Mike Zaddick Says that PSU is the Benchmark...Not Iowa!

I found nothing at all wrong with what Zadick said. There was no disrespect to Iowa, only a passionate guy saying they should set their sights on #1, which happens to be Penn State. If #1 right now was Oklahoma State, he'd have said Oklahoma State, if #1 was Ohio State, he'd have said Ohio State...and if #1 was Iowa, he'd have said Iowa. No news here.

Agreed whats he gonna say, we were just given $1m to resurrect this program and we are gun'n for 4th place.....I kid hawk fans, I kid. :p:cool::rolleyes:o_O

I really don't think Zadick completely intended that statement as a burn on Iowa, but more of the honest truth ( PSU is the new gold standard). I'm certain there are some hurt feelings between Zadick and Tom Brands over Brand's decision to not keep Mike on board. I really don't think Brand's did the wrong thing because what Zadick brings to the table is much of what Brands brings to the table- Intense takedown wrestling. M* was completely different and they needed someone young and savy to help recruit. Zadick is exactly what Dresser needs, so it is a perfect fit.

Dresser certainly appears to be a top level administrator as a head coach. I'm guessing Zadick will be very hands on in the room with wrestlers and he is a very warm person. I think Kevin spoke volumes when he said "Zadick brings a lot of love" strong words of praise imo.

Metcalf is a straight forward what you see is what you get guy, and he is also very good at teaching the sport. I'm very excited to see what he can do in his position. I am certain he will work as hard as anyone in the country at what he is doing because that is simply who he is.

DSJ remains a mystery to me at this point, but Dresser obviously sees him as very important. Great wrestler if nothing else, but something tells me there is much more to him than I can see at this point.

Brands can certainly take a bow that ISU thought enough of a couple of his guys to want them as key components to a rebuild of a down program. I think this staff has the fire (Zadick/Metcalf) the cool headed administrator (Dresser), and the X man (ST. John) to be dangerous to the teams of equal recruiting prowess. I am very excited to watch the process unfold and hope to see small improvements each month. I went to the press conference last night and stuck around and watched the interaction with the kids practicing. Dresser was actually introducing Brent and DSJ to current ISU wrestlers as they came in the room. Surreal actually to watch the first interactions in person. Kevin Dresser has a personality with people much like a Cody Sanderson- You meet him and you like him. Zadick was the only coach not in the room as he is busy making the move. Sorry for all of the rambling as you guys for the most part probably don't care for hearing about a team who scored one freaking point at the NCAA tournament!

You keep posting what you are thinking/feeling. It is cool. The passion flows right off the page.

Iowa State is coming back, and it is DAMN GOOD for wrestling.

With that said, it's gonna take some time, won't happen right away.

IMO, Dresser structured his staff to recruit the home turf lb-for-lb with Iowa......using coaches who will also be recognized nationally. Relative to comparisons to VaTech - look how fast Dresser has gotten out of the gates at ISU....telling imho. The article I posted to your message yesterday with the two excerpted quotes from Dresser re: ISU vs VaTech also telling imho.

Substitute 'Lehigh' for 'Iowa' and it sounds a lot like what Cael said when he got here.

7 years later he is now the hunted, not the hunter.

Don't know about that - his exact quote is as follows:

"I'm not worried about Iowa, I'm worried about Penn State right now. [note, he started by talking about how ISU and Iowa wrestlers were often 1 v 2 when he wrestled, but he doesn't think that is relevant right now because....]. So if we're worried about a Penn State program right now, everything else will take care of itself; but our standards, we're looking a lot further than just across the street, you know. Iowa is part of the process and part of the teams we need to step in front of from that in-state rivalry, but Penn State - that's the team right now if you want to start looking at motivating our team right now as to who we have to beat, so...uh...going back I guess to the in-state thing and Iowa State, it definitely has a lot of development to be done right now. I do think we have the firepower in our program - I think it is more the development of their mind right now [goes on to talk about that he thinks the talent level right now at ISU is pretty good, but it is more of a mental thing and believing....and that they will need to be open-minded to change especially on the psychological and mental side of things...]

This portion of the statement:

"...but our standards, we're looking a lot further than just across the street, you know. Iowa is part of the process and part of the teams we need to step in front of from that in-state rivalry, but Penn State - that's the team right now if you want to start looking at motivating our team right now as to who we have to beat."

Was a pretty good shot by Zadick. He also comes right out and says that he thinks they have the fire-power to compete with Iowa right now:

"...going back I guess to the in-state thing and Iowa State, it definitely has a lot of development to be done right now. I do think we have the firepower in our program - I think it is more the development of their mind right now."

reading the "open letters" from Dresser and reports from recent CWC gatherings.....Dresser is moving fast....or as someone would say at a speed commensurate with the price tag he commanded to come. the Metcalf hire just shows how "all in" the AD office is. This is BIGLY for the donors, season tickets, media buzz, this is a big deal.

Only thing that could be bigger for the sport at this junction is if sPitt did something comparable. Which we know they wont unfortunately.

Imo, you're reading WAY too much into his comments.

I know the old fan base is suddenly energized. I have had at least 20 texts/calls from people who are fellow Moo U alum that are ready to get behind this thing. We have had some funny conversations. Iowa guys? Hmm?

It is odd that I don't feel very conflicted with my recent PSU fandom because the 2 programs are so very far apart in quality at this time. I'm not sure how I will feel if ISU ever does get to that top 3-5 place, but man would I like to find out. Right now it kinda feels like being a Yankees fan but still very much a AAA Iowa Cub fan. Two completely different things. I hope that analogy is laughable in a few years.

I do think it would be awesome (and a great PR move) if Dresser implemented bringing back "the robes" as apparently ISU was considering prior to Dresser's hire - hit the following hotlink:

I did not realize that Dr. Nichols was the party who introduced "the robe" to NCAA wrestling, designed it and had it manufactured at his own Fabric Company in Ames.

Would be a great connection to the past glory of the ISU program and a great recruiting tool imho.

Not sure I'm reading anything into it - he literally says:

"but our standards, we're looking a lot further than just across the street, you know."

He literally states that ISU's standards are much higher than Iowa right now - who he refers to as "the program across the street".

Here's another article I thought you would enjoy, appropriately from the "Iowa History Journal":

Article doesn't mention it, but it was Dr. Harold Nichols that put Iowa wrestling on the map back in the late-50s. He then proceeded to put US Wrestling on the map internationally. Any conversation of great US Wrestling Coaches has to begin with Nichols imho.

James--I love hearing from knowledgeable fans from other programs. I used to be on the now defunct "The Wrestling Talk", and really enjoyed the interaction of (usually) civil fans from different teams. It broadens our knowledge of a sport we love! As already said, "Keep it coming"!

Man that is cool. I wonder who has the Gentle Giant's robe now? It's probably in the Hall of Fame somewhere...

LOL, of course the "rational PSU fans" and "Iowa fans" won't have any negative energy. But...

Found a reference to it in this article - HIT THE LINK. According to this quote in the article from his wife:

“The hospital had no robes big enough for him,” Lawrence said, “so we decided he wouldn’t go into the delivery room. This is why small towns are so important. They took his robe, which is now in the Iowa State wrestling hall of fame, sanitized it and had it ready for him.”

Not sure if you were aware of this, but Jimmy Carr and Chris Taylor were very good friends because they roomed together at the 1972 Olympics. Apparently, Jimmy used to sneak out the window and get into the dining area of the Olympic Village and bring back tons of food for the pair. Jimmy's brother Nate would win 3 NCAA titles (the last 2 beating Kenny Monday in the Finals) donning the famous ISU robe.
