2025 NCAA's - Match/PBP/discussions (merged)

Everyone knows how it works the donors aren't just contacting guys they want. I know most won't like this because it kills all the jokes.Coaches at all NIL programs are in contact with the donors and then the donor makes the contact. Wrestling coaches control the programs donors write checks.
It verifies the jokes, not kills them. But thank you for your service.

ESPN definitely cares about the sport. They were broadcasting it when no one wanted to watch it years ago. And ever since doing so have only brought the sport more into the spotlight. Why would they not bring in someone like Cormier, who has a wrestling background, who has made a big name for himself, and has never stopped promoting the sport of wrestling even with the UFC fame. And Burroughs, only one of the most successful USA wrestlers in this country's history. And what drama was introduced by them? It sounded like they were some super excited and knowledgeable fans commentating on the match as they watched it.
They only care about ratings. They either push wrestling or some to get people to watch ESPN over the Basketball Tournament. It’s either push wrestling or out bid everyone for the TV rights to Basketball.

And he did. An NCAA wrestler taking a bag to throw a match. Gable wrestled in a way I've never seen him wrestle going back to 2016. Even in his loses to Cassar he didn't just stop wrestling like he did last night.
But we've seen Gable lose before. Twice even.

Wrestled at OKST. I don't think any of his kids have gone to Nebraska (could be wrong about that, though Nebraska mostly recruits closer to home). But he's probably friends with Burroughs and wasn't going to contradict any of Burroughs' slobbering over his alma mater.
One if you want to count Ty Eise who transferred to Gilroy this year.

Spelling in slushhead post Cornier, get it.

I missed his transfer, thought he was from Colorado which is in Nebraska's natural recruiting territory.

Appreciate the update. Always good to have better info.

I think Gable’s little chirp towards Hendrickson at the beginning of the match might have helped to give him the mental determination to go all out for the win. Never give your opponent an advantage, especially when it comes down to extra motivation.
Or .... it was all part of the WWE show that ESPN was complicit in. I keep hoping my distaste with the last match will go away, but the stink remains. It was just contrived and ridiculous.

I actually liked the referees panel decision if still tied after overtime with no sudden death nonsense. Face it, unless fan glasses are involved, it's usually pretty clear which which wrestler was wrestling better (i.e. not stalling, etc.).
Here is one problem with that. There is already a shortage of referees. Unless the panel of 3 is made up of non refs. I still question the potential for bias.

I felt the same way immediately. All of the pieces / elements are there ... Gable w/ WWE background, his antics upon Wyatt entering, Wyatt's background, the need / desire to put that match last, Trump w/ Wyatt and "Captain America" (this isn't a political comment, just the observation).

It's right from WWE / Disney / Hollywood. (Like a Rocky movie ... you know, even Philadelphia as the setting).

They’re trying to “grow the sport” in my opinion that’s just stupid. Certain sports viewership is declined over the years, I’m not sure about the NFL numbers, but there’s a certain amount of people that watch stuff. And you are not getting casual fans to come in to watch an Olympic sport like wrestling.

Ever talk to a non-wrestling fan? Ever try to explain to him scoring? Now try to explain a tournament like this to them and watch them feel like they’re in math class.

Put a good product out in the Matt, have sold announcers. Explain it, and stop the stupid hype. ESPN is probably done more to ruin sports and actually make them better.

Folk needs to do something about their Officiating and the ridiculous way they call and, more particularly, DON'T CALL passivity and stalling. Mat Officials inject themselves every bit as much as the broadcasters by literary rewarding stalling strategies with some wrestlers for the entire match and then in some matches completely changing their criteria for stalling within the same match and make ridiculous calls at the end. It's absurd and Folk wrestling will not become more popular until "action" is rewarded to the CORRECT wrestler in the form of points and wins.

One Official yesterday, literally said "we need action" the entire time wrestlers were on their feet - this is supposedly done to create more action by creating fear in the more passive wrestler their going to be called for stalling. This has the effect of "the boy who called wolf" when you do it on a constant basis and the wrestlers simply tune you out. If you're saying "I need action" repeatedly the entire time, there is stalling going on and your warnings are clearly being ignored.

Folk needs to make "stall warnings" verbal (i.e., red, you need offensive activity now) - and if the Official proceeds to call Stalling by raising his fist, it should be a point. Folk also needs to create a rule that if one wrestler makes three consecutive attacks and the other wrestler stalemates all three attacks, it's an automatic point for the aggressor.

I had Ohio State guys behind me whining and calling for stalling point against Beau when he was pushing Mendez out of bounds in the ride-outs, only to completely shut up when Mendez did the same thing ... It was so funny ...

And I'd have no problem if the refs would call stalling in that situation, just has to be the same ..

1) How would this be different from the legendary “Max Dean just showed up?” line you guys parrot all the time? Is Cael not in control of his program?

Also incredibly naive to take that statement at face value. Saying otherwise would be a recruiting violation.

2) Anybody gonna comment on Buchanan’s interview where he said he didn’t actually love wrestling until he got to Iowa and Brands instilled such a passion for him that now he’s going to keep competing?
Not saying you’re wrong, you’re not, in that coaches have this line they must use when it comes to awareness re: tampering.

I do think Cael can get a benefit of the doubt on Max when he lost a year of wrestling already, which clearly put him on edge, and then Cael had a placer returning. One thing if Buchanon came when Jacob Warner was already in house, but another when you realize that they have no 197 sans Buchanon (and don’t give me Glazier).

At that point, Beard could well have been the better 197 in the first place.

And Iowa closed the gap, lost by less than 100 this year! 🤪
Yes, but what happened was a massive influx of portal wrestlers between OK State and Iowa. So, in all reality, the margin may have been even bigger this year, and probably was. Put those portal wrestlers on their original teams and it's an absolute massacre.

Next year I'm expecting 11AA's or I'm going to complain about the direction we are headed.

To me this is the same as those who are bitching and moaning because "only two PSU guys outperformed their seeds". Well, duh. Of course that's true when 8 of your 10 guys are top 3 seeds and when 6 of them are top 2 seeds. It's kind of hard to outperform their seeds when they're at or very near the top of the mountain. You could have arbitrarily given each of them a 6, 7 or 8 seed and all 10 would have outperformed their seeds. It's also kind of like saying, so and so has only won 5 of his 20 games against top 5 opponents. Well, duh. That's true of basically every coach on the planet.

So many times, the Hodge has been given more so as career achievement than for what it’s supposed to be. Based on past precedent many times like this, Carter should get it. But have doubts he will, just because….
Body of work was one of the criteria until 2022. Before that it was:

Formerly, the trophy was awarded based on seven criteria:

  1. Record
  2. Number of pins
  3. Dominance
  4. Past credentials
  5. Quality of competition
  6. Sportsmanship/Citizenship
  7. Heart

I also didn’t like the immediate back patting the ESPN crew gave themselves following the match

Correct me if I am mistaken, but no freshman won their 1st, no sophomore won their second and no junior won their 3rd. So there is currently no one enrolled on their way to possibly a 4th title at this time; any such contender has to win their first as a freshman next year.

Some thoughts:

What a great tournament with multiple storylines at every weight. The NCAA doesn't do a good enough job at promoting those storylines, especially in the finals. You would think ESPN would try to do that since they have the TV rights. Same could be said for JB and DC, but by the time they get on the air to commentate the finals, its too late to hype up the current matches. I would love to see the UFC step in and do some promoting. After all, college wrestling (not just D1) is probably their biggest feeder program. I know thats not the UFC's job, and them paying for that is highly unlikey, but in my eyes, that would be the easiest and quickest way to get eyes and recognition on our sport.

Not sure I liked the match order but I understood it, and in hindsight, HWT was probably the main event as far as excitement goes. ESPN and NCAA needed a match to get people to watch at 7, and hold their eyes, and attendance until the end. The two biggest storylines that non wrestling fans could relate to were at 184 and HWT. Therefore I understood it, but I would have started at 285 and ran straight through. Less confusion for the casual fan, and you still end with a PSU/IOWA which is the biggest rivalry in college wrestling.

I wanna run through the story lines:
125 - A non powerhouse school NC State Wolfpack Vince Robinson (no disrespect to NCState, but not known for being a "top dog" in NCAA Wrestling) vs The Olympic Gold Medalist's first NCAA Finalist Troy Spratley. Both guys first time in the finals. The freshman never won a state title, and the sophomore started his career at a different school. Pat Pop has been a mainstay at the program and a well known coach and one blew up the wrestling world when we uprooted from a program many thought he would take over. The winner? The 0x state champ Vince Robinson

133 - Like them or not, Iowa is great for the sport of wrestling. Two guys who have seen each other multiple times this year with I believe the series was tied at 1-1. The last time the two met? A first period fall by Byrd, who again attends a lesser known program at Illinois. The Hawkeye looking for revenge not only against Byrd from earlier this year, but winning after losing in the finals last year. The ending? The Fighting Illini keeps the Hawkeye from getting his first NC.

141 - A rematch of the meme. Brock Hardy wrestling for the school who far exceeded expectations, and Jesse Mendez who's team came up well short of expectations. A rematch of the big ten semi finals where there were 17 points put on the board. Will there be another meme? No, but they end up putting 21 points on the board. The results flip from 2 weeks ago, and the Buckeye is now a 2X NC.

149 - A 2X Finalist 1X champ Caleb Henson vs a 1X finalist Ridge Lovett. A lesser known school, Virginia Tech, vs the school wrestling out of their minds Nebraska. Ridge Lovett's last chance at a championship vs Caleb Henson, who can be a 4xer. The result? The Husker gets his first championship and denies The Hokie his 2nd in as many tries.

157 - Where did these guys come from? The lowest seeded guy to make the finals at 8 Joey Blaze. The Boilermaker, vs the third straight Nebraska Husker in a row Antrell Taylor. Murderer's Row for the NCAA Wrestling tournament. The Result? The Husker makes it 2-3 to continue the incredible run of Nebraska and ends the "Cinderella Story" of the 8 seed Joey Blaze.

165 - PSU vs Iowa does anything else need to be said. The Team Champion Nittany Lion's Mitchell Messenbrink vs the Iowa Hawkeye Michael Caliendo. Messenbrink the only guy to beat Caliendo this year, and I believe last. Messenbrink with only 1 loss on his record which came in the NCAA Finals last year. Caliendo looks to close the gap even further after giving Messenbrink his closest match just 2 weeks ago. The result? The Nittany Lion gets his first NC and tops the Hawkeye.

174 - The Missouri Tiger main stay. A national champion and multiple time finalst Keegan O Toole looking for his second. The once Wisconsin Badger now Oklahoma St Cowboy Dean Hamiti looks to give David Taylor his first national champion in his first trip to the finals. The Result? Dean Hamiti gives himself as a wrestler his first national champion and David Taylor his first as a head coach.

184 - The Nittany Lion who is a 4x NCAA Champion Carter Starocci. Carter going for his 5th would be the first, only, and last 5xer. He's moving up a weight class to face the 2024 champion at the weight. The University of Northern Iowa Panther's Parker Keckeisen. Keckeisen not only won the weight, but bonused his way through the tournament last year. The result? History is completed, Starocci is a 5xer.

197 - PSU vs Iowa, again. The Lion looks to flip the result against the Hawkeye from their dual. Is the Lion, who had to medically forfeit out of his conference tournament, healthy enough to top the Hawkeye. Buchanan's only loss on the season was the guy Josh Barr had to beat to reach the finals. The result? The Hawkeye's get their first national champion of the night, denying Penn State going 3-3.

285 - The US Air Force Second Lieutenant, who took his talents to Oklahoma State for his final year of eligibility is looking for his first National Champioinship. Gable Stephenson the Minnesota Gopher, Olympic Gold Medalist, former WWE Wrestler, former defensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills, comes back after exploring all other options to gain his third NC. The immovable force vs the unstoppable object. The Result? The Second Lieutenant gets a takedown with 15 seconds left to do what many thought was impossible and dethrone Gable.

The Team Champions? The Penn State Nittany Lions who set an all time tournament record scoring 177 points and outscoring the Nebraska Huskers who took second place with 117 points. The two other teams to earn a trophy were the Oklahoma State Cowboys with 102.5 points, and the Iowa Hawkeyes with 81 points. Penn State breaks their own scoring record that they set just last year.

When you take a step back and really dive into it, that is how to promote our sport. It's far bigger than it seems on the surface. If I put that in front of most people without the results listed, they would be interested. I feel they would want to tune in to see how it ends. If you get someone who is familiar with wrestling and not a follower, you could fill them in on all the former champs and all americans that didn't place, or worse than that, went 0-2.

Now, back to business. Congrats to the 2024-2025 Penn State Nittany Lions on the National Championship. What a tournament! Already looking forward to next year and giving my 2 cents on the lineup next year when that thread gets started. Very rarely am I negative on here, actually this may be a first. But I want to see the betting odds on this years national champions either A. not reaching the finals again, or B. not being an all american next year. My money is on Antrell Taylor. I don't mean to be disrespectful or take away from his national championship. But there is just something about every one of his matches that rubbed me the wrong way.
That was not a Hawkeye thing at 197. That was a Slumlord Bob mercenary

If you want to start that, it can be said for the following in the finals:
125: Spratley
165: MM and Caliendo
174: Hamiti
197: Buchanan
HWT: Hendrickson

Like it or not, the transfer portal is here to stay. Teams will hate it when other teams are benefiting from it and love it when they are the beneficiaries. I prefer to take it for what it is, and refer to the athletes by the singlet they are wearing currently.

ESPN also took a national tournament that was grudgingly broadcast on one night with bare-bones production, and now airs it on 3 nights of primetime, including 2 weekend nights. Competing directly against the NCAA Basketball Tournament in all 3 nights. Plus provides live streaming of all mats in all 6 sessions.

That's a massive benefit to the sport, and hardly ruination. Far greater effect than any choice of announcer.
So true. It used to be that not even the entirety of each match in the finals were shown. The available coverage we have now is awesome.

Should we be worried that we only have 128 points returning next year?🤣
To have four guys who placed second or third be within two points of the scoring for a national champion with no bonus points is so impressive. Also, absent Greg's injury Penn State would have had every wrestler score at least 13 points in the tournament. That is one talented team top to bottom.

Big differences between the first 3 and the last 3. Spratley and Mesenbrink both left with 4 yrs of eligibility remaining. Caliendo left with 3 yrs remaining, and his head coach at ND State had left for a new job. They weren't mercenaries.

The transfers are what they are. I don't mind the freedom of movement for the athletes. Annual poaching is a poor long-term strategy for the teams.

As a team, PSU performed 4 under their seeds, but 3 of those are Kerk, who was re-injured in the semis and defaulted to sixth. The other nine performed one below their seeds in total. Given the high seeds, I have no problem with the performance. Considering the high number of bonus points, they did more than ok.
