Moving people around?

As usual, what we have here is exaggeration. And it depends on your standards. For you they must be pretty low.

So let me spell it out in a little more depth for you:
  • I said we have one undersized DE and that his play, for now, should be situational. That is not how he was used in this game.
  • I did not say we had bad LBs, but I've noticed that some (two on the second team in particular) seem a bit tentative. I'd rather not use names, but if you watch the recordings closely you'll see who they are. They are still good athletes, but we have little experienced depth there. Jan Johnson is solid. Micah Parsons, when he learns a bit more, will be a star.
  • I did not say we had bad safeties, though this to me is the weakest of our positional groups. I said we have problems with pass coverage, yet these same guys are the ones to do the showboating when they do make a play. Sorry, that is an issue.
  • I did not say we had inexperienced CBs. I said we had inexperienced depth. If we view the position in terms of just the two starters it is perhaps one of our strongest positions, but that won't matter if the safeties don't match up. I think the results when we played nickle or substituted support this view.
  • I did not say we had a bad OL. I said they would look bad if we did not run plays to keep the defense honest.
  • I did not say coaching issues at many levels. I said coaching issues at several levels with regard to protecting the starting quarterback. So what are they (in my view)?
    • An offense that relies on running the quarterback (Franklin's preference, so be it)
    • Playing the starter when the contest has been decided, putting him at unnecessary risk. And by extension, losing an opportunity to prepare the backup should the starter get hurt (Franklin)
    • Calling plays at the end of the game with a QB run option (Rahne)
    • Clifford not making reads to protect himself, even after the game was in hand (assume Rahne)
Please. Don't force me to waste my time. If you're going to offer a rebuttal at least give it a half ass effort.

Oh no rebuttal here- you misunderstood. I hold your expert film analysis in VERY high regard and was simply asking what you, since you’re so smart, thought our record would be. I’m a big fan and was concerned you thought the team would be bad based on the laundry lists of issues you’ve identified. Delighted to hear you still think 10-2 is within reach.

PS- feel free to name the LBs in the future. I guarantee they don’t care about your opinion

He makes plays.

Poz made plays. Mauti made plays. Navarro Bowman made plays. Sean Lee made plays.

If you lived in a cave for 40 years and after 40 years turned on a Penn State game, and had no idea who you were watching, after about 30 minutes you would recognize that #31 (poz), #11 (bowman), #45 (lee), #42 (mauti) were all over the field and making tackles all over the place..... You would not need the Internet, or the boobs on TV announcing the game to tell you those guys were good.

I do not feel this way about Parsons ..... YET. Maybe he'll get there. But in terms of "making plays", I would not be putting him in the same sentence as those guys.

The laughable thing about Wade showboating was that he was beat on the play and the kid dropped it. Would have been an easy first down.

Exactly. Said same thing. Wade posed as if he made a play and broke up the pass. The Buffalo kid simply dropped the ball and then Wade struck up a pose.......... foolish.

Yep. I believe I saw Brisker do some celebrating as well, but from what I have seen Brisker looks to have played at a higher level than Wade, although I've not really seen enough of either player's overall pass coverage performance levels with the limited views available within TV coverage.

CJF has stated that the rotation at Safety will continue but if Wade doesn't pick it up and if Brisker continues to refine his assignments I believe Wade will be sitting more and Brisker will be playing more. Wade seems to get lost in traffic whereas Brisker seems more physical and able to make more plays. I was one that thought that Wade's physique (although short he is a very strout and strong athlete) would allow him to be a tackling machine at Safety, but his play has been the biggest disappointment to me on defense so far.

A close second as far as disappointment so far on defense has been the performance of the DE's. Interesting comments in this thread about Toney and Parsons, but I believe Parsons is considerably bigger and stronger than Toney (i.e. I believe the roster listing of Toney is B.S. as Toney looks more like a WR than a DE). Not that I would want Parsons at DE - Parsons is an AA LB going forward. But I also would like to see Toney back to being a situational pass rushing DE, replaced by a more stout DE in the starting lineup. Who that would be is a topic in itself. Simmons would seem to be the top candidate, but where is Tarburton? Tarburton looked like a playmaker in limited reps last season - is he injured as he isn't even listed on the depth chart? Oweh is still learning the game, and Joseph must not have distinguished himself in practice either...... But if Toney is our 3 down starting DE oh-high-ya will run the ball on us like they usually do...... And Pitt could have success this Saturday even with their low-talent OL.......

I'll be watching the Pitt game from the 25 yard line so I hope to have a better idea of what's going on with the defense by mid afternoon Saturday.........

I’m 75, but some of you older guys (like over 25 with already hardened arteries) should face some reality. These are different kids with different values, it doesn’t make them bad just different. You tell them to cut their hair or stop showboating, and you will have more players in the transfer pool then on the roster. Plus in a few years you’ll envy Pitts recruiting class. Now I’ll agree that Wade looked foolish for taking credit for being in the same zip code when an open receiver dropped a pass. But score a TD, make a big play, go ahead and celebrate.
These kids come here and play in vanilla uniforms with no names (which bye the way I love) when half their opponents look like broad street pimps. That shows character so let them celebrate and the rest of us can tend to our lawns.

I don't want Parsons moved to DE, but I do think Shaka Toney's lack of size affects his play at DE or maybe, it's just his technique of lining up wide and taking an outside rush nearly every play.
Shaka Toney has been undersized and underperformed at DE since he arrived. This is the best he's been.

Just a gut feeling but I bet pitt tries to attack him.

It's a logical choice. If you were an opposing OC and were game planning an Offense vs. Penn State, I feel the 2 most logical attack points would be : a) our safeties and b) running right at us.

Our "outside" or "stretch/perimeter" defense seems excellent. In other words, our outside CBs in Reid and C-F seem to be very good, and we have a ton of team speed so getting outside and around the edges is difficult. I would not be expecting to run wide against us, and I would not be expecting my WRs to beat Reid and C-F with any type of consistency.

That leaves running right at us or attacking us in the passing game vs. our Safety coverage.

I believe Tarburton is injured.

I am no where near 75. But there comes a time when you start to realize that maybe you just don't fit in anymore and that maybe, in our world of intolerance to opposing views, it might be best to just fade away. (Players, being essential, get a free tolerance pass.)

The Buffalo QB already looks like an NFL prospect ; he gets rid of the ball quickly and some of the throws he made were phenomenal.

Amazing how much talent is out there at lower-level programs.

Yeah that one long pass down the sideline, he took the snap and in less than 2 seconds and put the ball on a dime 40 yards downfield -- crazy. It renders a pass rush pointless.

The PSU corner didn't get any kind of bump at the line or he could have disrupted the timing. PSU's coverage was good but the throw was too good..

This is the sort of s---- the App State quarterbacks were doing last year. I don't think PSU saw a quarterback as good as those App State kids the whole rest of last season.
