Wanted to get some opinions from the all-knowing board. I just watched the 2nd half of the Purdue game (had to be away from TV and could only listen on radio yesterday). One thing that stuck out was one of the announcers saying that McSorely had to do better with his completion % to be successful - as we're in the midst of putting up 62 points.
This got me wondering, do you really think he needs to? Of course you want your QB to have a completion percentage around 60 or better. Currently, McSorely is ranked 100th in college with a percentage of 55%. For comparison, Luke Falk of Washington State leads the league with 72%. Perry Hills of Maryland is 15th with 66%. Nate Peterman of Pitt is 34th with 62%. CJ Beathard of Iowa is 69th with 58%.
The thing that strikes me about McSorely is that he makes passes that are almost entirely catchable for his receiver or nobody. He's thrown 3 picks on the year, but none since Michigan. He's almost hit 2000 yards already. His yards per pass average is 8.15. Sometimes I feel like his overthrows are because the receiver hasn't gained enough separation and he wants to put it in a spot where ONLY the PSU receiver can get it. If the receiver can't, the DB definitely won't.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? Obviously I'm not complaining about McSorely's play. We're winning and just dropped 62 points - he's doing something very right. Is the completion percentage an overrated stat?
Also side factoid for you: Did you know his real name is Richard Thomas McSorely? I didn't.
