Read this in the CDT this morning, and looked for an article that all may be able to read. That article is below.

This proposal DOES NOT AFFECT WRESTLING, only football, and Men's and Women's basketball for now if it passes.

The gist...close the grad transfer loophole, is how I read this.
-- "Grad transfers" are not being stopped, which means they will continue to be able to start for their new team right away.
-- The three sports affected are head count sports, just an fyi.
-- The school will be "charged" for a second year of a scholarship IF the student-athlete does not complete, or earn his/her secondary degree within a year.
-- I read this as a start to addressing this situation. Posting it here, as it has the potential to affect other sports down the road. Not sure how (though I have a few personal thoughts), since wrestling and most other sports are equivalency sports.

The NYT article ... has a few more details, including how Texas Tech got some grad transfers to help them.

When is the vote on this? I see the intent, but not sure I agree. I might need to have a few drinks to let it ferment in my head.

So you are penalized by having to allocate a scholarship for a second year if they fail to get the graduate degree in a year. How many grad transfers get a second degree in a year? What grad degrees do you get in Parks & Rec anyway!! Seriously, the Tech kid said it truthfully, this isn't about academics. He already has his degree. The transfer is about athletics.

The numbers on grad transfers getting degrees must be low for them to resort to this ... if it passes.

It is a clear attempt to refocus on academics. Are they picking the right fight to try to reduce the free agency that exists?

The free agency exists primarily because of the waivers being granted to someone like Justin Fields or Tate Martell, didn't like their situation so they left (of course tOSU shyte all over Martell bringing Fields in).

Granted many of the grad transfers really have no intention of getting their grad degree, how is that any different in hoops where plenty of guys show up as a freshmen with no intention of getting a degree? Many of the one and dones in hoops do not even attend classes in spring semester, they drop out after the season.

Then there are the questionable 6th years granted. NCAA has plenty of issues of their own making to examine...at least with the grad transfers, the student-athlete graduated.

All this will do is shoehorn grad students into 1 yr programs regardless of their academic interests.

Because there is absolutely no way the football coach will forfeit a scholarship for a year so Johnny can get an MBA or MS in Engineering.

Even more so, the hoops coach with approx 12 total scholarships.

there's a docu-series on netflix called QB1 that follows some of the premier high school QB recruits and season 1 followed martell. i'm really not shocked that he bolted at the prospect of not being THE GUY.

The graduate degree completion rate for any student, athlete or non athlete, transferring from one school is going to be extremely low after one year. Typically, grad programs require at least two years. There are some schools that offer one year graduate degrees for some programs, but they are typically integrated into the undergraduate degree at the same school. A 4+1 where you actually start working on your Masters while you are still an undergrad.

Creating a rule that makes it damn near impossible for any Grad student to complete has nothing to do with a refocus on academics. This rule makes as much sense as penalizing a program for every athlete that does not get their Bach degree in two years. This is the result of schools being pissed that their athletes are deciding to go elsewhere after they graduate.

God forbid a student athlete should ever be encouraged to graduate. I wouldn't be surprised if some programs have already started restricting their athletes to just the barest of minimum classes needed to maintain the low standard for NCAA APR in order to prevent a kid from finishing their degree before their eligibility expires.

Requiring them to get a Masters in just one yer will only encourage seedy schools to offer more fake, no show classes i.e. North Carolina.
