Nick Suriano

Nicky Nails is too mafia, how about the Jersey Italian Stallion?
Well it's a nickname, he's not legally bound to its implications. Joe Louis? Not actually a bomber, though brown. Fred McGriff? Unaffiliated with any domesticated animal law enforcement agencies. Pete Maravich? Unarmed. Jack Tatum? Zero actual kills. Julius Erving? Never even attended medical school.

Nails was Lenny Dykstra's nickname, which also fits. Dykstra was similarly focused and intense. Until the latter stages of his career when things got pretty weird.

1993 Phillies were my favorite. They had a lot of interesting characters on that team. Darren Daulton was a former state champion wrestler that once pancaked a guy rushing the mound, lol. Unfortunately much like Dykstra, Dutch seems to have gone of the deep end as he gotten older. Check out this quote from Darren :

I started experiencing these different realms, these different planes of existence ... I know exactly what I'm capable of doing. ... People talk about speaking with lizards and stuff. You can communicate with anyone, with nature, that's all that happened there. To me, that's not a big deal now. I like to astal travel, teleport, travel through time ….December 24, 2012

Yeah, seriously sad, though the drug talk is less problematic than the numerous fraudulent businesses he's run into the ground. I grew up a Mets fan and Dykstra was my favorite player, stood on line for two hours to have him sign my jersey once. Great story about Darren Daulton, never heard that, thx.

I'm a Pirates fan but liked Dykstra and the way he played. He had a Pete Rose quality about him. Played with heart, hustle and a big fat wad of chew busting the side of his jaw.

Yea that's a good analogy, he was a lot like Pete Rose, on and off the field.

Always enjoyed how they would play Start Me Up at home games when Dykstra led off.

Listen Nick is going to beat Gilman and everyone else on his way....You would not believe how he is wrestling Nico on his feet since the Iowa match....HE KNOWS HE IS GOING TO WIN....hE WILL NOT BE HELD DOWN BY DANCE EITHER WHEN HE TRIES TO THROW IN LEGS.....HE IS ON A LASER FOCUS MISSION....TAKE THE NERVOUS AWAY FROM THE FIRST BIG MATCH AWAY AND HE BEATS GILMAN THE FIRST TIME....HECK TAKE THE FIRST PERIOD AWAY AND HE WINS....I AM NOT CONCERNED ABOUT HIM AT ALL AFTER WATCHING HIM SEVERAL TIMES IN THE ROOM....

Well, I hope that ends up being the case but based on simply what we saw in their first meeting, I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to chalk it up to simply "nerves". In fact, I would say Gilman's bullet-proof defense had a lot more to do with the loss than "nerves" or "nervousness".

Couple things concern me about the initial match - first, Gilman was able to get a "clean" TD on his first (and really only) committed attack early in the 1st period. Second, Nick really never came that close to penetrating Gilman's armour.

Rematch is very likely going to be ultra-low scoring much like the first match (and the Mega-Gilman affairs) - guy with the 1st TD is likely going to win. Will be interesting to see what adjustments Nick makes to his Neutral Offense....of course those adjustments may make him more susceptible to Gilman's attacks as well though - we just won't know until we see Suriano-Gilman 2.0 at B1Gs.

Well that and a boatload of steroids as well which transformed him from a pop-gun hitter when he entered the bigs into a 1-hole / 2-hole hitter with serious power.

Although not much fazes Suriano, I have to believe that his first match in CHA and Against the # 1 guy, did at least contribute to a slow start in that match on his part. It's difficult to judge Gilman's defense because he was running away for much of the third period.I believe that he can certainly take Gilman down. I think your point about whoever gets the first takedown is a good one. We shall see.

Cael is one coach who has every excuse to rest on his laurels when recruiting - letting his accomplishments do the work for him, but what does he do when he really needed a hammer at that weight, at that time?

He and his staff show up at the Suriano's at 12:01 am on the first day visits are allowed and closes the deal. That type of commitment and effort is probably the reason Cael went 159-0 as well.

As for Nick, purest shots on the team I think (him or Zain).

Can you send me this link? I read the article a while ago. One of my buddies is trying to claim that Cael never wanted Suriano and I need this link to claim shenanigans. TIA.

I realize this is an old thread, but check out the Dykstra/Charlie Sheen connection.

Hollywood's Most Toxic Bromance: The Implosion of Charlie Sheen and Lenny Dykstra
I hadn't heard about all of Dykstra's post-career problems. I knew that my brother's brother-in-law bought Dykstra's house in Phila, so now I guess I know why he sold! I hate to hear about people who have been so blessed blow it all. Cael and coaches do a good job of helping our guys feel thankful for what they have!

What's the current wisdom from the board on the likely outcome of Suriano vs Spencer Lee?

I'm leaning toward Spencer Lee.

I don't think Spencer will take Nick down. It's going to be really close, but Nick's neutral defense is incredibly good and Spencer is not going to horse him around.

I think this one comes down to whether or not Nick is willing to go under Spencer. While I don't think Spencer will turn Nick I do think he will ride him for a whole period. Can Spencer get out from underneath Nick?

I like Nick to win. I think Nick will win this with a TD in the third.

This isn't the one about the midnight visit, but Cael's quote in the paragraph above 125 should settle it.

If this doesn't, consider getting new friends.

"But a guy like Suriano, we recruited him saying, 'hey, Nico's a senior, we need you to step in and compete as a true freshman,'' Sanderson said. "He knew that, he wanted that. He's preparing to compete. He's in summer school right now.''

I'm too old to make new friends. At this point, its life of solitude or deal with poor choices from my youth.

Not sure if this is what you’re after, Banjo, but an exhaustive 30 second google search (;)) brought me to this article, which states:

“The coaching staff at Penn State showed how much they wanted him. The first day they officially could meet Suriano in person, the entire Nittany Lions coaching staff walked into his Paramus home one minute after midnight
