Why do they have to sacrafice going to one for the other? Obviously the Olympics are and should be the top priority but I'm just curious why it has to be one or another? The Open Mat has a good thread on Twitter about this.
To summarize:
1. Not much confidence in medical care in Serbia if someone got sick. Would need to medevac back home.
2. Serbia wanted to do an NBA-style bubble, but that got rejected (presumably by UWW) due to money.
3. Unstated, but punch in the face obvious from the thread: USA Wrestling is willing to sacrifice 2020 Worlds for 2021 Olympics.
Which IMO is the right priority if a choice must be made. Given that the IOC tried to kill the sport just a few years ago, a no-show by Team USA (translated: no TV ratings) would be suicidal.
What is going to get bad? The calling off of events? So, the sport I participate in and watch quite a bit is cycling. Bike races are being shut down left and right in Europe right now. Some of the biggest races on the calendar, that have been going on for 100+ years, are being cancelled.
Races that were already delayed significantly (Giro d'Italia...the Italain Tour de France), from May to October, is having its route amended AGAIN because they are NOT being allowed to enter France to hit a couple of high mountain passes.
It's about to get really bad in Europe, and the US.
I know David Taylor said he was looking forward to being there. Can someone go even if their country does not? I'm assuming no lol but just curious.
