Mark Hall beats Marinelli

Marinelli is really really good. I think he'll do really well at Iowa. It's not fair to put him down because he lost to someone the caliber of Hall. As others have mentioned, guys named Nolf, Marstellar, Massa, and Smith have suffered similar fates against Hall. He's really special.

The recent interview on Pa Powr said he had decided to delay his choice.

Have to wonder if available money at PSU may have something to do with the delay. No inside knowledge here whatsoever. Just a program outsider wondering in public.

Is Marinelli overrated or is he really the #3 P4P wrestler right behind Spencer Lee and Mark Hall. Why is ranked higher than someone like Chad Red or Suriano?

C Pyles has been razzing Willie about him and Reenan being too high for months. Suriano's body of work dwarfs either

Funny Tognetti post on OSU board about Hall:

Since you brought it up, don't want to sound like sour grapes since we didn't get Mark but his dad is a real work of art. I'm sure there was a lot of coaches out there that weighed how good Mark is and dealing with his dad. Cael will have his hands full.

Thanks for the explanation. I really didn't see all the fuss about Marinelli and why the IOWA board would think it would be close. The #3 P4P wrestler should not be majored by anyone in high school. I know he beat Manville, but that was in OT and by one takedown. And others have beaten Manville also, but Manville has proven to come back and beat top wrestlers. I think Manville/ Marinelli would be another close match and much closer than Marinelli/Hall.

The kid is good. It was a 1 point match in the second. So, Hall just exploded at the right time and caught Marinelli on a few moves. The last time they met in Freestyle two years ago it was only a two pint difference at the end. So, it's only one match.

That would mean Cael has inadequately planned for him. I think we can safely strike that as a possible reason.

He also beat Manville around the dip in Manville's form where he lost multiple times in a short period of time, including twice to Hidlay. I'd like to see them wrestle again.

The main criticism of Marinelli is that, like many guys from his school (St Paris Graham), his national tournament participation aside from Ironman (in Ohio) is minimal. It's easy to keep from losing if you're not being constantly tested by high level rivals. Of course this criticism was aimed at Bo Jordan as well and he's clearly a stud.

Sure he is, but there is no reason for him to be on pfp ahead of Suriano for example.

Marinelli did nothing to stop Hall once Hall got going. Marinelli cannot score on Hall. If they wresled again, I doubt it would be close. I think it's just as likely that Hall would Tech him on their next match than for it to be close again.

I meant if they wrestled tomorrow at their existing skill set. Posters are saying that it was a close match except for *some excuse*. I just never thought it would be close. And if they wrestled tomorrow, I still think Hall beats him decisively.

I would never discount the IOWA wrestling room. They churn out National Champs like we do and still have an outside shot at winning the Team Race.

Don't discount the Iowa room. Gulibon beat Clark at first too.

Hopefully that's right, and I'm guessing it probably is. But it's also not impossible that someone else might be able to offer more money than PSU at this particular time given all the national talent that's come into the program during the last few years, including the three recruits this year. Again, I have no idea what the family's financial situation might be or how much the level of financial aid might play into the situation.

Its been a while but Beau Breske has had 2 close matches with Hall. In the Chessehead as a frosh Hall won 3-0. In the summer of 2014 at the Cadet Freestyle Hall won 4-1. There may be a wider gap now but at least he wasn't majored.

You have Gulibon, Morelli, Beitz and Phipps departing next year, so likely not a ton of scholarship $ tied up in those 4. Spencer Lee is a full ride kid I would think. I have to think Mark Hall, Manville and Suriano commanded fairly high scholarship $ (likely offset by the departures of Morgan Mac and Nico). I would love to see the inner workings of how scholarship $ is worked out and divided. Guess its time to dip into the unlimited NLWC slush fund ;)

Hall will be in the line up in 2 years not 3. He will red shirt next year then be in the stating line up....

"Hall will be in the lineup in 3 years not 2. He will grey shirt at the OTC, then red shirt in Lorenzo then compete in the 2018 tourney as a RSFR!!!"

See? We're all capable of taking a big keyboard pooh right in the living room of this board. And that's what declarative definitives are on the internet: pooh on our shared carpet.

I disrespect this style of internetting. If you're gonna be this bad at it, could you at least try to be amusing? If not, please take your poohey bottomed keyboard outside in the rain.

With all my love,

Another way to look at it is with 9.9 scholarships, you have 1 per weight. Going forward, we will have Cortez and Suriano on ship for the first two weight classes.

Iowa will have the following kids coming in:

120lbs- #2/#2 Justin Mejia (2017) #5/#7 Justin Renteria (2017) #8/#9 Jack Wagner (2016)

I don't believe they have any more money to offer, than what we do...

Say what? After Cael had a year to put a viable team together. Do you actually think about what you were saying before you posted this nonsense?

Three National Champs... to 9. That's 3 times the number of National Champs... champ.

Iowa while a good tournament team... lacks the added firepower at Nationals that has led to Penn State widening the gap in National Champions and hence National Titles. Think and use data before you post. Complete drivel you slopped out of your mouth.

I would argue that Iowa has a very viable chance to battle it out with OSU, North Carolina State and Ohio State for 2nd, 3rd and 4th in MSG.

Iowa National Champions

2012 Matt McDonough
2013 Derek St. John
2014 Tony Ramos

Shared a Big Ten Title in 2015

Penn State National Champions

2011 Quentin Wright
2012 Frank Molinaro
2012 David Taylor (Two time Hodge Trophy Winner)
2012 Ed Ruth
2013 Quentin Wright
2013 Ed Ruth
2014 David Taylor
2014 Ed Ruth
2015 Matt Brown

Four National Team Titles from 2011-2014 (Strong position for a 5th title in 6 years)
Five Big Ten Titles in 6 yrs.

Except Cortez isn't wrestling in the first two classes, he's going at 141 next year. Jimmy heading down to 133.

If it works out that Cortez is at 141 lbs in two years, Suriano is likely the only current wrestler on scholarship in the first 2 weight classes.

,Cortez will have no problem maing 133 next year. He was wrestling 141 for heavier competition.

It's troof! He's got 21 Guns that say it's so!

Not sure what the hull's goin on here recently but this is yet even more pooh.

Relax...I agree with everything you said. But I respect the Iowa program and don't need to bash them. They are not at the same level as PSU, but they are still an elite wrestling program.
