OK State news - 2024-25

Categorize them however you want, they're all still imports.

Imports is your categorization.

I simply said there was no portal available to Cael.

Getting your little brother isn't quite the same thing as a fifth-year military academy graduate with 53 pins and two 3rds @ NCAAs.

We aren't going to know how good Taylor is at developing guys for at least five years when there's a record and by then Cael will have produced even more national champs.

You are already seeing development at OK State. The last ten or so years, top recruits would go there and not get much better. You are seeing development in wrestlers like Spratley and Jamison since DT got there, unlike last year. Not saying he is Cael, but he is already taking the team in the right direction.

Kellen Wolbert commits to OSU. Top 30 kid on FLO’s big board. I think he is likely a 141 in college. Wonder if it affects Jax or others in that weight range
We get Blaze, DT concedes at poaches Vega. Wolbert commits and we get??? 🤔

It won’t. I’m really surprised Flo ran a story with that as the subject.

Wolbert is a good prospect… but ain’t nobody scared of losing a roster battle to him.

And DT dang sure ain’t gonna stop recruiting any of the top ten just because Kellen wolbert committed.

Even Cam Amine got a major decision win yesterday.

Won't affect any of the Bassett/Forrest/Raney types. Will affect guys below top 20 or so.

Gotta hate this if you're Chris Bono:
"Wolbert is a two-time Wisconsin state champion and a 2022 Fargo champion, and he chose the Cowboys after narrowing his school list to four schools: Oklahoma State, Michigan, Missouri, and Division 3 Wisconsin La Crosse."

Wolbert lives less than an hour east of Madison. La Crosse is another 2 hrs NW of Madison-- and he'd have to drive right past Madison to get there.

It's one thing to lose kids to top D1 powers. It's another to lose them to in-state D3 schools 3x farther away from home, when you're the state flagship school and the only D1 program in the state.

Spratley had flashes of brilliance last year. Is his improvement coached up technique or the effect of year's worth of experience and the consistency and confidence that comes with it?

Right now DT is a shiny new car. Let's see what he looks like after a couple years.

Ultimately, eight months ago he was firmly in the camp of if you want to be the best, come to Penn State.

It is absolutely bonkers they extended his contract. Wisconsin needs Max Askren, but I’m worried the program will get cut before they make a change.

The ability to import will be the norm from now on. Its not like PSU doesn't have a few on the team right now
Yes, but that change makes comparing Cael's first couple years with ANY new coach an apples to orange comparison.

Cael took a team with a decent reputation and recruits and built an inimitable juggernaut in a couple of years.

Imagine the counterfactual where Cael had a portal and Hamiti was available. Would Hamiti have realized he had one last shot and come aboard? Maybe, but where was Ed Ruth and DT in this thought experiment?

If, and if DT get a top 5 finish in March, it will be because his reputation allowed him to go on the open market that didn't exist a few years ago. If not, a little shine will come off.

I'm into results. As of now, DT has a couple early season/tournament wins and that's all. Can he be great? Sure that's possible, but it's simply too soon to tell.

When Cael eventually retires, in all likelihood Casey and Cody retire as well, or move as a group to coach team USA.

It will be interesting if the opportunity has a strong pull on DT. I think it will, full stop.

Ultimately I suspect the hire will be probably be from within, in the form of PSU goats on the assistant staff. I don't think Nick and Zain will be the only additions over the next 5-10 years for sure.
