Nevills

He is a walk on and therefore does not affect the 85 scholarship maximum. The team can carry up to 105 players which includes walk ons. Currently we sit at 81 or 82 scholarship football players. Therefore, this has no effect on the football team scholarship wise.

Correct me if I'm wrong: PSU football is not yet all the way back up to 85 scholarships from the NCAA sanctions. Even though the sanctions were reversed, the rules about max # rides per year still apply, so we're not quite at 85 yet, right? In any case, IIRC, Franklin does not have any scholarships this year unallocated.

He does count against the 85 if he joins the wrestling team. See Sullivan's link to the NCAA rules. That didn't use to be the case but it is now.

My main question is Johnson joining the wrestling team now or after the football season is over?

If he has joined the wrestling team before now, how long has he been practicing with the team?

He counts against the 85 if he joins the wrestling team, and receives any athletic aid.

Actually, according to the rule you linked which is below even if he doesn't get any athletic aid he counts against football. Not a problem this season as the football team has less than 85 counters.

15.5.9.1 Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a counter who was recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) and/or offered

financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more

sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8)

and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including

basketball) shall be counted in football. (Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, 1/15/11

effective 8/1/11)

I'm not sure that is the situation that applies here. Johnson is a walk-on for football. Therefore, we should look at it under section 15.5.9.1.1

15.5.9.1.1 Initial Counter. A counter who previously has not been counted in football (which is Johnson's case), shall be considered an initial counter even though the student-athlete has already received countable financial aid in another sport.

This means if he were to receive any type of wrestling aid, it counts against the 85 total ships allotted for football.

This sounded right, so I looked up Eli's last matrix; he's got us at 82 total schollies used during the 2015 season, with only 1 (at this time) available for the 2016 season.

Actually, there is. It's very circumstantial -- the poster admits its 3rd/4th hand -- but it is there.

Let's tap the brakes on this until we know more. And not give Tognetti any further reason to tap dance on Nevills' supposed grave, like he's already done on HR and OState. (To be fair, he got slammed pretty good by quite a few on HR, and has drawn a collective yawn on his home site.) Stay classy, Mike!
Mike's protestations notwithstanding, someone on HR brought up something I had forgotten. Remember when Cael sent Mark Hall a photoshop recruiting letter about him being a 4 timer for us with Mark in a PSU singlet? Mike thought it was a violation and pretty gleefully posted it on various boards. After some analysis, turns out it was an allowed recruiting contact.

I wonder if Mike is one of the guys Jason Bryant (I think) says anonymously tries to dime out various programs he thinks are commiting violations - even penny-ante crap. I believe JB mentioned fans who send him stuff like that at times.

Where there's smoke there's fire.
Oh Jammen - you are adorable.

You desperately want it to be true now that Minnesota is 3rd fiddle. I thought it was suspicious myself when a second-rate wrestling state like Minnesota had a flagship University winning championships. It's not like Southern Canada can compare to Iowa, Ohio, NY, NJ or PA.

When Jammen busts Ohio State for excessive tanning bed passes, then Minnesota will climb to 3rd fiddle. Unless they've also been passed by Michigan and Nebraska.

Where there's smoke, there's someone who fell asleep in the Columbus tanning bed. Remember, only you can prevent 3rd degree UV burns.

CMT.... That post on HR was me.......I have a tough time letting Mike slide when he does stuff like this (though I'd sleep better if I would just ignore him).

I was unaware of JB calling out clowns like Mike.....just not sure what makes that guy tick! I was also pleased wih the way most if not all Hawk posters on HR responded. They may not all love us but they sure love and respect the sport!

Chickenman,

It would take a High Speed Trading (HFT)-like platform to measure the minuscule amount of time it took to "analyze" and debunk Tognetti's baseless "recruiting violation" theory. And that's what makes him look even more foolish. He hasn't a clue what is and isn't allowed.

Not sure it was JB who alluded to anonymous tipsters - don't want to put words in his mouth, but it was someone in the wrestling press who posts on TheMat.

That's my take as well. Even for the NCAA, it would make no sense to count against the 85 ship limit in football if the student-athlete was receiving zero financial aid in any sport.

He's on the wrestling roster now.

Realistically, how big do you guys believe Johnson can get by the first dual while still being in wrestling shape? Just curious on size expectations for him? I know its all speculation but this is still October so forgive me for such a tough question to answer . Id think he'd want to be at least 230+ before stepping on the mat vs the Big Ten heavies?

I know a way for him to put on good weight:

I simply can't see it (The weight gain). Rolling around with Cael et al will cause him to lose a lot of weight. I think he will be lucky to maintain his current weight, let alone gaining any good weight.

225-230 is reasonable, and might be on the conservative side. His walking around weight was probably in the 210s after states. It's not unusual for a college football player to add 15-20 lb of muscle in an offseason.

I'm too lazy to search for this, but check out last fall's Washington Post article on Spencer Myers -- especially his diet. Johnson will get enough protein shakes to make Arnold Schwarzenegger envious.

Johnson is a walk-on on the PSU football team. Pretty sure that he presently does not have a football scholarship. If this is indeed the case, as I believe, he doesn't count against the 85 ship limit.
if i remember correctly,if a person has a football scholarship, they cannot play any other sport until they have completed a year on the football team.

Rolling around with Gingrich will probably take some weight off from where he was with football....but his priority all summer and fall has been getting bigger and stronger. I am sure the staff will have that covered. He is long and lean so he has the frame to add the weight. It may not be a stretch to be a solid 235 by March. He probably has three time fences you would try to build to. Southern Scuffle....test of endurance and how you measure against top kids. OSU is early Feburary is big....just because it is a big event. Big Tens and National in early March.....the main menu. Not much different from the rest of the team actually.

I can't wait for Friday the 13th

I wonder if Ryan Monk becomes the back-up option to Jan Johnson after the FB season ends. Also, is Scott Syrek totally done with wrestling? I know he had a string of injuries dating back to HS, but I think he'd still be a RD SR if enrolled.

[;

No. Whether he actually has a football scholarship or not, has no bearing in counting against the 85-ship limit. If he is a multi-sport athlete (and plays football), he counts against the 85-ship limit if he receives any aid.

This prevents football coaches from giving their walk-on football players scholarships in other sports.

Isn't this the Bear Bryant rule? I heard he used to use Alabama swim team scholarships for Alabama football. I only use Bryant because he's the guy I heard stories about. I'm guessing other coaches (Darrell Royal, Bud Wilkinson) did the same or similar at their schools.

Not giving up a FFT is huge just from a sport of wrestling standpoint. Kudos to Jan and Cael for getting the open spot figured out.

Scott Syrek is no longer on the team. Scott's shoulders would probably dislocate on a high crotch to a 240lber. I used to coach and wrestle him in practice back in high school, so I can say that jokingly and with some merit. Love Scotty though and wish him the best! If his younger brother, Riley, ate a couple of donuts a day up until the start of the season, he may make the minimum weight requirement.

It has been reported that Johnson is no more than 220lbs (closer to 215lbs), and I expect him to be around that weight. Expecting him to be at 230lbs is just not reasonable, especially when he starts wrestling. Johnson's biggest issue right now is getting into wrestling shape. He hasn't been on the mat since HS and is in football shape, which is a lot different than wrestling shape. At least he's been training and running, but it's still a LOT different. I envy the kid though. Being able to eat as much as you want and the guaranteed starter on the potential national championship team. Success rubs off and combine that with his quickness, he should do just fine. We're talking about a former 2x PA State Champ here. Expectations should be higher than when Conaway first filled in a few years ago at 133lbs. I expect a lot of neutral position and outside singles from Jon. I also expect him to improve as the season goes on.

Conaway had a 1st and 3rd at PA States, won over 145 bouts in his HS career including a Dapper Dan win. I had pretty high expectations of him. He's made AA and R12. He had a very similar HS career to Jan.

Yes, but Jordan's state title and Dapper Dan wins were at 112 and he wrestled 133 as a RS Frosh when he could easily still make 125 as proved by him being an AA at 125 2 years later. Johnson just wrestled at 195 8 months ago. The two situations are not really comparable.

Not sure I made a good argument there since I seem to contradict myself now that I read it. Anyway, having high expectations of a true frosh at 285 in any case are not a good idea let alone one that is very undersized. That said I expect he will be ready to be an NCAA qualifier come March.

Johnson was 2x champ + 3rd.

Conaway made R12 as a freshman (albeit after shirting). If Johnson does that this year, we'll be very happy.

For now, the goal is to qualify for nationals, then see what happens. That might be doable. Looking at CP's rankings for B10 wrestlers: 2 Coon, 7 Kroells, 9 Smith, 10 Jensen, 12 Black, 16 Tavanello, 18 Peck. (Plus Stoll.) History says more than 8 conference qualifiers. Johnson is probably better than the rest of the heavies, with the possible exception of Chakonis at NW if he doesn't shirt.

Conaway 146-20 with 1,3 placements - D1 rated as 109th recruit
Johnson 170-8 with 1,1,3 placements - D1 rated as 37th recruit

Regardless of high school accolades, Johnson will not get the benefit of a year in the room before starting. He will be an undersized true freshman heavy. Realistically, I'm hoping he qualifies. Ecstatic with any points he might contribute.

seems this is resolved, but if JJ isn't receiving any aid from either sport so he doesn't count against the 85.

Since we are in the middle of football season, I wonder if Jan will finish FB before joining the team or is this immediately??

I wasn't aware of that, but I'm no expert in such matters. However, it's a moot point, even if it is accurate. As established multiple times in this thread, Johnson does NOT have a football scholarship.

I heard the he is already in the practice room which most likely means he is not practicing football any more this season.
