Mental Help Needed at PSU

We've become a nation of wusses.
Am I allowed to say that?
And wusses make excuses. Thank you Spencer Lee!

For me it’s all about work ethic and discipline. Put the work in, do the right thing, and make good choices. You can still have some fun while in college but the reason you are there is to learn and become a decent member of society.

It’s crazy nowadays. In order to distinguish yourself, kids have to like rehabilitate endangered rhinos or tutor lepers. In the 80s, it was grades and typical extracurriculars like sports or whatever - no one volunteered for shit

True story: my classmate Dave put down 1.5 pitchers on the Cafe 210 patio, the afternoon of his Speech Comm final speech.

When he entered the room, he kicked every chair on the way past and left a vapor trail of stale beer in his wake.

When it was his turn to speak. kicked every chair + vapor trail. Was OK for the first minute or so, until he lost his place on the 3x5 cards. Stumbled thru the rest of the speech, then kicked every chair + vapor trail on the way back.

Prof: "Dave, that was by far your best speech all semester. I have no choice but to give you an A." ("No choice," lol.)

Meanwhile the girls who took the class seriously got B+. They were PISSED.
I remember that! It was my only "A"!

I'm more concerned about the day the cath needs to come out.
Yes, I clearly need to rethink my entire plan.

I disagree with the conclusion reached in the article. It’s not just a PSU issue, or a collegiate issue: it’s a national issue. And it was before COVID. Want to decrease suicide, murder, drug use, alcohol abuse, and many other things that destroy our families and society? More, better mental healthcare.

You could solve most of the issues above with more religion & families staying together vs the current insane divorce rates. But of course it’s easier to blame other things like Covid, stress & lack of sufficient mental health.

Oh, boy .... Not everything fits so neatly into your little f*cking boxes.

I grew up in the 80s. PSU grad, late 90s.
I wish my parents got divorced - my dad was a bi-polar menace for 35 years & still screams at my mom.
The Catholic priest at my K-6 grade school was later found to be fondling altar boys.

What other simpleton answers do you have for the group??

I'm sorry to hear that digger. That's terrible.

Thanks for the memories.

I do not know how you can determine if mental healthcare is better or not. I know that personally, when I am busy all day, I feel better about t things and when I have a ton of free time - my mind starts to get overactive and my stress level grows.

It is hard to pin the reason on 1 thing, but the fact that kids are so overstimulated and spoiled and entitled probably contribute more to a weakened ability to deal with stress and the decision to just give up rather than push thru.

I did the absolute minimum possible work when I was at PSU. I graduated in 4 years with a sub optimal GPA. No employer has ever cared about my GPA though. Here I am, 41 with a good job with my student debt paid off.

High school and college is far different now. It's way harder to get into schools and college seems far more difficult now. I'm glad I went to college when I did.
Harder to get into schools - are you kidding? They are begging for students. They are waving ACT scores at all kinds of universities. You may not be getting into Stanford, but there are plenty of schools that will take the average student.

That is a sad story, but I think most divorces are not overdue or justified (like your mother's seems to have been), but rather just easier than working thru things. I am guessing he was referring to the people who give up too quickly.

There is a lot of happiness to be found in marriage after working thru your problems. A lot of peopled not want to do the work. What does that teach the kids?

Regardless of whether I agree with the original quote or not but personal anecdotes are not counter to statistical norms.

Okay, I have to take advantage of this story to go on a tangent. Back when I was in 8th grade, just before school a couple of my fellow classmates decided to chug a bottle of whiskey. The booze really kicked in by the time home room was over and they were falling out in our first period class. So, the guys were escorted down to the principal's office. As was told to me later, as the principal was outside his office having the secretary call the parents, one of them puked all over the principal's desk and then started using all the papers on the desk to try and wipe/cover it up. They ended up with fairly long suspensions. Needless to say, they are less than productive members of society today.

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

Socrates 390 B.C.

"The world is passing through troublous times. The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress."

(From a sermon preached by Peter the Hermit in A.D. 1274)

Yep, it has been discussed before - lol

Whatever the current generation does, I'm good with. We've left them a world that is essentially hopeless. If they spend the rest of their lives pursuing wine, women and song, who can blame them? That's what I intend to do

Cheers - it's everyone fault except their own. Those poor children / young adults.

There are rotten eggs in EVERY basket. Let's throw out all of the eggs because your dad was a jerk & the priest was a rapist. Talk about over simplification.

Yes, I was in the middle of research about global warming. And yes, we are done.
I was feeling snarky and wrote that. I knew I shouldn't be so negative, but if you read the facts, you'd be pretty negative too. I've got a great-grandson. His future looks bleak.

Coug;
It's a rite of passage. Every generation fears for the next, and the next is greater than the last.
What I see at my age as laziness and entitlement from millennials is actually a high level of intelligence and uncanny ability to look at a process and simplify it. I just won't tell them that.
The future has never been brighter. These kids care more about the planet and their fellow man than we ever did. With the technology at their disposal, they will do great things. Just not the way we would do them, Which is a good thing.
