Just my two cents... in no particular order.
  • The day had the makings of something special from the start. The clouds were swirling around the stadium ALL day... It would go from being sunny and somewhat pleasant, to overcast windy and down right COLD. The shifts in the weather, and then the rain during the game that wasn't in the forecast went hand and hand with the makings of an EPIC upset. Loved it.
  • I was surprised last week to find out that Ohio State didn't sell their allotment, on Saturday I found out why. After speaking with multiple Ohio State fans in the tailgate fields, who were all generally pricks mind you... Only nice after you go out of your way to engage them.. the majority I spoke to said instead of getting their tickets through OSU, they found better seats in the secondary market that were also cheaper. Also, of the many I talked to, not ONE of them actually went to Ohio State. This is clearly what is different about our fans. The majority of Penn Staters either went to Penn State, or they come from a family with alums. That is NOT the case at Ohio State. They support their team like NFL fans. After getting into the stadium I found what they said to be pretty true... there were a LOT of Ohio State fans in the lower bowl. I guess that's the one downside to putting the visitor's section in the rafters. The large fan bases go to secondary markets.... we saw that with Alabama in 2011 even though they actually sold their allotment.
  • I still think they play too many songs in the stadium, but for bigger games it's not as noticeable. There were a few times when the students started to chant, or the band started to play a song, and they cut the music on the overhead. That was the first time I noticed that... so overall I thought they did a pretty good job with a mix of piped in stadium music and the Blueband. I like the GoT theme song they use on defense, as well as the other crescendo sound that you hear before movies?... not sure exactly what that is.. but it gets me jacked up.
  • I noticed some posts below complaining about Herbstreit and Fowler's comments during the game. I rewatched the game this afternoon before jumping on this board, and didn't feel the same way. We were 3 score underdogs and were down 12-0 in the first half and 21-7 in the fourth quarter. As we started to claw back Herbie said multiple times how impressed he was with the 5 play 90 yard drive in the fourth, as well as the drive at the end of the second quarter. Praised our resolve, and ability to fight back. He also said multiple times that he was blown away by how our defensive front "was Manhandling the Ohio State Offensive line".
  • With regards to the student section comment which was made at the end of the 3rd quarter, when we were down 21-7... if you think about Herbie's view at the time... he was looking across the field at a student section that had HUGE sections of empty seats. All he said was that this could be re-evaluated each year... I kind of agreed with his comment. The best student section in the country shouldn't be turning their back on their team down 2 scores in the 3rd quarter. I wasn't overly offended by the comment. Of all the talking heads at ESPN, the last person who's thrown us under the bus has been Herbie. I respect his knowledge of the game.... I think overall, he was just not prepared for us to pull off that upset. There is such a thing as speechless....
  • The blocked field goal for a touchdown sent Beaver Stadium into hysterics unlike any other play I've ever witnessed. Everyone in our section (WF Row H) was leaping in the air, falling down, hugging and high fiving complete strangers... it was pandemonium. Some other plays that I can think of that might have been close to this... (Richard Gardner Pick 6, Nebraska 02; Lowry's pick against Ohio State 05; Winning TD pass to beat Nebraska '82....) Any others?
  • The scene on the field after the game was unlike anything I have ever experienced. The Alma Mater sung by 30k fans with arms locked around each other swaying back and forth brought tears to my eyes. I lost my friends in the whirlwind of it all, and ended up singing and cheering with complete strangers. Everyone one was in shock, many people wiping tears, hugging complete strangers.
  • I said before this game, that it had the makings to become the best games ever played at Beaver Stadium. You may argue that Nebraska '82 was bigger... but I don't think it compares to the statement we made on national TV, in a flurry of white, upsetting #2 when NOBODY outside of the NittanyNation gave us a shot.
  • This win put us back on the map... We play solid football the rest of this year, and I can't see us losing more than one more game. That puts us at 9-3 10-2... Also gives us a shot at a New Years Day bowl against a ranked opponent. We get a win in the bowl, and you're looking at a top 15 ranking going into next season. HUGE win yesterday.

I was very impressed by the level of play we got out of Cabinda and Bell. For two guys who have been out for quite awhile, they didn't look rusty at all. In fact, they looked much better than they did at the beginning of the season. It's amazing how much the kids can feed off the crowd.

One comment about the student section. With those kids standing the entire game, they fit more into an area than you can when seated. My kids have told me how condensed it gets in there which is what I suspect happened Sat night. Same # of students but packed like sardines in a smaller area.

I can tell you first hand that many of the students that left early were just too cold and were not dressed properly

Without Cabinda and Bell I think we lose the game. Ohio State just wasn't ready for them. They played like Onkotz/Kates, Conlin/Giftopoulos, or Arrington/Short. Ohio State seemed baffled by the linebacker play all game.

Great post! When I opened it I'll be honest I was like "i'm not reading this... I'll need a nap afterwards" but once I went from point to point next thing I know I was done.

Agree with everything you said... quick comments:
1) Game reminded me of the 2005 OSU game. In fact I believe THAT GAME (05 game) is still the biggest games played in the last 20 years only because of the implications of the win at the time. Both team were undefeated going into that game. But again... it reminded me so much of that game. Everything was almost the same down to the weather.
2) I agree with your comment about Herbie and Fowler. Both announcers have massive amount of respect for PSU so when they said it... it was just their honest opinion.
3) Personally this give me new hope about Franklin. I'm not a fan. Not going to hide that fact. But after this game I realized I'm going to have to reevaluate my opinion of him because he had those boys ready to play!

The only thing I would have added was that our hockey team went undefeated this weekend against a number 3 ND. Tying them Friday and beating them Saturday.

Ohio State wasn't undefeated. They lost to Texas a few weeks prior to the game at Beaver Stadium. Texas, of course, went on to win the national championship that year and OSU did not drop another game after losing to us.

Student section at the top stands was open after that halftime rain storm. But so were the blue chair backs in the South endzone. It looked like there was a large group standing underneath the south end zone stands for most of the 2nd half. It was a nasty day and night weather wise.

Yeah, that OSU TE dropped a sure TD pass in the end zone that would have won the game for the Buckeyes against the Long Horns. Poor kid got death threats from OSU fans!

The Buckeyes had a talented roster in 2005.

The Hali strip sack of Troy Smith to ice the game in that 2005 Ohio State game was the loudest I've heard any stadium, ever. I wasn't at the game this week to hear the reaction to the blocked FG, but the Hali sack in 2005 would be hard to top.

Agree that was the loudest I have ever heard that stadium. Hali doinked Smith on his head and the stadium erupted and was shaking at its foundation.

Sack of Smith and fumble in the '05 game.

... Were you at the game Saturday night? I was at both, and I'm telling you... As Haley made his way down the sideline the roar got increasingly louder when you didn't think it was possible to get any louder.

When he juked the defender to dive into the endzone, it was so loud it wasn't even loud anymore. The definition of DEAFENING.

The shame of it is that just like the Michigan loss to Colorado that was sort of a fluke, OSU had Texas beat in that game. They were up by less than 3 points and driving in the 4th quarter, Troy Smith hit the tight end on a seam route and he was wide open and the guy just literally dropped a perfect pass. So they get a FG instead of a TD where the TD puts them up by 8+ points and essentially the game is over. Texas gets the ball back and drives down the field for a TD and wins.

Gotta agree....while the 2005 Hali sack/strip had the fans screaming at a fevered pitch, that was immediate. The blocked FG attempt and the ensuing run by Haley, was a growing crescendo to pandemonium. Go back and listen to the tape. The stadium goes nuts and the crowd gets louder and louder as Haley sprints down the field for the go ahead TD.

The energy is so intense, that Fowler's voice cracks as he screams "HE WILL SCORE!" .... Everyone in our section was in shock... It was like a bomb went off!

... Also, watch the replay... When we kick the extra point it is complete silence... Everyone had been screaming so loud, that when they finally caught their breath nobody could talk.

I was at that game. Great atmosphere....

I've been at both too. This is why I go to the games. Simply the best.
