2025 NCAA's - Match/PBP/discussions (merged)

If you want to start that, it can be said for the following in the finals:
125: Spratley
165: MM and Caliendo
174: Hamiti
197: Buchanan
HWT: Hendrickson

Like it or not, the transfer portal is here to stay. Teams will hate it when other teams are benefiting from it and love it when they are the beneficiaries. I prefer to take it for what it is, and refer to the athletes by the singlet they are wearing currently.
Big differences between the first 3 and the last 3. Spratley and Mesenbrink both left with 4 yrs of eligibility remaining. Caliendo left with 3 yrs remaining, and his head coach at ND State had left for a new job. They weren't mercenaries.

The transfers are what they are. I don't mind the freedom of movement for the athletes. Annual poaching is a poor long-term strategy for the teams.

To me this is the same as those who are bitching and moaning because "only two PSU guys outperformed their seeds". Well, duh. Of course that's true when 8 of your 10 guys are top 3 seeds and when 6 of them are top 2 seeds. It's kind of hard to outperform their seeds when they're at or very near the top of the mountain. You could have arbitrarily given each of them a 6, 7 or 8 seed and all 10 would have outperformed their seeds. It's also kind of like saying, so and so has only won 5 of his 20 games against top 5 opponents. Well, duh. That's true of basically every coach on the planet.
As a team, PSU performed 4 under their seeds, but 3 of those are Kerk, who was re-injured in the semis and defaulted to sixth. The other nine performed one below their seeds in total. Given the high seeds, I have no problem with the performance. Considering the high number of bonus points, they did more than ok.

Such an articulate and thoughtful young man. He will make a great coach one day if he chooses to go down that path. I loved this: "People want to see people scrap. They want to see people fight. But if it's like 1-1 and we're just gonna' stand there, that kind of really just wants to make me puke. I don't want to watch that." : )

Or .... it was all part of the WWE show that ESPN was complicit in. I keep hoping my distaste with the last match will go away, but the stink remains. It was just contrived and ridiculous.
I can understand why you feel that way and I sure hope you are wrong. I like to think that the NCAA is above arranging for fixed athletic contests just to boost the number of spectators, but with all the corruption currently being exposed in our country, I suppose just about anything is possible.

And he did. An NCAA wrestler taking a bag to throw a match. Gable wrestled in a way I've never seen him wrestle going back to 2016. Even in his loses to Cassar he didn't just stop wrestling like he did last night.
I agree. After the 1st TD he thought it was wrapped up, seemingly

I’d love to sit down and chat with MM to hear his thoughts on different topics. He’s a different breed of wrestler all the way around. We need more just like him.

If you enjoyed those clowns constantly shouting over eachother compared to Shane and Trent, I really don't know what to tell you. If I was a new or casual fan, I would have switched the TV to the Food Network.
I only listened for a few seconds before I muted the TV. I prefer more nuance and articulate presentation of the action on the mat. I also hate to listen to people scream over each other.

"Guys finishing third, there's a lot of honor in that." I love that statement from Cael.

So true. It used to be that not even the entirety of each match in the finals were shown. The available coverage we have now is awesome.
Very true. For example, you can't find any of the finals matches from former Penn State greats like Jeff Prescott, Abe, or Scott Lynch. It's a real shame!

My two cents: the pre-match stuff was contrived, hyping the bout for tv. The bout itself was not.

A friend of mine has direct connection to OU. Buchanan was originally offered $350K and turned it down. When the offer was upped to $500K, he was going to turn that down as well. At that point, Teyon Ware stepped in and let him know there would be no hard feelings.

When I was in college, the only TV coverage was by ABC and it would usually be a few weeks before they would show bits and pieces on their Wide World of Sports series. The only time I remember them showing an entire match from start to finish was when Owings beat Gable. That video is posted on YouTube.

It's clearly 1 or 2 too many guys, and I'd hate to see Rock get tossed overboard.

Burroughs brings the least of the color commentators. Maybe they can make him the sideline reporterette and ditch Kessenich.
They should go to Hidlay for the sideline stuff. Kessenich's schtick is old news now. Rock is supposed to be the Gene Steratore in there and mostly wrong about calls and he's yesrs out of the game and none of us knew him from before.

Not a horrible thing that HWT was last, but not for the reason that ESPN assumed. I don't hate Steveson, but I am sick and tired of the him being pronounced as the greatest wrestler of all time for the last several weeks. He's now won TWO national titles. LOTS of people have won TWO national championships (it's a big accomplishment, I'm not suggesting that it isn't). So glad that Hendrickson won that match.

And regarding the Hodge, if Carter doesn't at least get part of it, something is wrong with the system. I'd probably be OK with them both winning given the circumstance, but no way should Carter NOT win it (or at least a part of it).
How ironic that Gable was humbled by Cassar going for his 1st Natty, then humbled by Hendrickson going for # 3. Karma for sure! Loved Wyatt's referring to David vs Goliath. It truly was!

It’s a season award and I don’t know the exact numbers, but Wyatt is undefeated with insane bonus and a win over a 2x champ that was undefeated in his last 3 years of wrestling…I wouldn’t be surprised to see Carter (and I hope it is), but by the Hodges intent and definition, I think it’ll be Wyatt.
If Spencer and Gable can share it, why not Carter and Wyatt?

"Guys finishing third, there's a lot of honor in that." I love that statement by Cael. Having five of our wrestlers finishing third and one finishing fifth is a great testament to the coaching staff. The backside run of the team was so impressive!
That was my favorite part of the entire tournament. All the guys who had their title dreams broken fought back in the consis. And scored tons of bonus along the way. 8 of the 9 who wrestled on Saturday ended their year with a win.

Starocci and MM trolled Ferrari by standing right in front of him during the 197 final.

I thought we were going to see a rumble between, initially, Marinelli (sitting just to the left of Carter in that pic) and Carter. They were both coaching from that corner. Marinelli yelled something directly behind Carter and Carter gave him the "get the f*** away from me" look. Then Mitch showed up. Then Kennedy. Then Levi. Then Teemer and the little dude who acts like the Hawkeye hype man at their duals. Was kind of funny, actually. Thought it could turn into a full fledged turf war! If I could post a video, I recorded some of it while watching the match!

Also, @amattaro, looks like you had some good seats! ;-)

Haha yeah, I saw Carter look back and give that “sit the f down, boy” look to Marinelli.

Seats were great. Tell Mason I said thanks!!!

Correct me if I am mistaken, but no freshman won their 1st, no sophomore won their second and no junior won their 3rd. So there is currently no one enrolled on their way to possibly a 4th title at this time; any such contender has to win their first as a freshman next year.

Record on Saturday 16-2.
To Thursday’s sessions I wore my NLWC sweatshirt. The team went 20-0. On Friday, I wore my Penn State Wrestling sweatshirt and we suffered a few tough losses. On Saturday I reverted to my NLWC sweatshirt and the team’s good fortune returned. Now I’m not saying the team’s results were a direct result of my wardrobe choices but I’m now going to wear that NLWC every time the team wrestles. Not that they need my help, but I’m not one who wants to leave things to chance.

With some time to reflect, the kids were firing on all cylinders for the whole tourney excepting Friday morning.

I can only think too much food after Thursday a.m. weigh-ins resulted in some cut problems late Thursday night?

Luke clearly was NC caliber and just missed. The one match that seemed to defy explanation was Kasak completely gassing by the second period Friday morning. So uncharacteristic. Having 4 champs with LL and Kasak would have been perfection, but we were nearly there.

Has anyone heard an interview with any focused questions on the uncharacteristic Friday morning? No doubt Cael will assess and make a small adjustment, otherwise we get an "A" for the weekend, what a finish!

2 things stuck out to me:

1. I'd love to know what spread was on the table in the back.

2. My college dorm room thought that locker room was cramped. (And understandably, given the logistics of this tournament.) For whatever talk of investing in facilities at various programs -- and obviously you want good facilities for year-round training -- when everything is on the line, that's the facility they get.

Now this doesn't fit some narrative...

That conversation......

DT - Hey Cody, what do you say you and that brother of yours retire so I can win one of them Team Trophies. And take that Casey guy with you.

Cody - David, the closest you'll get to That trophy was when you held it wearing a blue and white singlet. The Athletics Media Department has pictures of you holding one if you want me to send you one. Give me your address and Gilmans while your at it. I owe him a Christmas card and he left no forwarding address. Also David, you make $1,000,000 and although you're in the 37% tax bracket you can afford new shoes.

PS That coaches chair that some thought you had in Rec Hall, Nick Lee had it upholstered and the new drapes in his office are modest but cool. Congratulations on being the new king of Midwest wrestling.

Wells Fargo arena is pretty tight relative to similar-sized venues and that includes the tunnels. Given the tournament structure and size and tight schedule, I'm not sure how much better it could be done, and these spaces were in line with past years in other arenas. Other teams had appropriately smaller spaces. The spaces were typically occupied by an air mattress or two, each team separated by curtains. There are warmup spaces set aside as well, and they occupy as much space as the "locker rooms."

BTW - what happened to Iowa State? They really dropped off the radar. After last year's 4th place finish, I thought they were gradually making a comeback but they dropped to #27 this year and I don't think they had any AA's. Hopefully this is just one down year for them.

One other interesting tidbit. Take a look at the team picture on the PSU Wrestling page. Is that Ono standing next to Josh Barr wearing the PSU National Champions tee shirt?

a few more questions about 4 or 5 times a guy would get a TD and the ref would call time or stalemate what's up with that> and more than a few times guys on top were clearly riding and still on the mat and the refs would call out of bounds!!

That brings up one aspect of Iowa that appeals to recruits: they will do absolutely crazy things to show their support. Drove 11 hrs to shovel snow at Bassett's house. Drove 13 hrs for Zain's cadet world champ parade, knowing they could only waive to him. Etc.

I don't think that affected Bassett much -- sounded like he had his mind set on Iowa anyway. But as a recruit, you do want a coach who will do anything to help you succeed. And Brands dials that up to 11.

OTOH, they also do a lot of dumb things like not calling Brooks, having Telford initiate with Knox, M* no-showing at Wyoming Seminary, etc. But next year's recruits aren't going to remember those things, just what they see for themselves.
Nice Spinal Tap reference.
