I often post about my son and his love of Penn State and desire to attend Penn State. He is a 17-year old junior whose first love is playing football. TE/H and LB/DE (in a 5-2), standing 6'2+" and around the 200# mark.
His back started getting sore during the latter part of this past season and following the season, sharp pains in his butt. Trainer was working with him, but it became worse. Couldn't put shoes and socks on, but I was not informed of that until after we visited the doctor. I should have noticed the signs with butt pain earlier.
All that said, we are trying to get a surgery scheduled for a displaced disc at L5/S1. Same problem Gronkowski went through this season. Now, if my son becomes a multiple pro bowl football player, great. But, right now after myself having had 2 disc surgeries, I am not excited about him getting cut.
We are Prayer-believing God-fearing people, so if you want to offer one up that all goes well and he recovers fully for his senior season, it would be appreciated.

TIA to my Penn State message board friends.

best wishes for a good outcome- they have made great strides with this type of surgery

Little rascal will be up and about in no time is my prediction. Hang tough, both of you.

I wish your son the very best result - a speedy healing and full recovery.

Medical advancements these days puts most people in good hands when having procedures done. He's young so he should rebound quickly.

Have you looked into whether a chiropractor may be able to help? I've seen where they can do wonders. I visit one myself when I have a pinched nerve in my neck. Used to happen frequently until I went to my chiropractor and whenever it came up I just went to him. I've seen him twice in the last 3 years if that tells you anything.

Good luck

Good Luck!! To both of you!! Most important I would guess, is to make sure of the re-hab that needs done!

Prayers sent for your son and family.

Wishing you the best over the holiday season.

One additional thing. Depending on the operation and its immediate impact, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be very careful in the admin of any pain meds. It's really a tough call, but if at all possible please consider the "benefits" of some level of discomfort if at all possible. The horror stories are well known and dont need repeating in any detail.

I absolutely believe in the power of prayer and will keep your son in mine. He has the benefit of youth on his side so I feel confident the surgery will go well and he will have a complete recovery.

When it comes to back issues I understand. My best to your son. And what I am about to say is not a joke but "I feel his pain."

OL...look into Dr.James Ficke...he gave me 100% relief after two prior failed surgeries...the man is a freakin' genius. I had two or three prior years of agony that eventually prevented me from walking 50' without having to sit down.
Dr. Ficke, a neurosurgeon, originally from Iowa, operated on me at the Mt.Nittany Med.Center in State College...two and a half wks later I and my wife were in Europe for two weeks with several land tours requiring some significant walking...G-d bless that man's hands.
I'm not sure if he's still in SC, but it's worth the look see.
Good luck to your son, whatever the future lies for him.

According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), up to 7% of patients who are prescribed narcotic or opiod analgestics to treat chronic pain will become addicted. Experts estimate that approximately 4.7 million Americans are addicted to prescription painkillers. This means that 2% of the American population is estimated to be addicted to prescription pain pills. https://www.pbinstitute.com/2-percent-americans-addicted-prescription-painkillers/https://www.pbinstitute.com/2-percent-americans-addicted-prescription-painkillers/

Don't let an irrational fear make your kid suffer in pain. Most of the abuse of pain meds are from people that were not prescribed the drugs.

But the simple reality is this: According to the large, annually repeated and representative National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 75 percent of all opioid misuse starts with people using medication that wasn’t prescribed for them—obtained from a friend, family member or dealer. https://blogs.scientificamerican.co...lem-but-pain-prescriptions-are-not-the-cause/

May his surgeons be accurate, wise, skilled and at the top of their game in his instance. May you son recover more quickly than normal, without significant pain and be back to normal very soon. May this be a passing event that builds your faith.
There are no testimonies without tests. May you graduate with honors.

Hate to sidetrack this important subject but irrational fear driven by illegal activity does not obviate the need for and proper use of analgesics when significant pain is present. The fear of a substance should be directed toward a respect for the proper use of the substance and its medically necessary prescription. Any use outside of that is illegal.

If you son is in significant pain he will either use them or suffer needlessly. Needless suffering is a sad outcome when fear is the stimulus. People in major pain do not generally gain any type of high but do have less pain. No drug takes all the pain away, believe me, I know.

You are correct. I didn't mean to minimize the dangers of pain medication. I certainly wouldn't give my son a bottle of pain meds and say take them when you're in pain. I would keep the bottle and administer them on a schedule. I just didn't want the guy to deny his kid some pain meds for serious pain just because he was afraid his son may become addicted.

I wish your son all the best sir!

Prayers will be said for sure.

Tom McA,
Yes, he was. His HS school number for three years has always been 26, and needless to say, the last two years have been good for him to watch PS's #26.
AB_XXVI.
No word yet about seeing one of Ro's sigs though. :D

Thanks again for your help.
