When you have a great staff, you're going to have turnover.
We were never used to that - get used to it now.
Back in the day PSU ACs had gone on to HC positions - - - - - most of the more recent ones where to places like Temple (Dickerson) [EDIT: Mea Culpa. Dickerson went from PSU AC, to a two-year stint as a DC at Clemson, before taking over the HC job] and Rutgers (Anderson) - waaaaay before Rutgers even dreamed of being in a P5 conference
But there were some who had more legit solicitations - - - Wake Forest (Caldwell) etc.
Even when Welsh went to Navy - Navy wasn't that far removed from being a big-time player......and he got them back to being a bowl team (back when that meant something) in short order.
Ganter was offered the MSU job in 1995 (a damn nice offer - incredible offer, actually - for a guy with no HC experience)
Other guys left for very nice jobs - guys like Radocovitch (sp) to the Steelers (IIRC) etc
Those guys were replaced.....and the beat went on.
If folks from the current staff find they are getting opportunities at HC positions at legit programs....that is the BEST you can hope for ('cause ain't hardly no AC - unless they are in "I'm about to retire" mode - that isn't going to entertain even "meh" head coaching opportunities - - - - let alone a P5 job)
.
And, if that happens, you're going to lose most of those guys (guys who get HC opportunities at legit programs).
Better to go find the next great coach, than to not have guys who other legit programs want.
When you start to worry, is when you have a staff full of guys who NEVER GET "upward" offers (Co-ordinators getting HC offers, ACs getting Co-ordinator offers).
That's when you need to start worrying.
Now.....a place like PSU losing a HEAD COACH (that they would like to keep) to any other program? That's another issue
Or losing guys to lateral (at best) jobs - like the Shooper - that's the kind of stuff you don't want to see.
I'm sure Urby didn't lose any sleep over Ash moving on (though I wonder if Ash has?) or even Jim Herman (who I am sure he would have liked to have kept)....just hire the next good one.
