Name a team who can beat a top 5 team on the road with their backup QB playing three quarters

Defense could have won this game.

Giving up a 40 yd TD certainly didn’t help the crippled offense.

I agree with the premise. Except Roberson is not a D1 QB. By the fourth it was apparent that he was not going to be able to execute anything. Insert 3rd string at that point.

Sean sits until OSU. Franklin will start Roberson against Illinois. If we are not winning handily at halftime and he doesn’t pull him, prepare yourself for the season to implode.

We can still have a rematch with Iowa in 2 months, but Roberson won’t be a part of us getting there.

Agree, and it's not like Iowa is some sort of offensive juggernaut. I know they were on the field a lot, but the truly great defenses rises to the occasion. Ours did not in this, the biggest game of the year so far.

This all depends on Cliff injury.. He looked to be in pain and wearing a Flask Jacket. If it's broken ribs, it's over.

“ELITE” Teams(which sure a f$&k ain’t Penn State), such as the following:
Georgia
Alabama
Clemson
Ohio State(3rd string, actually)
Care to tell me when OSU did that? Their starter couldn't even beat Oregon.

Thanks so much... I can't think of one.
Up until a recent portal exit, we could. But that’s just the nature of college football, now. The current second string ( now first) is clearly a tremendous athlete. You can see that in the way he moves…. But it doesn’t appear that he’s very highly developed at quarterback …. The game is moving “too fast” for him right now. The noise/penalties and the dropped passes ( clearly some were difficult catches to make, but that’s what u have to do) were too much to overcome. It is what it is.… we will get slowly better with this new QB, but the playbook just shrunk by a great deal. Two injuries in critical depth positions couldn’t be sustained . Everyone played their heart out…. All should have their heads up

Has PSU ever been the on the other end of what happened today? Where PSU was getting dominated by another team and on their way to a loss, when their QB went down and PSU was able squeak out a win against a better team?

So, Cardale came in at halftime and won the Natty? Got a link? Lol.

Can't name even one, but I bet most could get the ball snapped!!!! It's on the coaches, horrible decesions. Why wasn't he ready to pkay?? Why did it it take 4 more possessions to figure out how to snap the ball? Pathetic loss Coach Franklin!!!

To hang this loss on your backup QB is absurd.

I'd say the non-adjustment to the crowd noise with the clapping snap count (I detest using that for that very reason), combined with getting constantly pinned very deep in their own territory - was the reason the offense stumbled.

That's a LOT for a backup QB - with practically no experience, in that big of a game in that environment against that good a defense - to overcome.

Jebus, let the guy get, I dunno, a week of 1st team reps let alone a full game or two of live action before pronouncing any kind of judgment on the kid.

Clemson lost without their starting QB last year….facts hurt some arguments.

Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State. They not only recruit...they develop.
I haven't seen the backup Alabama and Georgia QBs, but both the backup (McCord) and 3rd string (Miller) looked very good when they've been in there. In fact, McCord was the B1G freshman of the week a few weeks ago

Might want to add "with a 14 point lead" in there. The list grows at that point.

Also, Iowa is not a legitimate top 5 team, so that matters too.

agreed. The best comp is Georgia. Could Georgia beat a top 5 team on the road if the backup came in with a lead and the defense had to carry the team. The answer is absolutely. That’s why Georgia is #2 and we will be around #9 or #10 on Monday.

These polls mean nothing. Everyone knows IOWA IS NOT A FIVE TEAM. Stop that talk now. Its not about beating them, the embarrassing part is how unprepared this team is.

Oklahoma’s backup led a comeback against Texas today. That same Texas team would beat Iowa.
