CKLV - Dec 6 & 7, 2024

So Keck beats Plott pretty easily again.

Are we still going to see weekly clips from FLO of Plott going against DT in the room and everyone declaring how much better he’s getting?
Sure be a hater. Every single OSU guy wrestled to or above their seed this weekend. That’s improvement.

Plott is almost at end of his college career suddenly he won’t improve multi fold. Still last two times Keck got 13 and 12 against plott, today only 8. Small improvement.

Please tell CP and the boys that. Maybe they’ll stop the breathless hype-filled reports from the room

DT had his boys humming this weekend. Every guy performed at or above seed. Nearly 50% bonus rate for the tournament. Caleb Fish coming off RS at 157 since Teague will seek a MRS.

More arrogance than hate. A dynastic juggernaut breeds it in the fanbase of such a team and would no matter it’s national location. If you visit, expect it, and know you won’t find many who objectively notice OSU's obvious improvement. I, for one, hope it continues, for the competitive excitement every strong opponent adds to the sport.

You have no idea. I found proof in my recent travels, will post as soon as I load my pics.

For now, let's just say it confirms GIA conspiracy theories.
You are going to tell us you visited the Japanese national wrestling training site and even the Japanese wrestlers hate the Iowa "wrestle for the stall call" style. Aren't you?

anyone else notice CKLV matches way too many times they didn't start the riding time clock one was like 30 to 45 seconds and it seems no one took notice!

OK, I was at CKLV on Saturday and had a pretty good time. You guys either saw a lot of matches on Flo or read the summaries here so I won't attempt to dissect any wrestling matches. I'll just give you a summary of my experiences and observations.

First, Ok State definitely looks like a whole different team. Every wrestler ended up at or above their seed. In particular, I noticed how DT, Gilman and Kennedy were spending a lot of time engaging with the wrestlers obviously going over technique and strategy. There was also a pretty big representation of Ok State fans in the audience. I spoke with a bunch of them and they all had positive expectations for the team this season. Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet anyone who has posted on this message board, but the people that I talked to were all fairly knowledgeable about wrestling and the Ok State team in particular. I wore a Penn State sweatshirt, and everyone was complementary about Penn State's program. I also didn't hear any crap about Sandusky.

One big thrill was seeing John Smith showing up as a spectator. I was a little surprised at how much older he looks nowadays compared to when he first took over the head coaching position. I'll be 75 in May, and I honestly think he looks older than me. Being a head coach may have taken something out of him. What was really different though was his demeanor. Whenever I saw him as a coach, he always had a dead serious look on his face. He was totally focused on what was happening and almost never smiled. That wasn't the John Smith I saw Saturday. He was all smiles and laughing while talking to his Ok State friends. That made me feel happy for him that he stepped down. Time to enjoy the rest of his life without stress.

Terrell Barraclough looked great and took 3rd place. One thing I noticed is that he looks a lot bigger when you see him live compared to watching him on TV. He should be able to hold his own against most of his competition this year. Now here's a little side bit about him that you won't hear anywhere else. He's been busy doing other things than just wrestling at Utah Valley. While watching his 3rd place match, there were 3 very attractive women sitting in front of me in the stands. Two were younger and one was more middle aged. After Terrell won, the two young girls got up and ran down to the floor. I asked the older woman if they were Utah Valley fans. She told me that her daughter was one of the two young girls and she was dating Terrell. She said she was very impressed with him as a person. I told her to tell him that there was a large contingency of Penn State fans rooting for him to do really well this year, and she really appreciated hearing that.

All eyes are on guys like Crookham, Ragusin and Ayala at 133, but let me warn you that there was a sleeper at that weight until Saturday. Zeth Romney of Cal Poly beat a bunch of guys ranked above him and took first place at the tournament. It wasn't a fluke. He wrestled really well and earned his trophy. It's going to be interesting to see how he does for the remainder of the season.

One of the high points of my day was meeting Nate Carr. He walked by me near the stands so I got his attention and told him that I was really excited watching him compete at the Goodwill Games in Seattle way back in 1990. He put on a real show that year with 3 big five point throws in 3 straight matches. He was totally thrilled to hear that and we talked a bit about the rest of his family. He asked me if I was from PA, and I said "Yep - Harrisburg." He smiled in approval and gave me a fist bump in reply. What a super friendly guy! If any of you guys ever get the chance to talk to him, don't miss the opportunity. Our sport could use 10,000 more guys like him.

I spoke with a group of people from Cornell and it sounds like they are having some problems, at least for early in the season. A lot of guys were injured so they didn't bring their best team to the tournament. Shapiro got another shot to the head and had to sit it out. I told them he might have to consider hanging it up if he gets any more concussions and they reluctantly agreed. Foca can't wrestle until January because he's too good of a student! He had to take a break until January or he would have graduated. Ivy League schools don't allow you to compete as a grad student. Dumb rule if you ask me.

When the finals were ending, I walked to the men's room which was behind the stands. When walking back, I noticed that the entire ASU team was sitting in a circle and Zeke was speaking. I didn't hear exactly what he said, but it was pretty clear that he was not happy with their performance. They didn't even place in the top 10, and I distinctly remember watching Schultz almost get pinned in the semis. Last year they had two guys in the finals with Figueroa winning. Figueroa was injured and didn't wrestle, and I think Schultz was the only guy who placed, taking 3rd at HWY. You can bet that Zeke is not happy with Slumlord Bob.

Last, but not least, I'm going to post a little heresy. I think you guys have Mike Amine pegged wrong. I bumped into him and another guy from Michigan and we had a really fun conversation for about 20 minutes. And it wasn't even strictly about wrestling. Mike came across as friendly and down to earth. He's well connected in the wrestling community and I noticed other coaches walking up to him to say hi. Yeah, I know you guys have seem him showing strong reactions while someone is wrestling, but that's not the person I talked to Saturday. He would be welcome at my dinner table anytime. He did tell me that Beloglazov left Cliff Keen to go back to Moscow. I didn't ask him why, but I sure hope it doesn't have anything to do with the Ukraine fiasco we've gotten into.

Well there's my two bits about what I experienced at the tournament, plus a little inside info trivia. I did get asked by a lot of people why Penn State wasn't there and I just shrugged and said who knows. It would be cool to see Penn State show up sometime, but I'm not going to second guess a coach who has won 11 national titles in 13 years.

Losing Beloglazov is a huge blow to Michigan and CKWC. He’s a great coach and was doing really well with that program

Great writeup. I wish I could have met you. Sounds like a blast.

As to the above, I would say that Cael enjoys a tournament in December to simulate nationals, but I don't think he wants it to be too demanding and invite injuries. The prize is March.

He's old enough where he may have gone to deal with elderly relatives.

If he has left Michigan permanently, that's gonna hit them hard. He was a huge draw for them, and coaches of that caliber don't grow on trees.

They're fine. They've the got the former HC of Team USA when we were doing REALLY well.

Absolutely love these kinds of posts. What a nice summary of a sporting event.

I forgot to mention that I had a chance to speak with Sammy Sasso. I told him that even though tOSU vs PSU was a big rivalry, there were a lot of Penn State wrestling fans that were rooting for him to get back on his feet and start wrestling again. He thanked me and told me he really appreciated hearing that.

Sasso said his spins was a problem I think he should retire so he won't get hurt worse!
Sasso is a fighter....a hero......a teammate to look up to and respect. I have no doubt that he with fight tooth and nail for the best he can achieve.....and that will be heroic and inspirational. Perhaps you should announce that you retire your opinions......in ALL CAPS......WITH PUCTUATION....... so they don't get worse............:)

Bravado doesn’t replace common sense. I think that Tullfan is alluding to the fact that Sammy might be risking permanent spinal cord damage if he keeps wrestling. If that were to happen, he could be spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair. I certainly appreciate Sammy’s determination and toughness, but there are times when discretion is more important than valor.

Sasso has been cleared by the Ohio State medical staff to wrestle. They have excellent health care in Columbus. Keep in mind these same doctors/medical system are the reason why Adam Taliaferro is NOT in a wheelchair today.

If there was any significant risk for permanent injury, he does not get medically cleared.

Adam Taliaferro comes to mind. it's good to be able to walk and be able to stand at a urinal, not to put too fine a point on it.

Maybe that’s true today but spinal injuries can change over time. I know that for a fact because about 20 years after I had a neck injury, I had to have a spinal fusion because a disc had deteriorated too far. If Sammy finds he’s in the same position, he would be wise to be very cautious.

Forgive me........I thought the smiley face was a universal sign that it was a joke and that everyone with a functioning brain unit was aware of that fact. Turns out I was wrong. I'll type slower in the future.......:)
