Masanosuke Ono

Those 2 are giant meatheads. If it happens, all it does it prove the Broken Clock Theory.

Foreign wrestlers competing in NCAA colleges is not new -- in fact, it's going on right now with Lachlan McNeil at North Carolina (and he attended HS at Wyoming Seminary). What would be new is their status in international freestyle at the time they came over.

I guess they never heard of Yojiro Uetake, three time Okie State national champion from 1964 - 1966 and Olympic gold medalist in 1964 and 1968.

This has been happening in BBall for decades. The NIL sounds like a hurdle.

That’s not completely accurate. Uetake was at Ok State in 1964 and won the gold medal for Japan the same year. He won 2 more NCAA titles after that along with one more Olympic gold medal.

Recruiting Ono would not be a precedent. Cael could just tell DT he’s copying the strategy of Ok State from half a century ago.

I’m sad this won’t happen.
I was looking forward to the guys at the Hawkeye report squawking on how cherry picking from other rosters is bad for the sport.

not sure if this is still the case (nor if it matters. just pertinent to the topic)

but for some bizarre ncaa logic, foreign students aren't (or weren't) allowed to make money via NIL
I do not think it is NCAA logic, but federal immigration laws.
A person on a student visa is not allowed to work in USA, their visa is issued so they can study. Also, camps would not be a "work around" for this the person on a student visa cannot have gainful employment while inside the USA.

Not quite sure this is 100% correct. We still have foreign TAs and research stipends in engineering and science.

So there is some work-around -- maybe tuition discount instead of cash. But it's still compensation for employment.

Right, but NIL is employment not the same as tuition discounts or room/board stipends.
With NIL the money I'd reported as income 1099s, etc. Tuition and stipends are not reported as such.

didn't ok state have a Russian on their team for a few years .. ~2011 or 12?

It's not that foreign atheletes in the US on F-1 student visas can't participate in NIL, it's that they can't be employed. Most NIL opportunities require some degree of labor, whether it's cutting a commercial for a used car lot, posting on Instagram, etc. But not every NIL opportunity necessitates student labor. A student could license his NIL to a company, and in the case of an athlete like Ono, there's plenty of existing photos, videos, etc., that compliance wouldn't be that difficult.

Things to consider:

My son is a student in Japan. He is allowed to work. Pay is not limited, but hours of work are. It may be the same here.

At the wrestling club social today, Casey was asked about Ono. He would not comment one way or another when asked if Ono might be joining the team. Casey did confirm that Ono was not enrolled. He is listed, as previously discussed, so he can gain access to NLWC practice facilities. Casey also said Ono was only going to be here another three months. Then again, that doesn't mean that he won't come back.

Bottom line, nothing definitive either way.

Someone asked Casey about Ono today at the PSWC social. Casey said he's been wrestling at the NLWC for the last month. He said it's been a real positive for the guys getting to train with him. He said M Ono reached out to them over a year ago about training at the NLWC, and they told him 'we'd love to have you here'. Casey also said after the Olympics everyone wanted him at their RTC. If someone from the social has more to add or any corrections, please chime in.

Bottom line - negotiations still ongoing and details to remain private. 👍

I got the same feeling form Casey at the social. He certainly did not rule out ONO ever competing for PSU. Certainly seems like there is a ton of mutual admiration and that NLWC will be in his corner on the 26th.
I thought it was interesting that an SI article regarding NIL for international students said this .....................

."Some of the nation’s most sophisticated collective management companies have been able to bypass the restrictions of F-1 student visas. One Penn State collective was able to passively license Canadian athletes’ NIL for billboards in their home country. While these endorsements require additional care and financial investment to ensure compliance with passive licensing principles, they can be helpful tools for collectives to attract and retain elite international talent.

Seems like we might already have some experience with international NIL.

The social was held at the Westgate Building, right? I'm certain that when Casey said "here" he was being literal -- Ono will only be in/around the Westgate building for another 3 months. He'll be at Rec Hall much longer.

Casey is tricky like that.

I will go on record saying the loss of Bo and Jax would be more than made up if we can get Ono.
You Dont Say The Big Lebowski GIF

Watching the Super Bowl and can't look it up now, but didn't PSU have a middleweight wrestler circa 1999 who was from one of the former Soviet Republics? Need a correction or some help with my memory. Thanks.
Marat Tomaev maybe? He was a very good wrestler. He was right in there with the Moore brothers. Had some kind of injury at the end of his career.

He was another Blair product, although that doesn’t mean he wasn’t from a different country.

Those raspberry cookies are to die for.

Casey is fun to listen to. I'm starting to get afraid as his daughter gets older he may bolt from the program and become Penn State's first women's coach.

Daughter First after his boys win their NCAA titles.
