Michigan dual thread - Feb 7

Kerk hit a side roll for a reversal and a 5 count that was rewarded with zero back points.
Elementary moves done to perfection work really well.

I wasn't telling you something you don't already know, I just chose your post to respond.
I was really just mocking the "junior high move" meme.

I’m not sure …. I’m certain that I’ve seen well over 150 matches at Rec/BJC, but, that reversal with just a few seconds left over a #2 has got to be in my top 8-10 …..EVER!

Cardenas’ whole thing is going low and waiting for his opponents to get bored with meeting him there and hitting his double. RBY has that in his arsenal too (but of course he has more).

I thought Josh wrestled a smart match overall but I also hope, as his confidence in his own stuff grows, he’ll find ways to get to his scoring more against the top guys and not just neutralize theirs. He definitely did more of that last night than against Buchanan, and I have faith he’s gonna get there.
This is Ferrari's entire shtick too.

Great practice for Josh, in case they meet at nationals.

I spent most of the night thinking that our guys, well the middle weights, looked lethargic. At the end I realized that we shut out Michigan 39-0 without giving up a takedown and realized that I am really spoiled.

As an aside, the addition of the blue & white computerized lights on the handrails was a nice touch.

I like this kid Barr a LOT. He trolled Cardenas and the sissy style modern officiating twice. First was when in the first period where he just tapped his fingers on Cardenas to show he could place no pressure on the guy and he still wouldn't shoot or even move. Even better at the end of the third ... Cardenas drops to one knee, AGAIN, and does NOTHING, which should be, you know, A STALL WARNING! Barr responds by waiting a moment and then going to both knees and just staring up at him! Hahahaha! That was so damn funny I thought it deserved its own thread

I wasn't listening to Byers but I bet he got a kick out of that.
I’m envisioning Cardenas wrestling AJ. The entire matchup will be wrestled on their knees.

Im thinking AJ is gonna come into the tournament at 2 or 3 which right now would match up with Barr. Not good.

Can anyone help me? I'm trying to find a complete list of all Penn State dual meets. Everything I pull up stops in the 1990's. I'm specifically interested in finding out when we wrestled Michigan as a non-conference opponent between 1981 - 1986. Date and score. Thanks to anyone who can find this!

Looks like we dualed them every year in that range:

Overall, I was impressed with Cardenas' quickness, conditioning and strength. Both he and Buchanan looked significantly bigger than Josh. I re-watched and studied the match this morning. Josh did open it up a little bit more than with Buchanan, but he still stayed fairly conservative on offense. Cardenas' speed and his ability to generate a shot from one or two knees had to be respected by Josh. In OT, Cardenas came close to hitting an ankle pick from his knees.

There were several exchanges where Josh was close to getting the angle, but Cardenas' quickness prevailed. And on one shot Josh got both hands on a leg, but Cardenas' strength was too much for Josh to finish the shot. Josh did a great job of gaining hand control to escape in regulation, but in OT he rushed to get to his feet without gaining that hand control. In the moment he might have felt that having just seven seconds to escape to avoid losing the RT advantage was too little to make sure he gained hand control before he got to his feet. I have noticed this a lot with wrestlers not working for bottom hand control in OT. What seems to happen is they end up being ridden for most or all of the 30 seconds as their opponent is able to take them out of bounds several times from their feet, chewing up the clock.

Overall, though, it was an awesome win for Josh. I think another year of adding good weight will really help him, especially against large 197 pounders like Buchanan, Cardenas and Ferrari. He is right there with them based on his matches against Buchanan and Cardenas. Ferrari is the wildcard of the group. It will be interesting to see how his very weak schedule this season affects his NCAA performance. Will his conditioning and wrestling be able to match the rest in the top four? Time will tell!

I was sooooo frustrated watching that match live. There was literally a half dozen times barr could have scored he just won't pull the trigger for some reason. I thought for sure he was going to lose in ride outs then he pulled it out. He needs to pull the trigger these close matches are going to bite him at the wrong time

Not sure I saw tons of openings..... Barr was too square to Cardenas in Neutral. Josh is still a somewhat undersized 97 - he has struggled the most in Neutral against the biggest 97's with length. I really don't think there is a whole lot more to it than that. Josh likes to initiate a lot of his offense from ties - large 97s with length, seem to be able to keep him at a distance where he can't get his offense off, including when their in ties.

Cael, Casey, and co. Have a lot of data from these last two matches to work with.
Hopefully they can fine tune enough for march.

Something really struck me while watching the PSU-Michigan dual on TV. I was super impressed with the crowd size and atmosphere.....it sounded loud, especially at key moments, and the lighting effects were amazing. With the help of nerf I was able to help patch together some of my fading memory. When I was at Penn State in the early 80's I remember attending a PSU-Michigan dual meet at Rec Hall on a week night in early December. The crowd was so sparse, I could pick and choose where I sat in the bleachers, not even close to another fan. Totally different atmosphere.

I know this is not an apples to apples comparison. That was a weeknight (surprised we had those even back then), non-conference dual, and I think we (students) were headed into finals, but the atmosphere was so subdued. That experience resurfaced in my memory when I saw the huge crowd Friday night. How the program has grown!

Big caveat, we wrestled Michigan on a weeknight in 12/82 and 12/83, and on a Saturday night in 2/85 and 2/86 and I'm sure those Saturday evening crowds were much larger (but I don't recall, even though I know I would have attended). Not to mention I remember many really packed, raucous Rec Hall crowds against our EWL league opponents and our marquee non-conference foes.

Just a random recollection from an old man ;)

Lot's of whinning here about the official but I give him props for the double stall call in Bartlet's bout. I miss the days when that was called more regularly and would love to see it used more often. Same official who called it in one of the All Star bouts this year at Rec Hall.

LOL about 5 other matches Mich should have been dinged for stalling and points ref just ignored it!

I have to say it was super quiet at times where you could even hear the background music playing on the speaker. When there was action it was loud for sure crowd was bigger than I thought it would be. I would say rec hall is a more Intimate experience where you feel closer to the action as opposed to bjc. Either way it's a blessing to watch PSU wrestling anywhere. I was there with two guys who never watched a wrestling match live so that was something

Lots of time for AJ to do something stupid and get kicked of the team.
At this point, even the retreating kneeler (where Angelo learned it) has figured out that NCAA NIL is his only shot at several high-income years. He’ll no doubt make it to March, possibly even Iowa City in the fall should the guy Bo hoodwinked slip their stalwart AD a bag, too.
The #1 seed should be from B1Gs even if Buchanan loses at Illinois to Josh or Cardenas, but I see the undefeated praying mantis getting it then. I also see the wrestling gods favoring any of the B1Gs top 3 over the fleeing roadrunner, even if he does manage to kneel his way to Friday night.
Pittsburgh guy rooting madly for Philly tonight, out.

According to the seeding math, Buchanan will be the 1 seed if he wins B10s. If Barr or Cardenas win B10s, then Ferrari will get the 1.

The seeding categories -- this assumes Barr or Cardenas:
- H2H (25%): none. 12.5 seeding pts each.
- Quality Wins (20%): Ferrari will definitely lose this. Just a matter of whether it's a 20-0 or 15-5 split. Ferrari does have a couple quality wins (as opposed to none), so let's call it 15-5.
- Coaches Rank (15%): Ferrari is currently #3 behind Buchanan and Cardenas. He'll be #1 here if still undefeated. 15-0 for Ferrari.
- Conference Finish (10%): Tie, 5-5.
- Common Opponent (10%): Barr and Ferrari both beat Little. None if Cardenas wins B10s. Either way, tie, 5-5.
- Win % (10%): Ferrari will be unbeaten. 10-0 Ferrari.
- RPI (10%): Ferrari definitely loses this to both Barr and Cardenas. 10-0 for the B10 champ.

Roll up the scores:
Ferrari = 12.5 + 5 + 15 + 5 + 5 + 10 + 0 = 52.5
Barr/Cardenas B10 champ = 12.5 + 15 + 0 + 5 + 5 + 0 + 10 = 47.5

If Buchanan wins B10s, then he wins Coaches' Rank and splits Win %.

Caveat:
- If somehow Ferrari and Barr/Cardenas tied in the Coaches Poll, then it would be a 7.5-7.5 split and the B10 champ would get the 1.
- The NCAA Wrestling Committee does have the right to move seeds around, within +/- 3 seeds of the math. So they could overturn the calculations.

II rewatched Barr's match. Not to take anything away from Josh, but Coach Bormet lost that one for Cardenas. With 18 sec left in the 2nd tiebreaker the wrestlers went out of bounds. Cardenas had 3 sec riding time advantage at that point. Bormet signaled to Cardenas to continue to ride Barr from the restart. This was the coaching mistake that decided the match. If Cardenas cuts Barr, it would have tied the bout 2-2 but Barr would have to takedown Cardenas to overcome the 3 sec riding time advantage. Given that the spent the entire match on their feet, unable to get past each others base defense, a takedown in probably 12 seconds or less would have been highly unlikely. Bormet blew it for Cardenas. I love that Josh won, but Bormet lost that match for his wrestler.
