At least seven Penn State Board of Trustees members or their respective companies donated to The Second Mile in 2010, according to the charity’s annual report.
It is not clear when each member of the board were made aware that former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was being investigated on reports that he sexually abused boys he met through The Second Mile.
No one from the office of the Board of Trustees responded to repeated requests for comment and declined to provide a statement at its office in Old Main.
A Pennsylvania grand jury began investigating the former coach in January 2009.
Four trustees made donations in 2010 — two donations totaling more than $50,000 each.
J. Lloyd Huck, the retired chairman of the board of pharmaceutical company, Merck, donated more than $50,000. His wife, Dorothy, sits on two of the four Boards of Directors with The Second Mile.
The Board of Trustees recently appointed the current President and CEO of Merck, Kenneth Frazier, as chair of the Special Committee. The committee is a team that will conduct an internal investigation of Penn State and how its employees responded to reports of Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a locker room.
Frazier is not listed as a 2010 donor to The Second Mile.
Huck is also listed as a member of the Arthur and Evelyn Sandusky Society — meaning he made an estate provision that leaves money to The Second Mile after he dies.
Huck could not be reached after repeated calls for comment.
In addition, Linda Strumpf, a trustee representing business and industry, also donated more than $50,000 to The Second Mile last year, according to the report.
Strumpf also could not be reached after repeated calls for comment.
Quentin Wood, an emeritus trustee, and Paul Silvis, a trustee appointed by the governor, donated between $500 and $999 to The Second Mile in 2010.
Silvis wrote in an email that he and his wife reassess which charities they donate to each year based on “how we perceive they help the community.”
Wood could not be reached after repeated calls for comment.
Three companies associated with members of the Board of Trustees also donated to The Second Mile in 2010.
The PNC Foundation gave between $2,000 and $4,999 in 2010. Trustee Edward Junker is the retired vice chairman of the PNC Bank Corporation.
Junker could not be reached after repeated calls for comment.
Occupational Athletics Inc. also gave between $2,000 and $4,999 in 2010. Trustee David Joyner is a partner and corporate medical director with the company.
Joyner was appointed acting Athletic Director on Wednesday. He could not be reached after repeated calls for comment.
Finally, the United States Steel Corporation donated between $2,000 and $4,999 in 2010.
John Surma, vice chairman of the Board of Trustees is the chairman and CEO of USS. Surma is the trustee who announced the end of Joe Paterno’s career as head football coach and Graham Spanier’s as Penn State President.
Surma could not be reached after repeated calls for comment.
Spanier previously served on the Board of Directors for US Steel Corp. He resigned from this position Tuesday.
Penn State University, as a whole, also donated between $1,000 and $1,999 to the organization last year.
