Lol what?!We'll see, Coach Ryan made a good point that the NCAA does tend to lean in favor of the student-athlete. I'm sure they're in discussions about where they go from here.
Well what about my post did you not understand? Let's start there.Lol what?!
I would assume it was the part about NCAA leaning in favor of the student athlete since many feel they profit off the student athlete instead.Well what about my post did you not understand? Let's start there.
Well wouldn't that then be a potential good reason for the NCAA to keep them around another year? I believe what Coach Ryan meant when he said that on FRL was the NCAA has been favorable in siding with the student-athletes when it comes to matters of eligibility. That's how I perceived it anyway.I would assume it was the part about NCAA leaning in favor of the student athlete since many feel they profit off the student athlete instead.

I had the same thought. It's like an escalator where people at the bottom don't walk, causing a pileup. That said, most seniors probably will move on, so maybe the pileups would be manageable. With 9.9 scholarships, how do you keep all those kids around and bring in the new class? That isn’t much money to go around. How big do you allow the rosters to get? 43 kids?
I have no idea what the NCAA will or will not do, we have to wait and see. There is no precedent for a pandemic. With 9.9 scholarships, how do you keep all those kids around and bring in the new class? That isn’t much money to go around. How big do you allow the rosters to get? 43 kids?

You would have to increase the number of scholarships for each sport. Of course that could be an issue for athletic departments since most of these sports lose money, only the very big schools would go for that. With 9.9 scholarships, how do you keep all those kids around and bring in the new class? Those impacted by this cancellation should get a year back. If you were eligible to compete in the championships? You should get the option of the year back. The fans have a lot of influence on message boards, social media and any platform the NCAA can see. Use your voice to help these athletes. We need to help make it right. In our sport, its a little over 300 athletes who will be able to petition. I think ours is an easier fix than sports like basketball and baseball. The only wrestlers effected are the qualifiers.
This is why I feel a 4 in 6 rule for all is a good thing to consider. Everyone in the pipeline gets another year. Commits may have to re-evaluate, but any rostered athlete gets another year. The scholarship costs at that scale are the killer though. No easy answers.I said in another thread that I don't think there is a single good option here. Either way I think guys are going to be impacted negatively. You have guys who are taking redshirts this year who were slated to start next year like Starocci at 174lbs. If Mark Hall comes back for another year it means a guy like Carter could lose a year of starting. That's just one example. I am sure there are plenty of other guys on other teams across the country who were expecting to start next year who may end up losing a year of wrestling as well.
Solution? I don't know. Grant anyone who took a redshirt this year another redshirt to take next year? We are in unprecedented territory and like I said, I think no matter what they do some are going to be impacted negatively.
Probably only 10-15 schools could afford to pay an additional scholarship allocation even if the NCAA granted a temporary additional spot - which is another reason why it won't happenRegardless of granting extra years to seniors or current recruits, for some the question becomes who is paying for this extra year? For some, they don’t have or don’t want to spend an additional year on tuition or some that just want to move on with their prior plans. It will be impossible to come up with an equitable fix for every individual case.
How would they be back? They're talking about just the NCAA qualifiers? Still not in for itAlso think of someone like Kyle C or Anthony C they could potentially rehab and come back.
It would be awesome for the seniors and Brady B.
Yes. There’s a class full of high school scholarship athletes - across all sports - preparing to transition into college. What becomes of their opportunity if you extend the eligibility of these winter/spring athletes? And what about the current HS juniors, etc.? Where does it end? What are everyone's thoughts? Will this season count towards eligibility?

There is a great solution. Two national championships next season!! One with the old guys, and one without!Good points all. There is no easy or completely fair solution. I feel for all of the wrestlers that lost an opportunity to compete in NCAAs this season, even the Hawkeyes.
Do what the Masters is doing...postpone the winter and spring sport championships until this fiasco has cleared up. Hopefully in mid-summer. Hold the championships then, and start the clock as normal in the fall.
One major disagreement with you characterization of Emmert. You forgot inbred.@Cowbell Man
"hard realities are....Hard. Next steps for life are in order."
Precisely. There is no "fix" for this. Life moves on. We can't forget that these are college students that wrestle, not wrestlers that go to college. They are there to get a degree as preparation for the rest of their life.
Meanwhile, there's kids waiting to get into the college phase of their life, so if you grant an extra year of eligibility, you just put the delay of life on them. As a matter of fairness, how realistic is it if you have a 24 or 25 year old wrestling an 18 or 19 year old. Let's also not forget the vendors and staff that would have worked the tournament.
What they might have done is to have held the tournament after testing participants and officials. But this is Mark Emmert operating in a time of mass hysteria-it wouldn't have helped vendors or staff, but it would have involved the NCAA spending money without revenue.
I don't think I need to remind Penn Staters who Mark Emmert is, and why he's been called "feckless, arrogant, self-aggrandizing, inept"

If this happens, they should consider doing them outside. I’ll check if the Linc is available!Do what the Masters is doing...postpone the winter and spring sport championships until this fiasco has cleared up. Hopefully in mid-summer. They don’t need to do anything. Some people might think it would be nice to get two concessions out of the NCAA. But the NCAA can just say you get only one concession, take it or leave it.So if an extra year is granted, they also need to alter the scholarship equivalent to accommodate incoming freshmen.
