Football Notre Dame defeats Penn State 27-24 in CFP Semifinals

What a wild ride it's been. 11-win regular season. Berth in the CCG. Two do-or-die playoff wins. And now a final-4 matchup against Notre Dame. Still playing football on January 9. This year has been one for the books.

And how great would it be to keep this going for another 11 days with the accompanying buzz and excitement around the program. Counting down the hours til kick!
Another huge disappointment. Not a single signature win. Illinois?

I won't be able to sleep tonight thinking about that last turnover. I just don't understand it. The call, the throw all just horrible. As someone said similar to the end of the Oregon game. Where we just throw it up for no reason.

But I actually do like Allar and hope this game doesn't define him.
Too late. He is defined. So is his head coach.

Good run. We wanted in the playoff. We won twice and took an L late in the semis.

Let's watch again tomorrow night.
Another disappointing season. No big wins. Failed in conference (twice).

If we want to compete at highest level, we need to reclaim mental toughness. It won’t be easy but I would like to see us try.

We’ll never get such an easy draw again. Two MAC-level teams, beat up ND team that frankly is not that good.

But the seeds of this groundhog day were sewn long ago. Not a single serviceable WR on the roster. That should be a dismissible offense.

Well, PSU didn’t win, but it was still a fun football game to watch. Great way to spend the evening.
Sun was always going to rise in the morning, win or lose, at my house. (Probably behind the typical gray clouds.)
Hope everyone here can avoid calling each other names and hurling criticism at kids who were playing a game and giving it their best imperfect efforts.
Great season. Good night to all.
Fun game to watch. But a colossal disappointment and another Underachieving season.

Time to try to reclaim our identity of mental and physical toughness.

It won’t be easy. But it should be quite obvious it won’t be Franklin to get us there.

I hate it when Ohio State kicks our a**, but they’re better than us. What’s more aggravating is losing to what I think is a very mediocre, clearly inferior ND team. It blows.

Well, it was an excellent season and a fun ride to be still in it in mid January. It’s now on to wrestling and fantasy baseball prep. Night all.
Who did we best with a pulse? Illinois? Please don’t tell me Boise or SMU. We had three games of merit in order of difficulty: O$U, Oregon, Notre Dame . Al three were failures. Should have won two of them but at least one would have been acceptable.

Time to give someone else a try.

Perhaps 180 degrees to a discipline and details guy.

After a night's sleep I Am more upset with the wideouts than Allar. While I admit i didn't zero in on the wideouts during the game, I did observe that there was little separation from the DBs. Allar did make a huge mistake on his last throw but ND has a good defense, and he knew he had the opportunity to get into FG range and pulled the trigger, when the wideout had zero separation.
Allar had great moments and should be recognized for his excellent play throughout the year.

James beat zero top teams again. He once again beat average coaches and lost all who are equal or better.
James recruited a bunch of mostly non-elite high school talent and coached them to within inches of the National Championship Game.

If you aren’t happy with where James has brought this program, perhaps you should find something better, and more aligned with your capabilities, to do with your time … like staring at walls.

I’d rather just have all the fake fans go away, rather than try to ruin the good thing we have going with Franklin at the helm.

This loss sucks. The team - the coach, the players - do not. Take some time off, tweak some things, and get right back at it.

We’ll have an entertaining, successful team we can be proud of … yet again … next year.

You guys are babies and why I don't go to games . Our fans are whiny pussies

Go to a wrestling match if you wanna be guaranteed of other domination with next to a 0% chance of losing ever. That should last for a good 5 to 15 more years so you could have it in a bag till then.

It's a message board where people vent frustration about the same things that happen over and over, and results stay the same. Maybe go to the wrestling board if you don't want to read whiny posts.

What’s the excuse for not recruiting better talent - and developing it - at WR?

Since that is part of his job description.

Embarrassing performance by the WR room.

Time to give someone else a chance.

Exactly...and look at the recruiting rankings for the WR's...it's not like it's full of two star guys. Saunders was supposed to be something and he is awful. Trey and Omari should be better. JF has whiffed on the position coaches and overall development.

How long? Till he is 1-25 in big games? 1-35? 1-50?

He never has to work another day in his life.

He has not EARNED the right to lead a program with the potential of PSU.

Best chance to improve? Florida takes him.

Purpose Pitch calling critical fans fake? Why, b/c our national reputation as 'frauds', 'pretenders,' or any similar adjective should be accepted? We are a total laughingstock in these games....the butt of every joke. For a program that has all the high draft picks, tradition, fan support, etc., to not make big leaps and strides in big games after this many years is maddening. The numbers bear themselves out and they are flat out embarrassing. We don't even accidentally win one of these games...like stumble into a W. We find more ways to lose than the other team actually just beats us. Joe always used the word 'poise'...that is something that we have ZERO of in big moments in big games. You can see it manifest itself before it happens. We blew two different, 10-0 leads...we had them vs OSU and ND...granted early in the games and not some massive lead, but again, we just don't know how to win these games. It's mental softness...low football IQ, special teams that don't win games or move the needle from the return game side of things....too many problem areas that I'm sure JF will fix in year 12.

Agreed. 1-18 against top five is horrible. He had another chance last night. The Penn State offensive line dominated. How do you run all over a team and lose. How do you not a have a single competitive receiver with a ****ing portal to close that gap.
And Tom Allen was awful in the second half. It was Pry all over again. 24-17 lead with seven minutes to go and once again the defense does nothing. Same shit every time.
And once again horrible QB play in the biggest games from a kid who was supposed to fix that problem.

Looking back a few things I remember noticing.

1. Our players are never ready on the 1st drive of either half. That's coaching.

2. When the game was on the line and the ND QB got flushed out of the pocket and ran down by 11, he came back to the huddle smiling. He wanted to be there and accepted the moment. Drew looked terrified that he might make a mistake. He didn't wanna be in that situation.

3. It's easy to make adjustments for ND's defense when they realize that they can load the box and our WR's still arnt a threat. Boise made the same adjustments, they just were not talented enough to capitalize. Not a ton the OC can do when your best receiver can't win on single coverage even when Drew has time to work through his progressions.

It is what it is. This team was a Dotson type receiver away from being really good.
#2 is an excellent observation. And a very telling one

Yeah, everything should be perfect.

Again. This close to a National Championship game appearance.

The program, as a whole, is top notch. He brought it up from the ashes to the point where sad dinks like you can whine that we fell just short of being national champions.

And instead of being proud of the program, you want it turned upside down. Find some meaning in your pathetic existence, rather than trying to tear down someone else’s obvious success.

Game came down to three plays

Should have had easy td to Singleton on first drive on that short pass

Should have recovered that fumble late in first half

Should not have forced the ball with 40 seconds left and just dumped short passes to singleton to see if he could break yardage. OT should have been protected

Any of those three plays changed Penn State wins.

Let’s run it back next year

I’m calling “fans” like you fake because you’re just a whiny, tantrum throwing b!tch. All season long, all you’ve done is complain and criticize. Complain and criticize a program that was within a whisker of the national championship. Not some team that finished sub .500. A team that was as successful as one could imagine. A team that exceeded expectations. A team that already had lofty expectations (for a reason). And all you did was cry, the entire ride.

Seriously, go find something else to do. Whatever is lacking in your life that you need to act this way, and create these ridiculous expectations of what you "deserve" as a fan, go get it figured out in a different way.

I would love to know if Andy or Franklin reminded Drew to not take any chances because we have OT.

Another huge disappointment. Not a single signature win. Illinois?
You don't think our blowouts of SMU and Boise weren't better wins than Illinois?? They were picked for the 12-team playoffs and had a collective record of 23-3 when we hammered them. I don't know that I would call these "signature wins" but they weren't far off from that. This season was not a "huge disappointment" in my opinion. It was the best Penn State football season since the high points of the Paterno years. Looking at our roster, next year's team might be even better. We have a lot to be proud of as Penn State fans and a lot to look forward to.

If we would have won last night and then lost to Ohio State or Texas in 10-days half of this board would be bitching. If we would have won the national championship in 10-days, about a quarter of the board would be bitching that it wasn't by a high enough score. After the Sandusky debacle we could easily have become what pitt currently is. We didn't. Be happy!

Proud of how the team played.......except Drew. He played a really horrible game. Especially that last interception. Inexcusable decision.

60 seconds left and the nation was watching. He had his chance to be "elite" on a huge stage. It was there for the taking. The table doesn't get set any better. Sadly, he whiffed. I'm sure the kid feels like shit. I feel for him. One can only hope that he comes out of it stronger.

Steve Largent wasn't the fastest guy in the world, but he could run a route. One can't blame the talent whatever grades you assign them. Reminds me of CHEM451. The class average on one test was 33%. The professor stood up in front of 150 kids he clearly didn't prepare, and told them he was disappointed in us. 150 kids got it all wrong.................. lol....

Hey I had one engineering prof tell me “exams we’re a learning experience” it explained a lot why our exam questions were over material we hadn’t covered.

Our QB didn’t have a great game, but in the words of a great philosopher… “it’s a team sport bro!”

Receivers were not getting separation the defense gave up too many points the running backs weren’t finding the holes so o line wasn’t getting it done etc etc etc. It’s not all on the QB.

Give ND some credit they outplayed us in the second half full stop.

The team was competitive but never a complete team. The first two drives in the last game the Oregon game showed what they could be when everything worked, but they were never consistent against tougher competition.

He was trying to throw it away at Omari's feet, he said.

Well he missed his target by at least 5 yards then.... The ball was thrown well in front of OE.... and in a place where only the defender could even touch the ball. If he was trying to "dirt it", he also threw it about 5 yards too far (and again way in front of OE which makes zero sense as defender had inside leverage - he threw it where only the defender could catch it, OE was so far from where it was - he couldn't even make a play on defender and try to stop him from intercepting it.). If you're trying to "dirt" a ball, you throw it in the dirt short of the receiver - again, about 5 yards short of where Allar actually threw it.
