Name a team who can beat a top 5 team on the road with their backup QB playing three quarters

There also a big difference between a guy coming off the bench mid game and having an entire week to prepare. He also basically played the entire previous game. Daniels also had started games previously at USC and was not getting his first ever real game action.
Careful. Wbcincy or RTMR will pretend that Cardale Jones did it to 13th ranked Wisconsin in 2014 as though that proves it has been done. In this whole thread, these pretend fans are seemingly desperate to answer the question the OP posed in a way that proves their blame game for Roberson makes sense.

TxA&M was on a 2 game losing streak. The losses were to Arkansas and MS State. Classic Nick Saban 4th quarter choke. Lol!

But that isn't true. Cardale came in in 2014 in the middle of the Big Ten Championship game against #11 Wisconsin. He had only thrown about 15 passes all year before that. He beat Wisconsin, then beat Bama, then beat Oregon to win the title. He started 2 games that season, both in the playoffs.

Here is your link to Cardale Jones' 2014 game log: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/cardale-jones-1/gamelog/2014/
Actually, Jones came in during the 2nd half of the Michigan game when J.T. Barrett broke his ankle. His first start was as a 12 pt. underdog to Wisconsin in the B1G Championship game. In 2015 Jones and Barrett traded starts.

Doesn't this verify my point?

Not even a little. Jones came in that OSU-UM game, yes. That UM team was 5-7. Not ranked at all. The question was about top 5 teams ON THE ROAD, not 5-win teams at home.

Excellent question Nitt 1300. Nobody has an answer. Otoh, anyone who felt confident once Cliff went out, and believes it was some kind of gimme for Roberson, and proof he should never have been recruited, does not have an answer to your question, and that speaks volumes.

They’re digging as deep as they can and all they can come up with is an incorrect example. I guess every coach in the country is bad at preparing their backup QB.
The sense of fan entitlement here is appalling, and as troubling in some ways as booing injured players

Not a ranked team, but did't Tennessee starter get hurt vs Pitt, and their backup is in now and they are playing better with him?

Certainly. It was just stated that Jones came in as a backup in the B1G Championship game when it was actually the last game of the regular season. Jones started in the blowout of Wisconsin.

You ask the wrong question.

It should be “Name a team that would not have won that game with their backup spotted a 14 point lead and with a defense that good?”

Most backup quarterbacks could play below average and win. The quarterback would have to be awful to lose. Guess what?

I asked a simple question- and nobody has been able to answer it. They just keep whining.

Asked a simple question… you added enough qualifiers to it that there would be almost no examples one direction or the other to point to. But of course you left out the important qualifier of “with a 14 point lead.” Also, it was asked in the hypothetical, “name a team who can,” but now you guys have apparently changed your question to “name a team who has.”

A 14 point lead (and actually was 7 very quickly) in the early second quarter is not an insurmountable lead….so I would say most teams would have lost that one had their starter gone down.

Thanks so much... I can't think of one.
Spoken like an immature 14-year old who can't accept the big L. Recruit better is the answer and don't be a one man show on offense and when that guy goes out you're sunk. It's football- not ballet.

Spoken like an insecure fan of a team that needed the starting QB to get hurt to eke out a win.

With a defense as good as ours and an offense as bad as theirs? Come on. All we needed was below average quarterback play, not what we got, and an offensive line that did not self implode.

Agree, most would. But the question just asked name a team who can. To answer Oklahoma is not “wrong” just because you disagree with it. That poster obviously believes Oklahoma could have won the game last night at Iowa if their backup came in. That’s the hypothetical the OP asked.

A TOP 5 team is a team ranked 5 or higher. I know they are.
OK, let me be specific. After what you saw yesterday, should Iowa be ranked among the TOP 5. Make your decision based upon talent, offensive capabilites, and defensive capabilities. If you still say they are a Top 5 team we disagree.

Well they were 3d, beat the #4 TEAM and #1 lost. I f#cking GUARANTEE they will be top 5 tomorrow. I don't have a vote, but I'll bet you $1000 that they will be in the top 5 tomorrow.

Rankings are meaningless early in the year. And not much better at the end of the year, since teams play entirely different schedules, in different conferences, and with irregular home/away matchups.

The NFL format does a better job of getting to statistical significance by the end of the year. But even that isn't perfect, since schedules get weighted to balance somewhat with past performance.

As it is, today's college rankings are just eye-test conjecture on top of a really small sample of views. But hey, when you can get a "Top 5" game on TV, it sells.

OK, so you won't answer the question. I will say Iowa has no business in the Top 5 based upon their talent level and the performance of their defense.
