obli's observations; one that got away

Don't really wish anything bad, but could we lose #28? He is always a step slow in coverage.

With younger guys in the program, and those in the recruiting pipeline, we will probably continue to upgrade the athletic ability of our secondary, but this year's graduation losses will be significant.

I actually thought he played pretty well. He's been improving every week.

Came up big in run support too. Andrew Callahan featured a nice, but somewhat forgotten, play he had in pass coverage against OSU too:

One other point for perspective:
PSU scored a total of 80 points vs Michigan and tOSU, reputedly two of the best defensive teams in the country; that's not bad at all, probably more points than even some of our optimistic fans would have predicted.

some weird perspective, but PSU scored more points against the Buckeyes than Army + Rutgres + MD + NB

When did Bates go out of the game? Was it before or after we went right down the field to first and goal at the 7 throwing the ball? It’s all running together, and I honestly don’t remember.

It think he got hurt with 7 or 8 to go in the third quarter.

About 8 minutes left in the third quarter. We actually ended up scoring on the drive after his injury.

I posted our complete 'Drive Summary' in a couple other threads; really shows how inept our offense was at sustaining drives and running on first down. Here is my post:

----

Summary of Penn State possessions against OSU. We had a lot of success when we a) had Trace (and to a lesser extent Barkley) run *designed* runs, and b) when Trace had time to throw via designed pass plays. Gesicki won a lot more than he lost on Saturday - he should have been our 'go to' on nearly every play. He was targeted five times in the first half (including a 14 yard catch that was negated by penalty) and averaged 8 YPC. He was targeted four times in the second half - two incomplete, and the other two for seven and 22 yards respectively.

Also - even when you include Barkley's 36 yard TD run, and TM's six yard TD run, we averaged 2.3 yards on 1st down when running the ball (which we did 19 times, or 76% of the time on first down). Take those two plays out, and we averaged less than a yard per play when running on first down, and had 9/17 plays go for 0 or negative yards.

Passing on first down was nearly as bad - of our six attempts, three were incomplete, one was for no gain, and the two that did connect did so for five and 21 yards respectively.

The post said the punt block was caused by #4 when it wasn’t. It was the back line guy #46 who ignored the outside rusher.

The errors in the blocked punt play seem to be a little more complicated than anyone has recognized. I'm quoting rudedude because he provided the video -- not singling out his comments.

PSU has 3 guys on the right side of the center, 2 guys on the left side, and 1 gunner split out wide on the left side. Then they had 3 guys back in the gate, plus the punter. tOSU countered this by placing 4 guys opposite the 3 on PSU's right side, including 1 in the A gap. In addition, they placed 3 guys in the A gap on PSU's left side.

On the play, PSU's 3 blockers on their right slide slanted to their left. This enabled them to block the tOSU guy in the A gap, plus the 2 guys to his left. Unfortunately, it enabled the 4th tOSU guy (the guy lined up the widest on that side) to come free.

On the left side of the their line, excluding the gunner, PSU had 2 blockers. The PSU player in the guard position slanted to his left to handle the player to his left. This enabled the PSU blocker on the left in the tackle position to not block anybody, and just race downfield on coverage.

The net of these actions were that the 3 guys in the A gap on the left side of PSU's line ALL came free, plus the wide guy on PSU's right side came free. So you had 4 guys come through clean to be handled by the 3 guys in the gate. The gate personnel seemed to be concerned with the 3 guys that came through the A gap on PSU's left side, as that's who they blocked. Unfortunately, that proved to be a mistake, as the 3 tOSU guys in the left side A gap could probably have been handled by 2 of the PSU guys in the gate, at least in terms of keeping them from blocking the punt. Since all 3 of the PSU gate guys blocked the 3 guys that tOSU sent through the left side A gap, that allowed the tOSU guy that was wide on the right side of PSU's line to come untouched or unblocked to block the punt.

If PSU had not slanted their 3 blockers on the right side of the line, you still would have had 4 tOSU guys rushing to block the punt, as the 3 and the 1 guys in the respective A gaps would have been unblocked. The odds are that PSU's gate could have handled these 4 guys, at least to keep from having the punt blocked, but it wasn't a guarantee.

tOSU did a nice job of scouting PSU's punt blocking scheme, loaded up in the 2 A gaps, and got a little lucky as PSU's 3 gate guys weren't able to slow up all 4 of the tOSU punt rushers.

"tOSU did a nice job of scouting PSU's punt blocking scheme, loaded up in the 2 A gaps, and got a little lucky as PSU's 3 gate guys weren't able to slow up all 4 of the tOSU punt rushers."

The huge mistake here was not focusing on Denzel Ward, OSU's fastest player. If no one touches him, he has plenty of speed to easily get to the punter. Have to account for him all of the time on punts.

It's either one of two things. Bad scheme or wrong block. #4 downblocked, releasing the outside guy to the punter. #46doubled inside guy. NO WAY that outside guy should get a free run to the punter.
Yep...he was missed at the LOS and then by the inside protection. If they even stick out a hand there the punt probably goes off.

Maybe it was the gray uniforms that made him invisible? Turning point on the game, however.
They weren't as bad that way as I thought they would be. There was enough contrast. But most Buckeye fans here hated them. Frankly, if they tried scarlet numbers, they might have worked better.

many games, I've always thought, are 50/50. It's like a scale; it can be equal if you put 5lbs on each side, or 500 lbs on each side. Drop a feather on one side, and the scales change. PSU came up short and there are 20 plays that could have changed the outcome. So be it....

I watched the game in a bar in Foxburg PA, then watched the first half again last night. Amazing difference between the first and second halfs.

  • tOSU clearly had the better O and D line. By far the best we've seen all year.
  • What was sad is that our strength, the defensive secondary, was simply horrible in the fourth qtr.
  • You would hope it would tighten in the red zone, but WTF was covering deep middle against the TE? I saw that play was open several times earlier in the game but JT didn't get it there. We lost Campbell and meant to see if he was in during the 4th but didn't get that far last night. Did he play later in the game? Regardless, no pass rush and no coverage. In addition, we didn't blitz much either.
  • The game changed when Bates got hurt, but we were hanging on. The momentum changed when they blocked the punt.
  • Part of a game is mistakes, that blocked punt was an awful mistake. The guy on the right end blocked in leaving the DE open. Then the three guys in front of the punter blocked in and the DE had a strait shot. It wasn't a great play by tOSU, a mistake by PSU.
  • yet, tOSU will get credit. PSU will get no credit for tOSU jumping offsides and turning the ball over.
  • Moreover, PSU has lost the statistics battle all season. A lot of the pundits don't have time to watch all the games so check the stats. PSU always looks bad for the stats. This leads to our lack of respect.
  • As such, PSU's big plays were the KO return, the Barkely TD on the opening kickoff, the Barklley long run. tOSU's fumble. All big plays. We are a big play, strike fast offense.
  • Problem is, we don't sustain drives and that leads to losing big leads.
  • while we still have a shot, a stout defense and a ball control offense are big issues.
  • Barkley has one huge problem, he doesn't recognize when he needs to make the most out of a bad play, and just get back to the LOS.

Foxburg Inn?

Barkley has one huge problem, he doesn't recognize when he needs to make the most out of a bad play, and just get back to the LOS.

Yea, he still does this a lot. Part of it is the RPO, and getting pressured behind the LOS. With that said, sometimes he just needs to go North and South and get what he can.

#46 Colin Costagno. You never block inside without checking the outside first
I was always taught that linemen always block the man to your inside. Of course that was years ago so maybe thinking has changed. Maybe cvilleelkscoach can chime in. Maybe the conventions are different for the backs in the "gate".

The loss of Buchholz was just as damaging. his replacements are not nearly as strong vs the run.
Not only that, but it resulted in guys who typically see spot duty play more minutes than they were used to and Miller to essentially play the whole game. They were gassed in the end.
