You’re probably thinking, wth? Why bother looking at Michigan State’s lineup? Well, morbid curiosity got the best of me. When I was looking at Kent State’s lineup, I saw that Anthony Tutolo transferred to MSU and I wondered why anybody would do that to themselves (and he’s not even from Michigan).

125 – Foley (So) <Pioneer, MI>

RayVon Foley went 28-11 on the season and 0-2 in the tournament. Foley was MSU’s only NCAA qualifier last season and then he had the misfortune of drawing the #1 seed in the first round.

133 – Tutolo (Sr) <Lake Catholic, OH>

Anthony Tutolo is a graduate transfer from Kent State where he went 29-13 on the season and 1-2 in the tournament. He’s taking over for three different starters from last year. Logan Griffin (Jr) finished last season as the starter and didn’t qualify for the tournament.

141 – Eicher (Sr) <Hartland, MI>

Austin Eicher was 7-5 last season @149. He qualified for MSU in 2017 @133, going 1-2 in the tournament. Eicher also qualified for Northern Illinois in 2016 @133, going 0-2. He’s taking over for Javier Gasca who went 12-14 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament. Gasca did qualify in 2017 (0-2) and in 2016 (0-2).

149 – Enriquez (Fr) <Tulare, CA> or Britton (So) <Whitehall, MI>

Jaden Enriquez went 17-6 during his redshirt season (mostly @141). His most notable win was a pin of NCAA qualifier, Jared Prince (Navy). Last season, Jwan Britton went 11-14 and didn’t qualify for the tournament.

157 – Tucker (So) <Mt. Carmel, IL>

Jacob Tucker went 20-18 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament. He did have a few wins against NCAA qualifiers.

165 – Ritchie (Jr) <Huron, MI> or Hiles (So) <Brecksville, OH>

Logan Ritchie went 11-22 last season and moved up from 165 to become the starter @174 after Hughes got hurt. Austin Hiles was the starter @165 last season and went 11-21.

174 – Hughes (Jr) <Lowell, IN>

Drew Hughes went 7-5 @174 last year before an injury ended his season. He went to the round of 12 as a true freshman @165 in 2017.

184 – Caffey (Fr) <Carbondale, IL> or Shadaia (Sr) <Rochester, MI>

Cameron Caffey went 22-6 during his redshirt season. His biggest win was against Nick Corba (former NCAA qualifier from Cleveland State). Last season, Shwan Shadaia went 9-20.

197 – Wilton (Fr) <Mason, MI> or May (So) <Loy Norrix, MI>

Brad Wilton went 21-8 during his redshirt season (no wins against NCAA qualifiers). Nick May went 6-22 as the starter last season.

Heavy – Beard (Fr) <Allegan, MI> or Rebottaro (So) <Monte Vista, CA>

Chase Beard went 12-6 during his redshirt season (no wins against NCAA qualifiers). Christian Rebottaro went 9-14 last season. Matt Lloyd (So) also had some starts last season and went 7-12.

MSU returns its lone NCAA qualifier from last season. They also add 3 more former qualifiers with Tutolo transferring in, Eicher returning to the starting lineup and Hughes coming back from injury. And there are 4 freshmen coming off redshirt seasons looking to displace starters from last year. It’s hard to do worse than MSU’s 0 point performance from last season (hard but not impossible – Chattanooga did have -.5 points in 2017). MSU should at least get a few wins at the tournament this year with Hughes being their best shot at getting an AA.

Not bad, actually. And only a pair of seniors. Rooting for them to turn it around for once. I think they have a decent shot at two AAs if Hughes can stay healthy. 125 won't be that strong, so Foley might sneak in. I like Caffey as well, but 184 is just too deep this year.

So according to those stats Gasca never won a match at NCAAs? He was a pretty solid wrestler, so that is darn surprising.
