Figured I would start a thread for this tournament.

Wondering where brackets may be posted and if live feed will be available?

Streaming is a availabke to Rokfin subscribers with a $10 PPV on the Illinois Matmen channel.

Another $10 PPV? I understand they have to make money too, but I hope every live feed will not carry an addition charge.

I think that is the Rokfin model. Rokfin is a platform for others to host their content, and each content hoster will decide about PPV for special event content. I suspect many/most will charge incremental to any standard subscription.

The National duals was great and we'll worth the extra 10 bucks. But in comparison shouldn't this be 5 at most?

This is a grassroots event put together in days to save the Midlands. There's no way they are making money on this, I think $10 is more than reasonable to help them offset the costs of assembling a staff of camerapeople and announcers for something like 8 mats.

They did a great job getting an event to replace Midlands so the kids could still have a chance to compete. But, in reality, I highly doubt the $10 is gonna help offset costs. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would imagine each school paid a fee upon entry. I also believe the announcers for collegiate duals volunteered (kudos to them). So, when you have people willing to volunteer to help offset costs, not sure you turn around and charge people who are already giving you money monthly. Kind of the opposite of pay it forward haha.

Let me be clear, I don't think tournament producers should take a loss of any kind. It just seems that every time we as patrons turn around, we have a new fee. Every website and app has its own subscription. Now we have to pay an addition ppv charge. Am I going to pay it to enjoy wrestling and support the cast and crew? Probably. That doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

Agree, if the feed works. If it goes Flostyle, then refunds should be given.

Rokfin costing more than Flo with a fraction if the content and worse technology.
That’s an interesting take. I was thinking earlier today that if each Rokfin event is going to cost more in PPV, then I’m not maintaining my annual subscription. I’ll buy a month when an event is occurring and cancel after that month.

But if they keep having one per month, you’re in for $20/month.

This is very similar to when they charge you for a tip before you get any service. You honestly have no idea whether or not it is reasonable until the event is complete.

Personally I feel like we are entering a dangerous area. We talk about expanding the sport and then make it even more exclusive. Only real diehards are going to continue buying these.
In fact, I'm out on this one. If the whole squad went maybe. Even then it seems the premiere matches don't happen often enough.
Tell me who is wrestling beforehand, figure out a way to end the ducking.

Track stream ppv’s used to be $30. $10 seems reasonable—especially when the content creator is making the money, not the network. But I agree that this could start adding up quickly if everyone jumps on board the ppv train. My guess is, things will even out when the tires are better kicked and the market gets more evened out.

Now that Ed is in as well as Mark, I think I’ll have to pay the price.

I too will pay $20 or maybe even $30 to watch some of these events. But then I’m not going to maintain my membership in the off-season months. I’m not going to pay for an annual subscription when everything I want to watch costs me extra beyond my annual subscription and takes place between November and March.

I pay for all of them. Honestly I am happy to. It wasnt that long ago you couldn't watch any of these events. I dont have cable or sat., I have Prime and every wrestling subscription. Works for me.
Each individual’s circumstance can differ, which is one reason (beyond personality) tolerances for different models differ. With family, I’m not substituting cable with a bunch of wrestling subscriptions. I’m at 2 as it is, not yet willing to add more.

Besides, I need my $10 to grab some beers to drink out back while the Property Lovers and Baking Championships marathons are playing on our TV.

Edmond Ruth.....not Ed Ruth :)

Isn't this what supply & demand is for? Charge what you think will work, if it doesn't work, then adjust.

What team besides Iowa is missing from the usual Midlands field?

As it stands now this tourney has only 5 top-5 wrestlers entered and 184 is the only weight with more than 1 top-10 wrestler. I know this event was put together at the last minute but this field doesn't entice me to put down $10 to watch.

It's especially bothersome because I believe the Midlands was set to be broadcast on the BTN. Now we have another event behind a double paywall.

Same. The problem Rokfin and Flo are facing is people are already feeling squeezed by all of their other streaming services and add-ons (Amazon, Netflix, YouTube TV, Apple TV, HBO, Disney, etc.). These are things I can't get rid of b/c my wife and kids use them. At some point, the average man needs to say enough is enough.

I don't have a problem with Rokfin adding an additional $20 for a quality PPV event like the Collegiate Duals. At the same time, I'm not going to be a year-round subscriber and I'll definitely be selective in my PPV buys.

Martin mentioned on Twitter the Collegiate Duals generated 3600 new subscribers and 7200 PPV purchases. When you whack that up between Rokfin and the 12 participating teams, I can't imagine anybody's bank account is swelling.

I would think 7200 or $720,000 for that event would be incentive enough to try again next year. If each school just got enough to pay their way it seems like a good idea, but I would think on these kind of numbers they did better than that. If teams at any level can get paid to go to an event that could really enhance any participating sport or content provider. I said it before and Ill say it again Martin is on to something with this. $RAE

If rokfin turns into a PPV vehicle, I will probably drop my subscription. Power to them in trying to figure out how to make more money, but I already don't buy PPV for ufc/others, so I don't think I will unless it's a really special event. I didn't buy this one, but I bought the duals because it was worth it then for me.
