Nevills

I'd suppose Mike Tognetti celebrated the injury to one of our student athletes on the Hawkeye Report and was called out for it by Hawkeye nation, Kudos Hawks. Now let's call on Tom or whomever to ban Tognetti for going over there like a school girl to celebrate an injury to a Kid, time has long been overdue for this Tom and you know it. I wonder if a regular visitor here in Coach Tirapelle would want a guy like Mike T posting here about his pupil? Tirapelle would lose respect for this board if we condoned and allowed guys like Tognetti to hang around.
For everyone's reference, BWI does have an Ignore button -- you just gotta find it. Click on the offending member's handle or icon. In the upper RH corner of the member page, there are 3 buttons: Report, Ignore, and Follow. Voila.

Doing this also denies someone the satisfaction of claiming he got martyred over here with the ban hammer.

Good point. He's moving to Ignore

I guess myself and the entire Hawkeye board disagree? He went over there to kindly share rumored information about another team's wrestler, that's far from being any kind of a man . We can disagree. This board deserves better than Mike T. When it's injury related that crosses the line, I challenge board members here to read his initial posts and see how they feel. Tognetti backed off a bit when challenged and back peddled like a true Poke would on the mat.
I agree it comes across as way out of line, but I also think he respects the sport and the competitors. I also think he enjoys stirring the pot, maybe a bit too much at times. I hope Nevills is ok and if he is out for a while I'm excited to see Johnson.

The silver inning in all this is that PSU just picked up a rather highly rated recruit for no scholarship dollars. Maybe he ends up enjoying college wrestling so much he makes it permanent.

About whether Johnson is now a scholarship athlete or has been promised money going forward. Maybe. Maybe not. We won't know unless someone that does know tells us.

I went to church, praying for the next injury. You guys need to try wearing some boxers. You all got fat and it cutting off your circulation to your brain! I posted on there board and everybody is up in arms about it. Society has made it pretty hard to say what you feel without a bunch of hens crying like babies.

Interestingly, the only real knock on JJ is his comparative lack of footspeed vs "elite" football recruits.Very high football IQ to go with his high IQ, but JJ won't be winning any dashes. At 6'3 he could easily become a DE......plenty explosive. Wants to go to med school....if there was the next Carl Nassib buried on the roster, it would be Jan. Bulking up now might be a completely new, better path for the young man. He has a passion for football.

Togs do you have any children or people you care about? Then insert their name in your posts about athletes! How would you like it if bad or negative news was being spread by others about those you care about? Maybe it wouldnt bother you but it might bother others, such as your wife (if you have one, bless her soul). Just quit being such a jack ass and start enjoying your team and quit revelling in the pain of others!

Revelling in the pain of Nick or any athletes, I never did that. Re read my post, said he was hurt on another board which I got the information from this one and mention about how it would change the team race if it was true. Both are true statements, if people want to make a bigger deal about it, then it's on them. You act like I was the one that hurt him, being a parent and someone said what I said and saw the reaction, I would laugh about it. Maybe I'm not the touchy feely kind of guy that this society has created in the last 20 years, we're your afraid to say anything because you will offend somebody. Have you ever saw me post about a wrestler and put him down other than how they wrestled and even than I probably bit my lip and said nothing. Just don't understand how my post can lead to this, some people just want to make a big thing out of nothing.

He can't receive a dime from Cael this year, or it counts as a full ride on the football team.

In future years, same NCAA rule applies, so he's getting nothing from Cael unless he quits football.

Does Franklin have and is he willing to give Johnson a scholarship this year or going forward? Will Johnson be playing football next year? In other words we don't know what he is getting or has been promised for future seasons until someone that does know tells us.

As El-Jefe and SHP pointed out above, given that he is on the football team, we know he isn't getting wrestling aid this year.

Considering the tragedy at OSU yesterday, you would think Tognetti would get a little perspective and tone down the nonsense.

Not really. Based on all past results, the only thing I expect from the guy is more of the same tired schtick.

Maybe. Is Franklin using all of his alloted scholarships this year? We have no idea what was worked out. For all we know, Johnson may be the only kid on the wrestling team with a full ride courtesy of Franklin helping out Sanderson. Or not.

There is no "maybe" to it. Whether Franklin has allotted all of his scholarships has no bearing. Multi-sport athletes count fully against the 85 ship limit in football.

Ok, no maybe on the wrestling aid this year. But football aid this year and promised football or wrestling aid in the future, maybe.

I'm not sure if I follow your logic. The kid is a good two-sport athlete whose passion is to play football. He has been asked by Cael to fill in while the current heavyweight recovers.

If he continues to follow his passion of playing football, he will continue to count against the 85 ship limit in football.

Johnson is a walk-on on the PSU football team. Pretty sure that he presently does not have a football scholarship. If this is indeed the case, as I believe, he doesn't count against the 85 ship limit.

No. Whether he actually has a football scholarship or not, has no bearing in counting against the 85-ship limit. If he is a multi-sport athlete (and plays football), he counts against the 85-ship limit if he receives any aid.

This prevents football coaches from giving their walk-on football players scholarships in other sports.

Yeah, I get the last part, but not the first part (red font above). If Johnson (or anyone for that matter) has a football scholarship, he definitely counts against the 85 ship limit.

It's found in Rule 15.5.9

Here is the NCAA link:

Page 205 of the NCAA manual (if you view the number at the bottom of each page). If you were printing the manual, it can be found on page 219.

I apologize for the confusion and rabbit hole.
Good info provided that I admittedly didn't know.
My only point which went further than needed is unless someone that knows the specifics of Johnson agreeing to wrestle then who knows if they decided to give him a football scholarship this year or if he will be playing football next year and any promised money from either program as part of that agreement. In other words he was a football walk on but this is what it took to get him to wrestle again.

I have to believe he's doing it to get on the mat and see where his heart takes him. He might have an idea where he stands against his team mates on the football field and he gets to see how he measure up on the mat.

I have heard both that he is listed as 216 in the program and 230 by others. Remember, we lose Mac this year and Cassar had shoulder surgery. Depending if goes the wrestling route he might be able to cut to 197 or if Nick has any long time health issues he could bulk up and see how he fairs.

Hopefully long term he has to earn his time on the mat against Nick or Anthony and those who come in next!

Stove Pipe saying that Nevills has a torn Pectoral muscle. Based on my limited medical training - Google- I'm coming up with 3-4 month surgery recovery time with an additional duration to get back to 100% strength….ugh

Folks should have been able to read the tea leaves and know this was not a young man second guessing his commitment to football. This is a young man who is putting his dream aside to help his school....with the blessings of both coaches. Cael asks, Franklin blesses.

So it would seem to me... if the assumption that he's out for most or all of this year... Nick would be eligible for a 6th year, when the time comes, via medical hardship. The half way mark of last years scheduled competitions would have been the dual vs Indiana (13th competition of 25 scheduled)? So the Scuffle would have fallen before the mid-season mark, correct? Add in this year, and it seems he would qualify... not that i'm well versed in the NCAA rule book. I'm also not sure what specifically qualifies as a "scheduled competition" (i.e. Clarion/Nittany Lion Open)?

Last year doesn't count when considering the Five-Year Waiver. Pretty sure on this.

While he didn't specify what the injury is, Ironhead said on the radio this morning that it is season ending, he already had the surgery and rehab should take six months.

He wrestled unattached last year so that he could redshirt. I am not sure how his injury last year factors into his total eligibility.

Lets hope he recovers fully and has a good three years representing the Blue.

MIKE SOME OF THESE GUYS ARE A LITTLE TIGHT AROUND THE YOU KNOW WHAT. I DIDN'T TAKE IT AS A BASH OR YOUR EXCITEMENT THAT A GUY FROM AN OPPOSING TEAM GOT HURT. I'M SURE IF ALEX D GOT HURT YOU WOULD POST THE INFORMATION AS WELL. THEY CAN'T SEE THAT YOU WERE JUST GIVING INFORMATION TO OTHER WRESTLING FANS.

Surely Tognetti would be happy to share with us how a torn pec impacted recent Poke heavy Alan Gelogaev: how long Z was out, his recovery plan, his rehab, how he did afterward, etc.

That would be a constructive use of a message board account, amirite?

As for banning posters, I limit my evaluations of all such situations to what someone posts on BWI's boards.

I'm not sure I follow that it doesn't count in the consideration to waive the 5 year and grant a 6th. If a player redshirts by choice, be it his own or the coaches, it is unlikely there would be a 6th year granted even if 2 later years were lost to injury. The question becomes how would Nevill's redshirt year be viewed...as choice, or by injury thus paving the way for the 6th. It was certainly choice leading up to the injury at the scuffle.

So do you mean it doesn't count because he was injured? And of course the 6th ends up a case by case basis.
