Michigan asks victims of sexual assault to come forward day after criminal investigation ended

Ex-wrestler goes public with UM abuse allegations: 'I will not be ignored again'

"
Again, I was sent to Dr. Anderson who examined the elbow and continued with his penis, hernia and prostate checks," he wrote. "I found it strange that I needed a penis and hernia check ... plus a rubber glove check for when my elbow had dislocated, but I never really gave it much thought."

Deluca said he talked with a football player who lived near him.

"Somehow, the football player started talking about Dr. 'Drop Your Drawers' Anderson," Deluca wrote. "To put it mildly, I was shocked. The football player related how he went in for something like a badly bruised shoulder and got 'the glove.' AKA, prostate exam."

When his elbow began dislocating during the season, officials in the athletic training department taped his elbow but his left hand was "swollen like a red balloon" because of the taping. He was told to go see Anderson.

"No way was that going to happen," Deluca wrote. "I didn't go back to see Dr. Anderson and I quit getting my arm taped and therefore spent the rest of the wrestling season trying to keep my elbow from dislocating."

After the season ended, he went home for the summer and Johannesen sent him a letter that referenced him "wasting" his junior year. The letter was even sent to his high school wrestling coach.

Deluca was mad, and wrote back an angry letter, leaving little out.

"I mentioned my elbow dislocating," he wrote. "The bed wetting. The trouble sleeping I was having. I mentioned Dr. Drop Your Drawers Anderson in that letter."

The coach took away his scholarship and removed him from the team.

Canham is deceased.

Deluca told police that he had to hire a lawyer to get his scholarship back, though he did not return to the wrestling squad.

From press conference:

The UM athletic secretary tried to pressure his roommates (who were also on the team) to move out and get away from him after he reported the abuse.

I’m thinking one will be able to see the smoke plume out of ann arbor from space. Perhaps NASA will obtain images.

Are any national media outlets covering this or are only the Detroit media outlets concerned at this point?

Former U-M wrestler: I blew whistle on U-M doctor in 1975, was dismissed from team
David Jesse, Detroit Free PressPublished 11:15 a.m. ET Feb. 27, 2020 | Updated 11:37 a.m. ET Feb. 27, 2020

That was it for Deluca, who had a shoulder that kept dislocating and knew every time he went to the doctor he would get an unnecessary rectal exam and testicular exam.

"That was it. I was done," he said.

So Deluca blew the whistle — writing a letter to his coach at the time, Bill Johannesen and then-athletic director Don Canham. The nine-page letter outlined the abuse.

"Something is wrong with Dr. Anderson," the letter reads. "Regardless what you go in there for, Dr. Anderson makes you drop your drawers."

The coach and athletic director then threw Deluca off the team, he said during a news conference Thursday in Southfield with his lawyer, Parker Stinar, and two other former wrestlers who are accusing Anderson of sexual assault.

Stinar declined to comment on whether his clients had met or talked with investigators. No lawsuit has been filed by them, but meetings are scheduled with university officials, Stinar said.

He said the clients have a simple goal: They want U-M to "accept accountability for knowing for decades" and not doing anything.

UM will apologize, saying that those who complained 50 years ago should also come forward again. "Sorry for the misunderstanding. Now that the police investigation has ended, and nothing can be done anyway, please come forward as quickly as you can."

Sadly, this will be a big NOTHING. BURGER. for the media since it happened a long time ago and since the people instrumental in an actual cover-up are dead and weren’t that important (i.e., not Joe).

^^ Michigan's response to an athlete's complaint about getting molested by Dr. Robert Anderson is rather depressing.

We have an over hyped pandemic now and Orange msn is bad. No one cares about this stuff anymore.
Maybe a school shooting or a fake hate crime will grab some headlines , but this is so 8-9 years ago.

We haven't covered this on the board. A multi year captain of the Michigan basketball team crashed the AD's wife's car into a telephone pole at 3am. He gave a fake name to officers, but they eventually figured it out. Of course he wasn't given a breathylyzer on the scene, though another article says “Officers noticed Simpson stumbling when entering the car". He got a one game suspension.

Another "glitch" in the system the Ann Arbor police use when it comes to reporting on things involving Michigan. What are the odds, right?

Michigan's Zavier Simpson crashed car belonging to Warde Manuel's wife before suspension

Michigan basketball's senior point guard crashed the car of the athletic director's wife right before his suspension last week.

Zavier Simpson was given a civil infraction Wednesday for speeding too fast for conditions on Jan. 26, Ann Arbor police Sgt. Bill Clock said.

The 22-year-old from Ohio suffered a 62-64 loss to Illinois hours before police were called to a vehicle crashed at Hill Street and South Forest Avenue in Ann Arbor.

Police found a vehicle crashed into a pole, possibly a sign for a bike lane, in the early morning hours about 3 a.m..

They found the car with no driver, but Simpson and another person walked up.

Simpson initially gave a false name and denied involvement in the crash.

“They figured it out – didn’t take long,” Clock said of Simpson’s identity.

Police tracked down the owner of the vehicle, Chrislan Manuel, who is married to Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel.

Officers were able to determine through Chrislan Manuel and her son, Evan Manuel, that Simpson was the driver.

Evan Manuel is a student manager for the basketball team.

Simpson did not smell of intoxicants, Clock said. The student-athlete told police the car slipped on ice before striking the pole. The car was towed from the scene.

The crash initially was listed as a hit-and-run incident, Clock said.

Though civil infractions are normally handed out a bit more quickly, the need to verify Simpson as the driver slowed the investigation.

In addition, a patrol sergeant sent the report back to the responding officer for an update, a glitch in the system delivered it slowly and the officer had days off in-between.

The basketball team announced the one-game suspension of their multi-year captain for violating team policies on Jan. 27.

In a statement at the time, Michigan coach Juwan Howard said the matter would be handled appropriately within the program.

"While we are disappointed with what has transpired with Zavier, we know there are always lessons to learn and grow from," he said, according to the statement. "We take these matters and consequences very seriously."

Simpson played his first game after the suspension on Feb. 1.

I recall it being discussed here. There was a thread about it. Nevertheless, a michigan scandal pile-on is always welcome and necessary.

Talking about the horrible culture of our football program. So concerned about the victims (2nd Mile Victims). Not a peep about all of the athletes who were victims right there on Michigan's campus when he was attending.

I don't use the word "hate" very often. But the anger I have inside of me for people like this probably isn't healthy.

How about this comment from a thread about Desmond's 2016 comments about Penn State:

Howard's constant comments give me this vibe that he maybe a victim of sexual abuse... He just never misses an opportunity to bring up Sandusky. At this point, it's freaky and obsessive.

He needs to direct his anger at his abuser.

Emphasis on @DesmondHoward saying the victims did not have a choice because of the football culture at Penn State.

My question is if Desmond had a choice when Dr. Handerson was fisting his a$$hole.
  • If the answer is yes, then hopefully his wife Rebkah Howard (@pink_funk) was aware of Desmond's lifestyle choices before they got married.
  • If not, then Desmond Howard himself was repeatedly victimized in the a$$hole because of Michigan's toxic football culture.
Can you imagine the conversations going on right now between former Michigan football players? I can see Desmond telling everyone that they can't let the place get torched like Penn State, so everyone just STFU and deny, deny, deny. Desmond will deny that he exchanged genital stimulation with Dr. Handerson but only his medical records can prove it.

I've made it a point not to comment at length about ongoing scandals at other Big10 schools (MSU, OSU, now UM), but I feel obligated to point out that what is alleged at U of M is EXACTLY what a cover up looks like.

Please contrast that with the "cover up" (which didn't occur, and was thrown out of court, but that everyone believes occurred) at PSU.
