difficult. Says it was a chance for guys to step up.

Ah come on, the be flu just ran through the squad. I bet my house we have more bonus points this year at nationals vs last year
who knew the generational point scoring talent of guys like DT, Ruth, Zain, Nolf, Bo, etc...was so hard to replicate???

if it was that easy to score bonus points, everybody would do it. cael didn't make some sort of revolutionary discovery. he just had to horses to do what nobody had really done before and those horses are hard to find. this new generation of top guys in the lineup are still incredible, but stylistically aren't pinners/techers like the last couple generations.

P3: Seymour takes down. RBY cuts and quickly jumps over a Seymour shot to make it 12-4. Cuts, 2 more. Very, very active today for RBY. A go behind makes it 16-6. Single to left leg makes it 18-6 and the crowd is dying for a stall call. I think Seymour has been relatively active tbh. RBY cuts to 18-7. Biiiig double late to make it 20-7 then a RT points makes it 21-7.

Penn State 4, Lehigh 4.
not active enough he should be teching this kid!!

I realize these early duals don’t mean much in the scheme of things but man gotta give credit to Edsell these last 2 matches. Two tossups and two wins.
Ball came up big as well.
No clue what’s up with Joe Lee but I’ll take the kid we saw today over BearClaw all day.
Bartlett had some brain farts today, but not too concerned with him. Feel like he’ll be in close ones all year.
Yeah give me the kid that will shoot and try to put points on the board versus trying to win a match 2-1. Negron comes out of the witness protection program and he was letting it fly. Props for that. As for Ball and Edsall job well done. These kids are holding down the fort while guys get well and winning matches that they are in no way the outright favorites. Gutsy effort.

Sorry I keep coming back to this but Tony Negron was wrestling club at a community college. I can't imagine he has much coaching there at all. Today, he looked like he was still learning the nuances of wrestling at times. Cael had to signal to him how to defer his choice to the 3rd. I'm pretty intrigued to see how he keeps developing.

Cael says that the early calls were just a matter of a number of tough judgement calls. Says Bartlett wrestled well but that he needs to wrestle through the position at the end.

Also confirms that Lee has been sick. Said the Penn match was the first time he wrestled live since Oregon State.

Wood weighed in at 281.

I'm old enough to remember him as a HS 220.

I’ve got you beat Jefe, the first time I ever heard of him was at PJW’s in 2011 when he was a man child and rag dolled then pinned everyone (including my teammates young cousin) in under 2:00 on his way to winning a PJW title at 11&12 200lbs

I heard a little bit of RBY in the post match interview. He said he couldn't go Friday because he had been "contact traced". To me, that suggests Covid, not the flu. Could have been contact with someone associated with the team, or not. However, and this is not getting political, this is strictly a discussion on the team and it's hopes for the season, I really hope everyone around this team gets fully vaccinated so there's less of a chance that someone misses time in March because of this crap.

The Joe West of NCAA Wrestling refs
Nah. West was wrong often enough, but his main thing was to initiate confrontation so he could run people and be the tough guy.

Rivera isn't confrontational, he's just wrong way more than a really bad official should ever be.

For those wondering about Seth, I think he will only wrestle if he's needed for the post season actually (god forbid something happens to Kerkvliet) Keep in mind he's 300+ pounds now.

Really liked what we saw today at 157. It was just one match, but I’m excited to see him wrestle more.

Not concerned at all about BB. He opened up a bit and gained some good experience for doing it. Really thought he had that escape too.

Edsell just keeps winning. And if there was a reason to be concerned about his close wins, we have someone pretty good waiting in the wings.

Kudos to Lehigh. They brought it. Respect.
Is that Van Ness looking over Bartlett shoulder?

LOL Cowboy Joe West. Not saying he's thin-skinned, but he's at risk of bleeding out in a 3 mph wind.

The Bartlett match was some of the worst reffing I’ve seen in a while. There is no reason what so ever to have stalemated the match on the edge that led to the reversal and if that isn’t an escape I don’t know what is.

He was in the Wolfpack RTC. Finished second at the NCO’s in 2019. He was just a little overwhelmed with the atmosphere. This is the biggest dual he’s ever been in

Rivera should be escorted out of Rec Hall and arrested for assault. He is blatantly screwing these guys.
From my seat it was straight up ridiculous for Negron. The first TD negated Tony had both legs wrapped at the thigh and Humphreys bellied to the mat, palms down. Then, and only then, did Humphreys reach for the leg which is apparently why Rivera decided it wasn’t a take down. If he were applying reaction time, it doesn’t include Humphreys not engaged with his hand and being allowed to reach out after at TD to become a non TD.

The second non-TD Negron was cross body, again with both legs wrapped and head to the side, then Humphreys sat on his arse. TD. Then Humphreys shifts to move Negron off balance over his left hip and somehow Rivera still decides it’s no control. When it should have been control first and Negron fighting to keep it.

Bartlett’s non call, while it should have been an escape, is also a mistake on Bartlett. Don’t look up and wonder at the ref. You have 9.8 seconds to get 1. Go Get it. Push away. Don’t leave things in a refs hands. It was an escape tho.

And just for fun, I had leave Rec to head to the airport during Max’s match. But I got to hear Byers scream with glee over Gabe’s pin. Twice. ;)

P3: Campbell goes under and Lane working hard for the turn. Nearly gets it but Campbell is able to roll through. Lane with a boot in on the right side. Lane rides it out for an 11-3 major decision.

Lehigh 4, Penn State 0.
Happy
Looking at his profile, Negron was at a community college and wrestling club himself. Props, that takes a ton of discipline. Cael had to show him how to defer his choice even lol

So, why hasn't Negron been to any other opens? He has NO resume that would help him get over the hump for an at-large bid. We've got guys like David Evans (ranked #22 at WS, by the way), a backup at 133 behind a returning national champion, with 7 matches. Why do the weights in the lineup where we're actually struggling not have guys with 7 matches, too?

He's going to face the meat grinder of the B1G regular season + B1G tournament. He needs to get to some tournaments, get a lot of matches in and do it quickly.

Was injured before the season started

Cael obviously is intentionally sabotaging the kid.

Someone needs to get Ironhead a headset with mic attached. The audio is going in and out every 10-15 seconds.
That’s what he always has nowadays.

FYI, saw Negron having a fairly lengthy chat with Rivera after the team handshakes. Would love to know what was discussed. Maybe the. weather or something.

I was wondering if there was a reasonable explanation for a lack of resume for a kid that appears to be quite good at wrestling. Good enough to at least get sent to some opens before now. Turns out he was injured, per NYWrestler94.

This is perfect. We're right where we want to be in early December. Last year, we looked like this in late January and early February and we still figured it out by the big dance.

1. Starocci barely was hanging on against non NQs (Fisher/Krattiger) Hell, if Washington didn't choose bottom, he probably bonuses Carter.
2. RBY/N Lee had a couple why didn't they at least major their guy moments (Mattin/Luigs)
3. Heck even Aaron Brooks had a tough match against a backup 174 bumping up (Bullock)
4. Kerkvliet was bedridden with sepsis
5. Berge looked like he was destined to wrestle 3-1 matches until the end of time (like Bartlett now) whether it's a win or loss.

Far as I'm concerned, we have almost 4 months to go. Cael has mentioned before he doesn't want his guys looking "that good" in October. You only hold that peak for so long then you burn out.

I think Rivera really F***ed Beau with some of the worst calls I have ever seen. But, I think Beau wrestled A very bad tactical match and played right into the few strengths Bryant had going for him, upper body and FUNK. If they meet again , I think its an easy win for Beau.

Bingo on the bolded. Could have kept wrestling to leave no doubt, but instead held position and locked eyes with the ref to haggle for the call.

You apparently know of this young man. What’s your prediction for his future in the blue and white singlet?
My younger brother, and sky is the limit with this coaching staff. He gained a new focus after high school and it’s been showing since he got to college. I haven’t frequented these boards in a while but some of you may remember I was an Ohio State fan. Been converted to Penn State since he got there :)
