Longtime Berwick football coach George Curry has died

Mt. Carmel also held kids back in middle school, so they had the advantage of age in high school. Sports Illustrated did an article on them "red shirting" kids. Why do it if it doesn't provide an edge?
Have a nice day.
SI article?? Better dust off that issue and re-read that one.
Whitehall alum, Parkland resident. If I'm a prick, he can suck me.
Can't because you never stop sucking on it yourself.

The story I heard (and I might have heard it from Phil one year at Scranton) was that Curry sent a kid on a visit to PSU and felt that Joe didn't extend a courtesy to the kid Curry felt he should have and that pissed Curry off.

A few things:

  1. The fact that Phil may have said it should give one pause.
  2. I don't know the story behind the supposed friction between George & Joe, but, it's been way overblown by PSU message board folk. George brought groups of kids to tour campus every year, and it wasn't just Berwick kids.
  3. Truth be told, Gus was one of the last true Division I recruits Berwick had, so saying Joe/George hated each other is ridiculous.

Ok Dad.
Now I lay me down to rest
Knowing that you've proved your best
Im sure your ego got a boost
Knowing that you rule the roost.

By the way......Geno Lewis was coached by Curry.

So yeah, he hated Paterno.

You definitely know what you're talking about.

Hey Dad I think you're preaching to the wrong kid here.
Speaking of long days I think you need to tuck yourself in now.

No matter how you look at the means to his end, he still brought a lot of pride to that area.

And I will always remember that my first football game as a high school student, my CD Rams walked into Crispin Field in 1991 and handed the Bulldogs a rare home defeat. Other than our state championship win a few years ago, that win at Berwick is probably #2 on the all-time list.

They beat the crap out of WPIAL teams in the 90s, and some big time teams from other states. The only team to smoke Berwick was St. Ignatius from Cleveland.

Curry's methods, as far as weight room and other preparation, were way ahead of their time.

They played Cleveland St Ignatious back to back years and split the series. As I recall, both teams, especially Ignatious, were considered powerhouses and were regularly ranked in USA TODAY'S rankings. Thought it was fun that the two programs made such an effort to play each other.

A friend of mine was selected to the Big 33 team when Curry coached it. I distinctly remember him describing to me what an effective motivator Curry was. This was also the same year we had a nice team, the year before their 1st MNC, and people actually thought we had a chance to win. Curry exposed every weakness we had. His preparation was a difference maker.

You are correct. I believe one of those St. Ignatius teams was led by Dave Ragone, who went along to play collegiately at Louisville.

Berwick also played, and always beat HD Woodson from Washington DC. Those teams featured Byron Leftwich.

Coach Curry was my position coach when I went to the PennState summer football camp.I really enjoyed working with him.I remember when Nick Gasparato ,was the oline coach at Penn State, came by and start yelling at the guys in my group because he didn't like the way we did a certain technique the Penn State way.It was a technique I was never taught so it was new to me.He jumped my shit and I was like to hell with this guy ,he is a dick.Coach Curry came over and whispered in my ear after he left,Son you can play ball for me,don't listen to that jackass.Coach gave me his number and said call him if I need help being recruited.I would have run thru a brick wall for him and I just spent only a week with him.

My issue with Berwick winning mythical national titles is they never had to play the best teams in PA because they were always in 3A. That always bothered me. Outside of a couple ACC teams they faced bogus competition year after year. The WPIAL was loaded at 4A many of those years and we know Berwick NEVER played Central Bucks West. I will always respect Curry, but Pettine is the best coach is PA history IMO.

The only player who made any impact from Berwick who went to Penn State in the 80's-90's was Gus Felder. I can remember boatloads of players coming to Beaver Stadium playing for Rutgers, Temple, and other eastern schools but the only impact player to play for PSU was Felder.

Felder remains active in coaching at the college level. Spent time with Georgia and now on the Miami staff - strength and conditioning. I remember him crediting Coach Curry as a mentor.

EPC is actually a West Pittston guy, I think. I'm an Old Forger, now a Zephyr...
