Cael really hit a home run with Nick. You can just see him getting better and better as the season has progressed. Also looks ripped for a true freshman, guy must have next to no body fat. Really the complete package. Never thought I'd be saying this but honestly think he has a legitimate shot against Gilman going forward.

I have to respectfully disagree, Cael hit a GrandSlam;)

Cael is one coach who has every excuse to rest on his laurels when recruiting - letting his accomplishments do the work for him, but what does he do when he really needed a hammer at that weight, at that time?

He and his staff show up at the Suriano's at 12:01 am on the first day visits are allowed and closes the deal. That type of commitment and effort is probably the reason Cael went 159-0 as well.

As for Nick, purest shots on the team I think (him or Zain).

He's looked smaller-framed than everyone he's wrestled this year as well (I don't mean this in the OMG HE'S TOO SMALL way). Gives me warm fuzzies about him holding that weight for as long as needed.

I know we weren't supposed to have another DT /Ed.....then we got ZNN......well that will never happen again....now we see Nails and wreck....

Berge, witlake, Manville, RBY, snacks, ......the beat just. Goes. On.

Cody talked about this "size thing" (or is it a weight thing) recently, when discussing the Penn State guys. Started about one wrestler in particular, but expanded to others. Fans use eyeballs (in-exact) to make judgments, while he was talking about the type of weight some of our guys carry, and that they may look smaller, but weigh the same and that it's a good thing for our guys. Never put much credibility into the "that guy looks huge compared to the other guy" comments anyway, but Cody put it to bed once and for all for me. Caleb Livingston ballooning to 210 and going heavy aside ;). Not debating Spiking's comments, just adding to them by mentioning Coach's comments...wish I had it on tape.

Being cut and defined like NATO does not make you stronger - muscle density determines strength, not "definition" (i.e., think body-builder vs Olympic weight-lifter....the weight-lifter is substantially stronger at the same weight regardless of how they "look" in terms of definition. This is true because definition and tone are generated by higher reps at lower weights...power-lifting - i.e., true strength - is achieved by lifting max weight at very few reps. Toned muscle has much higher water content and much less "muscle density" than a weight-lifter", etc...).

I totally agree. Height and frame still matter when we're talking about a guy comfortably holding a weight, though.

Suriano looks like he is improving a little bit every week. Gilman has reached his ceiling.

It's going to be very interesting come big tens and nationals.

My biggest concern regarding Nick v Gilman is that he really never looked that close to solving Gilman's near impenetrable defense - especially his head/hands defense coupled with a powerful hips (i.e., sprawl) for weak shot attempts.

Nick is very determined to beat Gilman...He had a very nervous first period last time...Talking to him he can not wait to show the nation who is the best 125 pound guy...NICK WILL BE NATIONAL CHAMP !!!! He has really been back and forth with Nico all year...Now he is getting the best of him for those who go to practice see...That Gilman match lite a big time fire....

Years ago after Nick's marathon match with Fix, I had the pleasure to talk to Nick and his father. How awesome it turned out he is now in a PSU singlet, and no doubt he can win it all this year!

I was impressed how Nick, and the whole team really, were unfazed by the hostile environment. The true frosh went out in front of the 15,000 and started things off with a TF. He's ready for the big stage.

Each wrestler is different of course.

In a recent interview of a team member, perhaps after the Iowa Dual, perhaps Bo iirc, he said that they tend to feed off of the crowd emotion and knowledgeable fans at home and away.

If most of our wrestlers can adopt that mindset, it's good for the Nits even in big and hostile environments.

In some ways it makes sense too. As fans of wrestling, the team can appreciate fans who are knowledgeable and excited to see great wrestling. Putting out your best effort and best moves in front of an excited crowd that recognizes what happens is likely a thrill.

Much better than small, unenthusiastic crowds who might not "get it" when a wrestler does performs very well during a match.

Started things off with a Tim Foley

There is that muscle is much more dense than fat thing.

Thats an inaccurate explanation of muscle mass and strength. There is no recipe its all about genetics dude.

If you saw his home workout setup, it's no surprise. The guy who designed/built it showed me photos this past summer. Nick is pretty much what I expected after watching him his senior year of high school. Pretty advanced in all positions for a true freshman but still room to get better. You're not going to outwork him.

Nicky Nails.

That was the nickname (real name Nikola Dedaj) of convicted enforcer for NYC mob leader Alex Rudaj. Nicky Nails was Rudaj's chief enforcer and co-leader, and the "main dispenser of violence," per the US attorney at trial. Presently serving 26 years in federal prison so I believe the nickname is available for use.
I called Nicky Nails months ago. Mobby or not it fits him.

simply 'Nails' is good enough for me..
Nails was Lenny Dykstra's nickname, which also fits. Dykstra was similarly focused and intense. Until the latter stages of his career when things got pretty weird.

I'm starting to think like you FT. Rodriguez is no slouch (even if in a slump) and Nick totally dominated him. His confidence level is increasing. He hit some good shots on Gilman in the 3rd period, but he still looked too tentative. I think if he had hit those with more confidence he would have had at least 1 TD on Gilman. It would not surprise me at all if he beats Gilman. Not saying he's favored, but definitely possible.

Dykstra was Thumbtacks before he discovered the juice.

Listen Nick is going to beat Gilman and everyone else on his way....You would not believe how he is wrestling Nico on his feet since the Iowa match....HE KNOWS HE IS GOING TO WIN....hE WILL NOT BE HELD DOWN BY DANCE EITHER WHEN HE TRIES TO THROW IN LEGS.....HE IS ON A LASER FOCUS MISSION....TAKE THE NERVOUS AWAY FROM THE FIRST BIG MATCH AWAY AND HE BEATS GILMAN THE FIRST TIME....HECK TAKE THE FIRST PERIOD AWAY AND HE WINS....I AM NOT CONCERNED ABOUT HIM AT ALL AFTER WATCHING HIM SEVERAL TIMES IN THE ROOM....

When Nick beats Gilman in Bloomington, he'll be the 1 seed. Dance will be Gilman's problem.
