My challenge to the Paterno haters and their BS logic

Sadly IMO that is where the BoT grew to really dislike Joe. They thought they had him out and they were boasting about it on the pay site before you were ever around here. Then Joe said I'm not going anywhere and I really think that is where some of the bad blood grew from. People swore the BoT had the votes DAILY (Nitfan and restio come to mind) in 2004 and Joe was toast....didn't happen and Joe flipped them a big fat bird in 05 with an incredible year.

Not sure why you are looking for Paterno haters on a PSU site...very few exist here... but there are a few. Then again you are out on twitter looking for this crap too...oh well. Nothing like bringing the board down at the start of camp.

I read tweets like this:

and I smack my head.

Joe had FOUR losing seasons from 2000-2004, DURING the alleged cover up of Sandusky.

ok haters, explain how that logic works.

I'll wait.

Turning in the retired defensive coordinator that no one outside of PA remembered his name would have totally made the already squeaky clean program look bad for some reason. Everyone knows this.

So 2000-2004 were bad, but it would have been even worse if Joe would have turned in Jerry. Like Rutgers bad. That's motivation for anyone to orchestrate the worst cover up in the history of cover ups. The cover up was so bad, that it was disproven in a court of law!

the worst cover up ever. they told other people. they never silenced the witness. retained all their email evidence. SAD!

It doesn't. But, perception = reality (thanks media!). Even though the number of 'fair' reporters is far outweighed by those with an obvious agenda/narrative, no one cared to read too deeply into the actual events and major players (that is on the BOT and their ridiculous sanction of the Freeh Report).

It's like that final scene in Last Temptstion of Christ where Jesus (not dead) confronts a street preacher telling the story of how Jesus died on the cross. Jesus is like - 'hey, I didn't die - I'm here!' Street preacher is like, 'no one cares about the story where you live - they're only into the one where you died.'

I recall having a recruiting class of 11 or something like that during the Dark Years. How the f*** did that happen?

It is beyond stupid. Even forgetting for a moment the real Joe (academics, philanthropy, rules compliance, good husband, good father, good grandfather, etc.), the idea that a head coach would believe that he could only win with that defensive coordinator such that he would risk everything is absurd.

I'll just never understand why we are where we are. The attorney General praises Joe for his action. The lead prosecutor says on national TV that there is no evidence of a coverup. The NCAA re-writes their policy to mirror Joe's actions. The admins go on trial and are not convicted of any coverup related charges, which by extension means Joe wasn't involved in a coverup.

The ONLY thing that points to a coverup is the Freeh report. That report has been ripped to shreds by nearly everyone who has read it. Freeh himself has admitted it was just his opinion. Freeh's reputation has been destroyed as everything he touches has shown to be garbage. Yet that is what people cling to.

And he was retired when Joe found out. If you believed that Joe knew since the 70s, Sandusky was a nobody assistant back then. So either way it doesn't make sense.

Why did Joe cover up for JS? The answer is clear...

Anyone that tells people in power "No." is hated.

Paterno was saying "No" to people as far back as the 60's. He was always hated by people in Power.

If you think his loathing began in 2000-2004, you're on drugs.

I think it escalated then because they thought they had him....and he went out and was 1 added second away from an undefeated season.

The idiots never explain why Joe would cover up for sandusky because they can't. They never provide proof that he did because there isn't any. They just condemn him for doing it because it's easy.

Agreed. And I think Paterno may deserve some blame here. Had he tried to cultivate a better relationship with the BoT etc., I think the Sandusky matter may have ended up much differently when the stuff hit the fan.

That said, I have no idea what did/did not happen between Joe and the higher ups during that period. But something tells me that there was a bit of pride and arrogance getting in the way on both sides.

pitt athletic supporters cling to the false narrative for three reasons:

1. 7-23-1

2. 14-48

3. 409

Ironically, it's all about football for them. They don't give a damn about the kids.

How does Pitt get into this? Why? They aren't our rival so why even bring them up?

Not sure how much water that holds. If there were sufficient votes on the BoT, Joe was gone. Indeed, firing Joe didn't require a vote: Spanier or Curley could have done it unilaterally.

I don't really agree. I think what they did was chicken$h!t regardless. You may not like someone, but to accuse him and push forward this claim he was hiding Jerry was criminal in itself IMO. I may disagree with people on this site or in life, but god knows there is a line....they simply sprinted right past it and didn't even notice it.

You don't recall Nitfan and restio touting that the BoT had the votes back then....I do.

Another dolt who wants people to move on yet insists on posting in a thread to keep the thread going. You and Nit16 should probably call the authorities to report the guy who obviously is holding a gun to your head and making you read and post in threads that you don't want to.

Don't be such a crybaby.

Good recall on your part. I don't recall anything specific to the BOT having the votes to boot him, but I take you at your word. Could be I ignored it as unfounded hearsay, just as I did all the JS chatter. (I wish I had asked a few more questions about all that, given hindsight). As Art said, they didn't need the BOT ok to do that. But the BOT was going to have to answer questions about it if it had happened.

JVP was still involved in the fund raising efforts, which had quite a high target ($1B?, if I recall). I know they wanted him to stay on and go out on the fund-raising missions, as an emeritus HC. Seemed as though he was happy to be part of that effort, but wanted / needed to continue coaching for his own personal goals and drive. To me, giving in to that, knowing how valuable he was to PSU overall, was an easy compromise on the part of the Admin/BOT. When his career was over, it was going to be celebrated and held as a model.... a few mediocre seasons (along with some strong ones) in the final few seasons weren't going to matter in the long run. I certainly felt that way, as much as I wanted him to retire.... I was ok with him doing it on his own, because I (and zillions others) could look down the road and see the bigger view of his legacy.

It doesn't matter. The bot screwed up. Period.

Joe was selfish. He was done in the late 90s but held on because he was scared to death of retirement. It has nothing to do with wins and losses, it was all about his self preservation. We had good assistants that were able to turn things around. Joe was very lucky to have them as they basically ran the show for the last half dacade of his career.

And went on to win two Big Ten Championships a decade after he was "done."

Posts like this that implicitly suggest that Paterno got what was coming to him because he stayed on too long as coach say everything about you that one needs to know. A man's 61-year legacy and seemingly incalculable contributions to Penn State destroyed by a false narrative and it's all OK with you because of the great crime he committed...he was selfish and stayed on too long as coach. Man are you just a flat out disgusting person.

Even if that is all true, it doesn't mean he hid Jerry. One has nothing to do with the other IMO.

Yea, all that mattered to Joe was winning. So much so that he went and paid players, committed academic fraud, ran a rouge program. You know all of the normal things that all of the cheating teams do... Oh wait, you mean Joe never did those things, but his way to cheat was to cover up crimes for an assistant coach all in the name of winning... Okay, gotcha DICK Painter
